The must-see places to visit in Vrindavan

Start with the core. If you have one day, these five are the trip, and everything after is a bonus.

1. Banke Bihari Temple

The most visited and most loved temple in Vrindavan, and the one to build your morning around. The deity of Bihariji is shown through a curtain that opens and closes, because the gaze is held to be too intense to meet for long. It is intimate, crowded and deeply alive.

2. Prem Mandir

Vrindavan’s white marble landmark, best seen in the evening when the illumination and the musical fountain begin after dark. Built by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj and opened in 2012, it is the one temple even non temple people enjoy.

3. ISKCON Krishna Balaram Mandir

The Krishna Balaram Mandir in Raman Reti, famous for its kirtan, its cleanliness and its international community. The pre dawn Mangala Aarti here is a genuine experience, and the evening kirtan runs deep into the night.

4. Nidhivan

A small sacred grove of strange, twisting tulsi trees, with the Rang Mahal and the samadhi of Swami Haridas inside. Everyone leaves before sunset, because Brajwasis believe Radha and Krishna come here at night. Visit in the morning, when it is quiet.

5. Kesi Ghat and the Yamuna

The main ghat of Vrindavan, where the evening Yamuna aarti draws a crowd every night. It is the natural close to a Vrindavan day, and the boat ride here at sunrise or sunset is one of the calmest things you can do in Braj.

The seven Goswami temples

Beyond the famous core, Vrindavan’s oldest and most historically important temples are the seven founded by the Goswamis, the direct followers of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. They are quieter, older and richer in tradition than the big modern temples, and they reward anyone who has a second day.

6. Radha Raman Temple

Established in 1542 by Gopala Bhatta Goswami, housing a deity held to be self manifested from a shaligram shila. One of the most sacred and atmospheric of the ancient temples. See the ancient temples of Vrindavan.

7. Radha Damodar Temple

Associated with the Goswamis and home to a Giriraj shila said to carry Krishna’s footprints. Devotees hold that four parikramas of this temple equal one of Govardhan Hill. Quiet, historic and moving. See the complete details of Shri Radha Damodar Temple, Vrindavan.

8. Radha Vallabh Temple

9. Madan Mohan Temple

One of the oldest temples in Vrindavan, a red sandstone structure on a rise above the Yamuna with a beautiful view. The original deity has moved, but the heritage and the setting remain. See the complete details of Madan Mohan Temple, Vrindavan.

10. Govind Dev Temple, Gokulananda and Radha Shyamsundar

11. Rangji Mandir (Sri Ranganatha Temple)

The great surprise of Vrindavan, a vast South Indian style temple with a towering gopuram and a large temple tank, dedicated to Lord Ranganatha. 12. Shahji Temple

Built in 1876 and known for its spiralling marble pillars and ornate architecture, dedicated to Chhote Radha Raman. A quieter, architecturally striking stop.

13. Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple

A rare thing in this Vaishnav town, an ancient Shiva temple, where Mahadev is worshipped in the form of a gopi. The story is that Shiva took a gopi’s form to witness the raas. A beautiful bridge between the Shaivite and Vaishnavite traditions.

14. Katyayani Peeth (Uma Shakti Peeth)

One of the 51 Shakti Peethas, which makes Vrindavan a Devi pilgrimage as well as a Krishna one. Worth knowing about even if the temples of Radha and Krishna are your main reason to come.

15. Pagal Baba Temple

A tall, modern, multi storey temple known for its mechanical dioramas of scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The one on this list children genuinely enjoy, which makes it a useful family stop.

The one thing that ruins Vrindavan trips: the midday closure

Almost every major temple in Vrindavan closes for a few hours in the middle of the day, and nothing you do will get you in during that window. This is the single most important line on this page.

Banke Bihari, Krishna Janmabhoomi in nearby Mathura, Prem Mandir, the Goswami temples, all of them shut around midday and reopen in the late afternoon. Visitors who do not know this lose half a day standing at closed gates.

Things to do beyond the temples

Vrindavan is not only darshan. A few experiences are worth building in.

The Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat every evening, lamps and chanting on the riverbank. A boat ride on the Yamuna at sunrise or sunset, calm and beautiful, for a small fare agreed in advance. The evening kirtan at ISKCON, which draws people from around the world. And simply walking Loi Bazar and the old lanes, where the real texture of Vrindavan lives.

Keep your phone and glasses secure at the ghat, since the monkeys here are quick and bold.

When is the best time to visit Vrindavan?

October to March, and early in the morning. The weather is pleasant, the light is good, and the crowds are thinner at dawn.

The midday closure is real and strict, and it is the thing that catches people out more than anything else. Plan your day around it and half the usual disappointment disappears.

The old lanes are narrow and vehicles do not reach the main temples, so you will walk, and good footwear matters more than you expect. And the monkeys are a genuine nuisance around the temples and the ghat, so keep glasses, phones and prasad held close.
