Key boarding ghats in Vrindavan
While Mathura has a long, continuous stretch of ghats, Vrindavan’s boating centres on a few spiritual points on the Yamuna. See our braj yamuna ghats and leela sites guide for the wider riverfront. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Packages or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
Keshi Ghat
The premier and most iconic boarding point in Vrindavan, a 500-year-old open riverfront with beautiful 17th-century Rajasthani sandstone architecture. It is celebrated as the place where Lord Krishna rested after defeating the demon Keshi and it is the heart of the evening Yamuna Maha-Aarti. This is where most visitors board.
Cheer Ghat
Close to Keshi Ghat along the same bank, Cheer Ghat is a quieter option for a peaceful boat ride or for performing Deepdaan (floating lamp) rituals away from the biggest crowds. A lovely choice if you want calm over spectacle.
Jugal Ghat and Bhramar Ghat area
Smaller local points nearby where hand-rowed wooden boats can occasionally be flagged down. They are less organised than Keshi Ghat but can work if you are already in the area and want a quick, informal ride. Confirm the price and the boat’s condition before you set off.
Estimated boating rates
Boating costs are flexible and depend on your negotiation, group size and whether you want a shared or private ride. These are indicative ranges, confirm the total before you board.
Ride type | Estimated cost (approx.) | Duration and experience |
Shared boat | ₹50 to ₹100 per person | A standard 15 to 20 minute loop; prices can dip (around ₹60) when it is busy with sharers |
Private rowboat | ₹300 to ₹500 total | A private 30 to 40 minute charter; best for families, couples or photography |
Special aarti boat | ₹800 to ₹1,200 total | The boatman rows out and anchors in front of Keshi Ghat for the whole evening aarti |
Note: always firmly confirm the total final price with your boatman before stepping onto the boat, to avoid an aggressive pricing dispute later. Fares rise on festival dates and with demand.
Best time to go
Choose both the right season and the right hour. Confirm the current aarti timing locally, as it shifts with sunset.
The golden and aarti hour (about 5:30 to 7:30 PM)
The most magical window. The sun sets gorgeously behind the ancient madan mohan temple, lighting up the sky and immediately after, the spectacular Yamuna Maha-Aarti begins at Keshi Ghat (usually between about 6:00 and 7:00 PM). Watching the massive brass lamps, hearing the temple bells and seeing hundreds of floating diyas reflect off the dark water from a boat is unforgettable.
Early morning sunrise (about 6:00 to 8:30 AM)
Perfect if you prefer pure tranquillity, mystical misty photography and avoiding the big evening crowds. The river is calm and the light is soft, a completely different, meditative mood from the aarti-hour spectacle.
The best season
The winter months, roughly October to March, are the best time of year, with wonderfully pleasant weather. November is the peak, thanks to the sacred season of Kartik, Deepawali and Bhai Dooj, so expect beauty and crowds together; see our best time to visit vrindavan guide.
Tips for a good boat ride
A few things that make the ride smoother, safer and more meaningful.
Fix the price first. Agree the total amount (not per head unless that is the deal) before you board and be firm; boatmen often quote high to tourists. Knowing the ranges above helps you negotiate.
Go for the aarti, float a diya. Time your ride for the evening Maha-Aarti at Keshi Ghat and offer a Deepdaan (floating lamp) of your own; it is the heart of the experience.
Mind safety and comfort. Check the boat is sound and not overloaded, hold children close, keep phones and valuables secured over the water and ask for a life jacket if available.
Dress modestly and carry small change. As at the temples, dress respectfully; small notes make paying the boatman and buying diyas easier.
Pick your mood. Evening for the spectacle and aarti, early morning for calm and photography. Cheer Ghat is quieter than Keshi Ghat if you want peace.
Let us arrange a safe, fair boat ride for you
An evening on the Yamuna should be pure joy, not a haggle. As a Brajwasi, I can arrange a safe, fair-priced boat at the right time, a private rowboat for a family or an aarti boat anchored in front of Keshi Ghat, time it perfectly for the sunset and the Maha-Aarti and fold it into your wider Vrindavan darshan (Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir, Nidhivan and the ghats). No pricing disputes, no missed timing, just the river at its most beautiful. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person or we design a private vrindavan tour package with the boat ride included. Message us on WhatsApp at +91-7302265809.
