Why Kirti Mandir matters in my Braj
We sing Radha's name across all of Braj - but how often do we honour the mother who raised her? That is what makes Kirti Mandir so moving. In all the world, this is the only temple dedicated to Kirti Maiya, Radha's mother - and the only one that shows Radha not as the divine consort but as a little girl in her mother's lap. Barsana is Radha's town, where, in the tradition, Kirti and Vrishabhanu raised the infant found upon a lotus. I bring pilgrims here for that tenderness - and because, unlike the steep climb to the hilltop Shriji temple, Kirti Mandir sits on the main road, open to everyone. Radhe Radhe.
Kirti Maiya - the mother of Radha
In the tradition, Barsana was ruled by Vrishabhanu and his queen Kirti - Radha's parents. And the tradition holds something tender about Radha's coming: she was found, not womb-born - discovered as an infant upon a lotus - and raised in this town as the beloved daughter of Kirti and Vrishabhanu.
So Kirti Maiya is the mother of the Beloved - the woman who cradled, named and raised Radha Rani. To honour Kirti is to honour the maternal love that nurtured the very embodiment of divine love. It is a beautiful, often-overlooked devotion and Kirti Mandir gives it, at last, a home.
The world's only temple to Radha's mother
Kirti Mandir is widely described as the only temple in the world dedicated to Radha's mother, Kirti - and its central deity is unique: Radha as a small child, about five years old, seated on the lap of her mother, Kirti Maiya. Nowhere else is Radha worshipped in this childhood form.
It is a profound shift of view. Across Braj we adore Radha as Krishna's eternal beloved; here, for once, we see her as a daughter - small, cherished, held. The temple is a celebration of that maternal tenderness and many pilgrims find it the most quietly moving darshan in all of Barsana.
The temple Kripalu Maharaj built
Kirti Mandir was envisioned by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj - the same saint who built Vrindavan's Prem Mandir - and is managed by his trust, the Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat. The foundation was laid in 2006 and after years of work the temple was inaugurated in 2019, on the auspicious day of Vasant Panchami.
It is a marble masterpiece, carved from Italian marble in a blend of Nagara and Dravidian styles, crowned with golden kalash and - like Prem Mandir - adorned with beautiful dioramas of scenes from Radha's life. If you have seen Prem Mandir, you will recognise the same loving craftsmanship here, with a magical illumination after dark. Confirm the current night-show and aarti schedule on the day, as these can change.
Kirti Mandir & the hilltop Radha Rani temple
Barsana has two great Radha temples and the wise pilgrim sees both, for they show two faces of the same love:
The Shriji / Ladli Ji (Radha Rani) Temple - the ancient, crowning temple on the hilltop, where Radha is the primary deity, reached by a steep climb (palkis available). The heart of Radhashtami.
Kirti Mandir - the modern marble temple at ground level on the main road, dedicated to Radha's mother, with no climb at all.
If the Shriji temple is an ode to Radha as the goddess of devotional love, Kirti Mandir is a celebration of the maternal love that raised her. See both to feel the whole of Barsana - and if a climb is hard for you, Kirti Mandir is the accessible, ground-level darshan.
Darshan timings, entry & photography
Kirti Mandir is open for morning and evening darshan, with a celebrated maha-aarti and a beautiful evening illumination. The exact windows shift between the summer and winter schedules and can be extended on festivals, so I never quote a fixed clock.
Entry is free. Photography is restricted in parts of the temple - always ask and respect the rule. Peda prasad is available inside the premises. Keep valuables secure.
Festivals - Radhashtami, Vasant Panchami & more
Festival | What's special | When |
Radhashtami | Radha's appearance - Barsana's supreme day, kept with great splendour | Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami |
Vasant Panchami | The temple's own inauguration day - and the first gulal of Braj's Holi season | Magha Shukla Panchami |
Lathmar Holi | Barsana's famous stick-Holi | Days before main Holi |
Janmashtami | Krishna's birth | Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami |
Radhashtami is supreme - the birth of Radha, in her own town. And Vasant Panchami carries a double meaning here: it is both the day the temple opened and, across Braj, the day the first gulal of the long Holi season is offered. Festival dates are tithi-based and move yearly.
How to reach Kirti Mandir
Kirti Mandir stands on the main road in Barsana (near Rangeeli Mahal), in western Braj - easy to reach and, unlike the hilltop temple, requiring no climb.
From Mathura: 45-50 km, by cab or taxi, via Govardhan or Kosi.
From Vrindavan: 45-47 km (about an hour).
From Nandgaon: 8-10 km - pair the two paired towns.
From Delhi: Yamuna Expressway to Mathura, then west to Barsana.
For routing, see the Vrindavan commute guide.
Experience My India is the most trusted and professional travel partner to book your Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package - a Govardhan & Barsana tour takes in Kirti Mandir, the hilltop Shriji temple and Nandgaon on the western circuit.
Best time to visit + crowd, safety & accessibility
Cool-season mornings (October to March) are most comfortable and evening is lovely for the temple's illumination. On ordinary days it is calm; it is very crowded on weekends, Radhashtami and during the Holi season.
Kirti Mandir's great practical virtue is its accessibility - at ground level on the main road, with no hill-climb, it suits the elderly, families and those who cannot manage the steep ascent to the hilltop Shriji temple. Parking is available opposite. As across Braj, keep valuables secure, mind the monkeys outside and give any generosity to the temple or a genuine gaushala rather than to donation-pressure touts. Note that washroom facilities around the temple are limited.
Places to combine nearby
Kirti Mandir sits in the Barsana-Nandgaon belt of western Braj - a rich circuit:
Shriji / Radha Rani Temple, Barsana - the ancient hilltop temple, the heart of Radhashtami
Shri Nand Mahal, Nandgaon - Krishna's boyhood town, 8-10 km away
Radha Rani Temple, Rawal - the other tradition of Radha's birthplace
Govardhan Hill & Kokilavan - on the wider western route
In Barsana: Maan Mandir, Vrishabhanu Kund, Sankari Khor, Gahvar Van, Pili Pokhar

Food & prasad nearby
Peda prasad is available inside the temple premises - convenient and blessed. Barsana and the western-Braj route also offer simple local food - kachori-jalebi, peda, lassi. Favour busy, freshly-cooking stalls, carry water and drink sealed bottled water, as facilities here are simpler than in Mathura-Vrindavan.
Author's tips from Gurudutt - what only a local knows
This is the one temple to Radha's mother - see Radha as a cherished child in Kirti's lap; it is unlike any other darshan in Braj.
No climb here - unlike the hilltop Shriji temple, Kirti Mandir is at ground level on the main road; ideal for elders and families.
See both Barsana temples - the hilltop Shriji (Radha the goddess) and Kirti Mandir (the mother's love); together they complete Barsana.
Evenings are beautiful - the marble and the illumination, in the manner of Prem Mandir by the same builder.
Radhashtami is supreme - Radha's birthday, in her own town; expect splendour and crowds.
We say Her name a million times a day - Radhe, Radhe - but here we bow to the mother who first whispered it over a cradle. To see Radha small, held in Kirti's arms, is to remember that even the Beloved of Braj was once someone's little girl. - Gurudutt
