Vrindavan to Barsana Distance: Route, Time, Fare and Darshan Timing

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·8 August 2026

Vrindavan to Barsana Distance

Quick Answer

Vrindavan to Barsana is about 43 to 45 km by road, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by car on the fastest route. Experience My India plans the drive around Radha Rani Temple’s strict afternoon closure, so you reach the hilltop while darshan is open, not shut.

Key takeaways

  • Distance is about 43 to 45 km, with the fastest route around 42 to 43 km, covered in 1 to 1.5 hours by car.
  • Barsana to Vrindavan is the same distance in reverse, on the same road.
  • Radha Rani Temple (Ladli Ji) sits atop Bhanugarh Hill and closes strictly in the early afternoon, so departure time matters more than distance.
  • Reach the temple by 200-plus steps or the ropeway; a palki is available for elders. Entry is free.
  • A private car is the most reliable way to hit the darshan window; bus and shared auto are cheaper but slower.

What is the Vrindavan to Barsana distance?

The Vrindavan to Barsana distance by road is about 43 to 45 km, and the drive takes 1 to 1.5 hours by car depending on the route and the day. Put another way, the distance from Vrindavan to Barsana is short, with the most direct routes measuring around 42 to 43 km. It is a comfortable single-day trip, and the road runs through the rural heart of Braj, past roadside temples, dairy shops and mustard fields, so many travellers remember the drive itself as much as the destination.

What is the Barsana to Vrindavan distance?

Barsana to Vrindavan is the same 43 to 45 km and about 1 to 1.5 hours by car, because the Barsana Vrindavan road is identical in reverse. If you are staying in Barsana or Nandgaon and returning to Vrindavan for the evening aartis, plan the same travel time and leave before the late-afternoon village traffic builds near Barsana. Vrindavan se Barsana kitni dur hai? Vrindavan se Barsana ki duri lagbhag 43 se 45 km hi hai.

Which route from Vrindavan to Barsana should you take?

There are three practical routes, each with a different distance and character. A local driver reads the day’s traffic and picks between them.

Route

Distance

Time

Best for

Via Chhatikara and NH-19 to Chhata, then Barsana Road

about 43 km

about 1 hr 10 min

Fastest, steady highway stretch

Via Govardhan and Radha Kund

about 45 km

about 1.5 hr

Adding Govardhan and Radha Kund

Via Nandgaon

about 45 km

about 1.5 hr

Pairing Barsana with Nandgaon

Route 1 is usually quickest and keeps you on the highway longer, which helps when the smaller roads are busy. Routes 2 and 3 are worth the extra time only if you want the stops. For the onward leg toward Govardhan, see the Govardhan to Vrindavan distance guide.

How long does the journey take by car, bus, and auto?

Mode

One-way time

Notes

Private car or taxi

1 to 1.5 hours

Most reliable for hitting the darshan window

Bus

2 to 2.5 hours

Cheapest, runs from the Vrindavan bus stand, about 49 km, less predictable

Shared auto or vehicle

2 to 2.5 hours

Budget option, slow over the full distance

Train

no direct option

No station at Barsana; nearest hub is Mathura Junction, then road

A map may show one hour, but the real travel time depends on when you leave and which day it is. Weekends, Ekadashi and festival days add congestion, so a drive that takes 70 minutes on a quiet weekday morning can take well over two hours on a busy afternoon.

When should you leave Vrindavan to catch Radha Rani Temple darshan?

This is the part most guides leave out, and it is the one that decides whether your trip works. Radha Rani Temple, the Ladli Ji Mandir, sits atop Bhanugarh Hill and keeps a morning and an evening darshan window with a firm closure in between. Miss the window and the distance stops mattering, because you reach the top and find the doors shut.

The pattern shifts a little between summer and winter, so confirm the day’s timing before you set off. These are the timings we publish across our site:

Season

Morning darshan

Evening darshan

Summer (April to September)

about 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM

about 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Winter (October to March)

about 5:30 AM to 2:00 PM

about 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM

Plan your departure backward from the window. For a relaxed morning darshan, leave Vrindavan by about 8:30 to 9:00 AM, which puts you at the base of the hill with time to climb before the early-afternoon crowd and closure. For the evening darshan, which many find the most atmospheric with the hilltop breeze and the aarti, leave by about 3:00 PM. What you want to avoid is arriving in the early afternoon as the temple is emptying. Entry is free, so anyone asking for a darshan fee at the top is a tout, not the temple.

For full aarti timings and the temple’s history, see our Radha Rani Temple Barsana darshan guide. The nearby Kirti Mandir Barsana light and sound show pairs well with an evening visit.

Not sure how to time it around your temple list? Send us your plan on WhatsApp and we will build the day around the darshan windows, not the map. Or see the full 4-day Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon tour.

How do you reach Barsana from Vrindavan?

By car or taxi is the most convenient and the most reliable for timing the darshan, about 42 to 43 km in roughly 1 hour 10 minutes on the fastest route. A private car lets you leave on your own schedule and add stops. By bus, government and private buses run from the Vrindavan bus stand toward Barsana, the cheapest option though slower and less predictable. By auto or shared vehicle works on a budget but is slow over the full distance and hard to time around the window. By train there is no station at Barsana; the nearest hub is Mathura Junction, and you continue by road.

What is the taxi fare from Vrindavan to Barsana?

A one-way drop taxi starts from around 1,300 rupees depending on vehicle type. A round trip with waiting time at the temple typically runs about 2,500 to 5,000 rupees depending on the vehicle, the waiting hours, and whether you add Nandgaon or Radha Kund. Agree the fare and the waiting time before you set off, and be firm with anyone at Barsana pushing a paid special darshan, which does not exist for a free temple.

For the exact live rate for your date and group, message us on WhatsApp. Guided day trips and multi-day Braj tour packages include the cab, the timing, and a Braj-born guide.

How far is Barsana from Delhi, Agra, and Mathura?

If you are coming from beyond Braj, these are the rough road distances to Barsana. Each of these origins has its own detailed route, so treat this as a quick reference.

From

Distance to Barsana

By road

Mathura

about 50 to 53 km

about 1.5 hours

Agra

about 105 km

about 2.5 hours

Delhi

about 155 km

about 3.5 hours

What stops can you add on the way?

The route rewards a few pauses. Radha Kund and Shyam Kund, on the Govardhan route, carry deep devotional significance and sit naturally on the way. Nandgaon, the village of Nand Baba and Krishna’s childhood, is about 8 to 10 km from Barsana and pairs perfectly. And the roadside Braj itself, the dairy shops, the small temples, the pilgrims calling Radhe Radhe, is half the reason to drive rather than rush.

If you are building a wider circuit, our how to plan a Vrindavan Mathura trip guide sequences the whole region, and the Vrindavan Parikrama guide covers the walk itself.

When is the best time to make the trip?

October to March is the most comfortable season for the drive and the climb, with pleasant weather and clear hilltop views. July to September is green and atmospheric but humid. The Barsana Lathmar Holi period, in February or March, is extraordinary but brings enormous crowds and heavy traffic on this very road, so plan carefully or avoid it if you want a calm visit. Whatever the season, early morning is the smoothest time to travel and to climb.

A local’s note on this drive

I am Gurudutt, born in Braj, and I drive this route almost every week. The one thing I tell every group is the same: plan the day around the temple, not the odometer. I have watched families do everything right, leave on time, take the fast road, and still stand outside a shut temple at two in the afternoon because nobody told them about the closure. Get the departure right and this is one of the most complete one-day pilgrimages in Braj. Not for you if you want to rush four towns in a morning; Barsana rewards a slower hour on the hill.
