Prem Sarovar Barsana is a serene sacred lake, its name meaning the lake of love, that lies between Barsana and Nandgaon, near the village of Gajipur, about 2 km from Barsana. It is revered by the cherished tradition of Braj as the place where the divine and transcendent love of Radha and Krishna was revealed, and where the lake itself was formed from their tears of love, shed in the exalted mood of separation known as prema-vaichittya. On its banks stand the Prem Vihari temple and the Radha Govinda temple, and its calm waters make it one of the most beloved places in Braj for meditation, japa and prayer. Entry is free; the lake is open through the day, and sunset here is especially beautiful.

Prem Sarovar Barsana: an overview

Of all the sacred waters of Braj, few touch the heart like Prem Sarovar, the lake of love. It lies in the gentle country between Barsana, the village revered as the birthplace of Radha and Nandgaon, the village of Nanda Baba, near the hamlet of Gajipur and close to Sanket, only about 2 km from Barsana. The name says everything: prem is love and sarovar is lake and by the cherished tradition of Braj this is the lake said to have formed from the very tears of the divine love of Radha and Krishna. It is a quiet, unhurried place, a still sheet of water ringed by steps and trees, with two temples on its banks, treasured above all as a place to sit in prayer. For the road out to this corner of Braj, see our vrindavan to barsana distance guide.

Why visit Prem Sarovar:

  • One of the most tender and peaceful places in all of Braj, away from the crowds

  • Revered as born of the tears of Radha and Krishna's divine love

  • A place for meditation, japa, bhajan and quiet, heartfelt prayer

  • Still water and golden light, loveliest in the late afternoon and at sunset

  • Easily seen together with Barsana and Nandgaon on one western Braj day

From the ground (Gurudutt): Prem Sarovar is one of the places I most love to bring devotees who want a quiet, tender hour rather than a crowded temple. Most day-trippers rush past it between Barsana and Nandgaon and never stop and that is the honest mistake; this is a place to sit by the water, not to tick off. I bring my guests here in the late afternoon, when the light turns golden and the lake goes still and I tell them the story of the tears of love as we sit on the steps. Come with a calm heart, keep your voice low, take darshan at the little temples on the bank and give it half an hour of stillness. We hold all of this as the tender tradition of Braj, with reverence. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The story of Prem Sarovar

By the cherished tradition of Braj, celebrated in the Bhakti Ratnakara, Prem Sarovar is revered as the lake formed from the tears of love shed by Radha and Krishna in the exalted mood of separation. The pastime, told in brief and with reverence, unfolds like this:

  • Lalita brings Radharani to this spot, then shaded by kadamba trees and Krishna arrives with his friend Madhumangala.

  • The divine couple sit together, absorbed in one another's company.

  • A honey-bee, a madhu-makkhi, troubles Radha and Krishna bids Madhumangala drive it away.

  • Madhumangala, having chased it off, calls out that Madhu has gone; Radha, in the depth of her love, hears it as though Madhusudana, Krishna himself, had departed.

  • She is overcome by prema-vaichittya, the rare mood of feeling separation from the beloved even while in his very presence; though she rests in Krishna's lap, she cannot sense him and he too is lost in the same longing.

  • Calling each other's names, the two shed torrents of tears of love and from these tears the lake, Prem Sarovar, is formed.

  • The parrots in the trees sing their holy names until the divine couple return to themselves and lovingly embrace.

This is the transcendent and divine love-play of Radha and Krishna, never a worldly matter and it is said that one who bathes here with faith is blessed with love for them. We present this as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence.

In one line: Prem Sarovar is the still, sacred lake of love near Barsana, revered as born of Radha and Krishna's tears and treasured as a place of stillness and prayer.

The spiritual significance of Prem Sarovar

For pilgrims, Prem Sarovar is far more than a scenic lake; its significance in the tradition of Braj can be gathered in a few points:

  • The embodiment of divine love. The lake is revered as prem itself made visible, born of the tears of Radha and Krishna, so its very water is held to carry the mood of their love.

  • The place of prema-vaichittya. It is revered as where Radha displayed prema-vaichittya, the highest reach of loving devotion, feeling separation even in union, a mood cherished by the saints of Braj.

  • A blessing for the heart. By tradition, one who bathes or sits here in prayer with faith is blessed with love for Radha and Krishna, so devotees come to soften and open the heart.

  • A seat of meditation. Its stillness makes it one of the most beloved places in Braj for meditation, japa and bhajan, away from the noise of the temple towns.

We present these as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence.

What to see at Prem Sarovar

Prem Sarovar is a place of quiet rather than of grand sights and its beauty is in its stillness; these are the things to see and do:

  • The lake and its steps. The calm sheet of water, ringed by bathing steps and trees, is the heart of the place; devotees sit on the banks in prayer and some, with faith, take the sacred bath said to bless the heart with love for Radha and Krishna.

  • The Prem Vihari temple. On the bank stands the Prem Vihari temple, where darshan is taken of the divine couple; it is a gentle, unhurried shrine in keeping with the mood of the lake.

  • The Radha Govinda temple. Also by the water is the Radha Govinda temple, another place of darshan of Radha and Krishna, dear to the pilgrims who come to Prem Sarovar.

  • The kadamba trees and gardens. The tradition remembers this spot as a grove of kadamba trees and the greenery and quiet around the water still give it a soft, secluded feeling.

  • The stillness itself. Above all, Prem Sarovar is a place to sit, to meditate, to tell beads and softly sing; the peace of the water, especially in the golden light of late afternoon, is the true darshan here.

So Prem Sarovar rewards a slow, prayerful visit. We present it as the cherished tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence.

  • Come in the late afternoon into sunset for the calmest water and the loveliest light.

  • Keep your voice low and respect those sitting in meditation and prayer.

  • Remove footwear near the shrines and dress modestly for the temples.

  • Carry a little water and some cash for any free-will offering; there is no entry ticket.

  • Agree auto or e-rickshaw fares before you set off from Barsana.

  • Take a guide for the story of the lake, which is what brings the place alive.

  • Give it at least half an hour of stillness, more if you wish to meditate or tell beads.

How to plan your visit

The smoothest plan is to include Prem Sarovar in a western Braj day: give the morning to Barsana and the Radha Rani temple, pause at Prem Sarovar and Sanket in the afternoon and go on to Nandgaon, all within a short compass. Our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary helps you shape the days around the temple hours.

We arrange guided tours of Barsana, Prem Sarovar and the western Braj towns, with pick-up from Mathura or Vrindavan, a comfortable vehicle and a knowledgeable Braj-born guide to tell the story of the lake on its very banks. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free at the temples; our govardhan barsana tour covers the western cluster in a day, while the braj 84 kos yatra takes in Barsana, Nandgaon, Prem Sarovar and the whole circuit over several days. "We booked the Same Day Govardhan Barsana Tour with Experience My India and were happy with how naturally the two places fitted together. We started at Daan Ghati and Mansi Ganga in Govardhan and then continued towards Barsana for Radha Rani Temple. The morning was peaceful, and we had enough time for darshan before the bigger crowds arrived. Our driver also reminded us that Giriraj Govardhan is revered as sacred, so devotees walk around the hill rather than stepping on it. That small guidance was helpful because we were not familiar with the local customs."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Govardhan Barsana Tour Package gave us enough time to explore Govardhan without trying to complete the full parikrama. We visited Radha Kund, Kusum Sarovar and Mansi Ganga, and later continued towards Barsana. Kusum Sarovar was easily our favourite because the sandstone ghats looked beautiful in the late afternoon light. We also appreciated the slower pace. Instead of simply stopping for photographs, our guide explained the traditional stories connected with the different places. The route between Govardhan and Barsana was short, so we could comfortably include both on the same day."

"We chose the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package because we wanted to include Govardhan and Barsana along with the main Mathura and Vrindavan temples. On the third day, we started early around Govardhan and visited Daan Ghati, Mukharvind, Mansi Ganga and Radha Kund before heading towards Barsana. We did not attempt the complete 21 km parikrama because my parents were travelling with us, and the guide suggested a shorter, comfortable plan instead. In Barsana, we visited Radha Rani Temple and Kirti Mandir. The day felt like a proper western Braj pilgrimage rather than just another sightseeing trip."
