The complete guide
The Mahasamadhi Mandir and the ashram
The Vrindavan ashram is revered as the Mahasamadhi Sthal of Neem Karoli Baba, lovingly called Maharaj-ji. Maharaj-ji left his physical body in Vrindavan in September 1973 (his mahasamadhi is observed on 11 September) and the Mahasamadhi Mandir marks that sacred spot within the ashram; the first temple here was inaugurated in 1967. For countless devotees, in India and around the world, this quiet complex, the Neeb Karori Baba ashram and Neem Karoli Baba Mandir in Vrindavan, is a place of profound stillness and grace.
The universal architecture
The Mahasamadhi Mandir has a strikingly unique design that blends architectural elements of a temple, a mosque, a church, a Gurudwara and a pagoda, expressing the idea that Baba belongs to all and that the divine is one across all paths. It is one of the ashram's most distinctive features.
Shrines in the complex
Set in a calm, well-kept green complex, the ashram houses, besides the central Samadhi Sthal:
Hanumanji Temple. Maharaj-ji was a great devotee of Hanuman and Hanuman temples are central to his ashrams.
Ram Darbar / Sita-Ram Temple (Sita, Ram and Lakshman).
Maa Durga Temple and a Shiv Temple.
A Yagyashala for sacred fire rituals.
Smriti Sangrahalaya. A quiet museum room exhibiting rare historic photographs and personal items of Baba (where available; confirm on the day).
Timings
The ashram is open daily, in two shifts, with a midday break:
Shift | Hours (approximate; confirm) |
Morning darshan | Roughly 6:00 AM to 12:00 noon |
Evening darshan | Roughly 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM |
These hours are typical only and shift with the season and around events like the September Bhandara, so confirm the current timings before you travel. For the most tranquil, quiet hours, arrive early in the morning (around 7:00 AM) or near sunset; these are the best times for silent meditation and sadhana and the ashram is calmest then.
Location
Address: Baba Neem Karori Marg, Atalla Chungi Road, Gaushala Nagar, Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh - 281121.
The ashram sits right along the Parikrama Marg, a short distance from Mathura Road and within the local sightseeing grid, reasonably close to iconic sites like Nidhivan and the banke bihari temple, so it combines easily with them. Addresses can be confusing in Vrindavan's lanes, so use a current map and head for the Atalla Chungi area on the Parikrama Marg.
How to reach
By train. The nearest major railhead is Mathura Junction (MTJ), about 12-14 km away. From Mathura station, hire an auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw or taxi to Atalla Chungi in Vrindavan.
By air. Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is the nearest international airport, roughly 150-180 km away, about 3 to 4 hours by road via the Yamuna Expressway. Agra Airport is closer (around 65-70 km) but has limited flights; most visitors come via Delhi.
By road. Vrindavan is well connected via the Yamuna Expressway (from Delhi / Noida) and NH-19 (the old NH-2). For the final narrow stretch of the Parikrama Marg to the ashram gate, an e-rickshaw is usually the most efficient; cars may need to stop a short walk from the entrance. See our how to commute in vrindavan guide for getting around.
Visiting with respect
This is a quiet, meditative ashram and a living place of worship; a little care keeps it that way for everyone:
Keep silence. Quiet and stillness are the heart of this ashram; please keep silence within the complex, speak softly if you must and let others meditate undisturbed.
Dress modestly and remove footwear where required, as at any temple.
Be considerate with photography and follow the ashram's guidance; many come to sit inwardly, not to be photographed.
Mind your belongings and the monkeys, as across Vrindavan; keep footwear, phones and glasses secure.
Plan around the September Bhandara. The Mahasamadhi Bhandara in September, Baba's mahasamadhi observance, draws very large crowds; it is a powerful time to come, but not a quiet one, so choose your date by what you are seeking.
For devotees visiting from abroad
Maharaj-ji drew a vast following in India and across the world and many international devotees make the pilgrimage to his Vrindavan ashram, which is his mahasamadhi site (distinct from Kainchi Dham in the Uttarakhand hills). The ashram is open for darshan to all; staying inside the ashram, however, is generally possible only with prior arrangement and a letter of introduction, so write to the ashram in advance if you hope to stay. Otherwise, there are good guest houses and hotels nearby, see our hotels near banke bihari temple guide. Plan a calm visit
The ashram is on the Parikrama Marg near Nidhivan and Banke Bihari, so it fits naturally into a calm half-day of Vrindavan, best timed for a quiet early morning or sunset. We can include it in a peaceful, well-paced Vrindavan visit, help you avoid the crowd peaks and arrange comfortable transport with a Braj-born guide, from around ₹1,499 per person for a shared day tour. See our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary to plan, check busy days on our is vrindavan crowded today guide and message us on WhatsApp at +91-7302265809. Darshan at the ashram is free.
