Garud Govind Mandir Vrindavan: an overview
Just before the busy Chhatikara turn where the highway meets Vrindavan, a small, easily missed lane leads into Chhatikara village and to one of the oldest and most quietly powerful temples of Braj: Garud Govind Mandir. Here the Lord is worshipped in a rare form, as Govind, that is Krishna as Narayana, seated upon Garuda, his great eagle mount, with Lakshmi beside him and, at his feet, his queens Rukmini and Satyabhama. Because Garuda is the king of birds and, by the tradition of jyotish, the natural subduer of serpents, this has become the temple in Braj where devotees come to seek relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh and the snake-afflictions of the horoscope. It is an ancient, atmospheric shrine, revered by the Brajwasis as their own family deity. This guide gives the full timings and aarti schedule, the significance and story, the deity and how to reach the temple. For the temple's deeper history and the Kaal Sarpa remedy in detail, see our shri garud govind temple page.
Why devotees come to Garud Govind Mandir:
To behold the rare darshan of Govind seated upon Garuda, an auspicious and uncommon form of Krishna
To seek relief, in faith, from Kaal Sarp Dosh and Sarpa Dosha, for which this is Braj's chief seat
As a stop on the Braj Mandala Parikrama, which the tradition holds incomplete without this darshan
For the calm, ancient atmosphere of Chhatikara, away from the busiest temple crowds
From the ground (Gurudutt): I bring many guests to Garud Govind and my honest advice is to come for calm and faith, not for fear. People hear the words Kaal Sarp Dosh and worry; but this is a place of the Lord's grace, not of dread and even a simple darshan with a settled heart is the real blessing. If you wish to have the Kaal Sarp anushthan done, arrange it properly with the temple priests and beware anyone on the road promising quick fixes for money. The temple keeps long hours, so there is no rush; I like the peace of the morning best. And if you ask the pujari with respect, he may lift the Lord's dress to show the wonderful form of Krishna with many arms upon Garuda. We hold all of this as the tradition of Braj, with reverence. In one line: Garud Govind Mandir is the ancient Chhatikara temple of Krishna seated on Garuda, revered across India as Braj's seat of relief, in faith, from Kaal Sarp Dosh.
The significance: Kaal Sarp Dosh relief
The temple's renown rests on the nature of Garuda; its significance can be gathered in a few points:
Garuda, the subduer of serpents. Garuda is the king of birds and, by tradition, the natural foe and master of serpents; the Lord seated upon him is therefore revered as sovereign over the snake-afflictions of the horoscope.
Braj's seat for Kaal Sarp Dosh. This is the temple in Braj where devotees from across India come to seek relief, in faith, from Kaal Sarp Dosh and Sarpa Dosha, much as Kokilavan near Nandgaon is the seat for Shani.
The Kaal Sarp anushthan. The chief ceremony is the Kaal Sarp anushthan, a ritual performed here with the temple priests; darshan itself is free and any anushthan should be arranged properly, quite apart from touts promising quick remedies.
Faith, not fear. The tradition invites the devotee to come with a calm and trusting heart, for the darshan of the merciful Lord is held to bring harmony and peace; it is a place of grace, not of dread.
We present the remedy for Kaal Sarp Dosh as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj and of jyotish, held with faith and recounted with reverence and not as any guarantee; the kokilavan shani dev temple is the companion seat for the relief of Shani.
The story of Garud Govind
Several beloved traditions are told of how Garuda came to have darshan of Govind at this very spot; they are recounted here with reverence as the tradition of Braj:
While grazing the cows and playing with his cowherd friends, the child Krishna climbed upon the shoulders of a sakha who played the part of Garuda and so appeared as Narayana riding his eagle mount; thus Garuda beheld Govind here.
In the age of Rama, Garuda was bewildered to see Lord Rama bound in the serpent-noose, the Nagpash, by Meghnath; his doubt was cleared by Kaakbhushundi, who sent him to this place where the boy Krishna was playing and here Garuda offered his contrition and Krishna mounted upon him.
It is also told that Krishna granted a boon that here the serpents need not fear Garuda, a blessing of protection that is remembered in the temple's power over snake-doshas.
By another cherished tradition, the Chhati, the sixth-day ceremony, of the infant Krishna was held here, which is why the village is called Chhatikara.
We present these as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
The deity and what to see
The deity of Govind on Garuda. The heart of the temple is the rare, ancient image of Govind, Krishna as Narayana, seated upon Garuda, with Lakshmi at his side; on respectful request the pujari may reveal the wonderful many-armed form of Krishna upon the eagle.
Rukmini and Satyabhama. At the feet of the Lord are his queens Rukmini and Satyabhama, a tender detail cherished by devotees.
Garud Govind Kund. Near the temple lies the Garud Govind Kund, a small sacred water body that is part of the old pilgrimage site.
The calm of Chhatikara. Set a little off the highway in Chhatikara village, the temple keeps an old, unhurried atmosphere, a peaceful place for darshan and prayer.
So the darshan of Govind upon Garuda is the true treasure here. We recount it as the tradition of Braj, with reverence.
