The 28 names of Radha Rani: an overview
In the land of Braj, no name is sweeter than Radha and the tradition has gathered twenty-eight of her names into a single garland of praise, each one opening a window onto her glory. To recite them is to worship Radha Rani by her own divine names, from the one who bestows all bliss to the one who destroys the very disease of rebirth. This guide gives the full list, with the Sanskrit, the Devanagari and the meaning of each name, along with their significance and how to recite them. If you wish to take her darshan at Barsana, her own village, we can arrange it as part of a mathura vrindavan tour with a local guide.
This guide covers the significance of the 28 names; the full list with meaning; the themes that run through them; where Radha Rani is worshipped in Braj; and how and when to recite the names. Our radha rani temple barsana page tells the story of her hilltop shrine.
From the ground (Gurudutt): In Barsana you hear the name of Radha in every lane, sung, whispered, called out in greeting, for here she is not a distant goddess but the daughter of the village, Vrishabhanu Dulari, the darling of Barsana. When I take guests up the hill to the Shriji temple, I often share a few of these twenty-eight names, because each one is a little door into who she is: Raseshwari, the queen of the Raas; Kripa, the merciful; Vrishabhanu Suta, our own daughter of Barsana. You do not need Sanskrit or a priest to recite them; say them slowly, with love and let the meanings sink in. On Radhashtami the whole town sings her names and there is nothing like it.
The significance of the 28 names
By the tradition, a divine name is not a mere label but a living form of the one it names, so that to speak the names of Radha Rani is to bring her presence near. The twenty-eight names together paint her whole glory: her sweetness and beauty, her supremacy as the Adi Shakti and Moolaprakriti, her intimacy as the beloved of Krishna and the queen of the Raas, her earthly life as the daughter of Vrishabhanu and her grace as the giver of both happiness and liberation.
So the names are at once a description, a meditation and a prayer. So reciting them is a complete little worship in itself. We present them as the cherished belief and tradition holds them, held with faith and recounted with reverence, the divine and transcendent glory of Radha Rani.

The themes behind the names
Her sweetness and beauty: Ramya, Radhika and Poornachandravimanna praise her surpassing charm, her face said to shame the full moon.
Her supremacy: Sarvadya, Moolaprakriti, Ishwari, Parameshwari and Paratparatara name her as the primal energy and the highest goddess, above all.
Her love for Krishna: Raseshwari, Shri Krishnavallabha, Krishnamatradhidevata and Gopi name her as the heart of Krishna's pastimes and the queen of the Raas.
Her life in Braj: Vrishabhanu Suta, Vrindavanviharini and Gopi root her in Barsana and Vrindavan, the daughter of the village and the delight of Braj.
Her grace: Bhuktimuktiprada and Bhavavyadhivinashini name her as the giver of happiness and liberation and the healer of the suffering of rebirth. We present these themes with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith.
Where to worship Radha Rani: Barsana and Braj
The chief seat of Radha Rani's worship is barsana radha rani town, her own village, crowned by the hilltop Radha Rani temple, the Shriji temple. Around it lie the sites of her pastimes: prem sarovar barsana, the lake of divine love and the barsana parikrama around the sacred hills. In Vrindavan, mansarovar vrindavan, Radha's Maan Sarovar, recalls her divine sulking and she is worshipped with Krishna in every temple of the town, from prem mandir vrindavan to the banke bihari temple, whose very form unites Radha and Krishna and the sacred grove of nidhivan vrindavan.
So Barsana is the heart of her worship, with all Braj beside it. So her names are especially sweet when recited in these places. We present these sacred sites with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
How and when to recite the names
You may recite the twenty-eight names at any time, in your morning or evening worship or simply as a loving remembrance through the day; say them slowly, dwelling on the meaning of each and let the transliteration guide you if you cannot read the Devanagari. No special initiation or ritual is needed; devotion and a clean heart are enough. They are especially dear on Radhashtami, the appearance day of Radha Rani and during the Kartik month and at Barsana.
So recite them with love, whenever the heart turns to Radha and above all on Radhashtami. So keep the transliteration beside the Devanagari as you learn them. Our vrindavan mathura itinerary helps you plan a visit to Braj to recite them in her own land and our same-day govardhan barsana tour takes in Barsana; our one-day vrindavan mathura tour (from around ₹1,499 per person, darshan free) and two-day mathura vrindavan tour cover the wider Braj.
