Gokul Tourist Places: Temples, Ghats and Leela Sites of Krishna's Childhood

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·18 August 2026

Gokul Tourist Places

Quick Answer

The chief gokul tourist places are the Chaurasi Khamba, the eighty-four-pillar temple that is revered as the house of Nanda at Mahavan, the Gokulnath temple, the sacred Thakurani Ghat and Brahmand Ghat on the Yamuna, and the soft sands of Raman Reti with its deer sanctuary, all in the town where, by the cherished tradition of Braj, the child Krishna was raised after being carried across the river from his birthplace at Mathura. Gokul lies on the eastern bank of the Yamuna, about 15 km from Mathura, and it is a quieter, gentler place than Vrindavan; darshan at its temples is free. Allow about half a day, or a full day if you add Mahavan and nearby Baldeo.

Gokul tourist places: an overview

Gokul is the tender heart of Krishna's infancy. By the cherished tradition of Braj, the Lord was born in the prison of Mathura and carried across the Yamuna on the very night of his birth to the home of Nanda and Yashoda in Gokul, where he was raised as a cowherd child; so Gokul, not the birthplace, is the town of his boyhood leelas, of the mischief and the wonder. It has two parts: Gokul proper on the eastern bank, with the Gokulnath temple and the Thakurani Ghat and the older settlement of Mahavan or Old Gokul, with the Chaurasi Khamba, the eighty-four-pillar house of Nanda. It is quieter and less commercial than Vrindavan, a place of ghats and gentle lanes. This guide names every one of the gokul tourist places, the chief site, the temples, the ghats, the sacred sand, the nearby sites and the festivals, then the timings, tips and how to reach.

From the ground (Gurudutt): I love bringing guests to Gokul, because it is calm where Vrindavan is busy and the leela stories come alive here. The honest correction I always make is this: Krishna was born in Mathura, not in Gokul; Gokul is where he was raised and some guides and lists muddle the two and even place Vrindavan's Nidhivan or Mathura's Vishram Ghat inside Gokul, which is simply wrong. The true heart is the Chaurasi Khamba at Mahavan and the ghats on the Yamuna. Go by the Agra Road, keep half a day at least, take a boat at the ghat if the river is calm and let a guide tell you the infant leelas as you stand where they are remembered. We hold all of it as the tradition of Braj, with reverence. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Janmashtami and Nanda Utsav

In one line: Gokul is the town of Krishna's infancy, east of Mathura, where the Chaurasi Khamba, the Gokulnath temple, the sacred ghats and the soft sands of Raman Reti gather the leelas of his childhood.

The chief site: Chaurasi Khamba and Nand Bhavan

The single most famous of the gokul tourist places is the great old hall at Mahavan, revered as the very home of Krishna's boyhood.

  • Chaurasi Khamba (84-Pillar Temple). The ancient hall of eighty-four carved stone pillars at Mahavan, revered by the tradition of Braj as the house of Nanda where the infant Krishna was raised; a rare and atmospheric monument, quite unlike the newer temples of Braj.

  • Nand Bhavan. The palace-home of Nanda Baba, set on the Mahavan rise, remembered as the house of Krishna's childhood; by tradition it was raised long ago and it holds the cradle and the images of Nanda, Yashoda and the child Krishna with Balaram.

  • Utkhal, the ukhal-bandhan sthal. The spot revered as where mother Yashoda tied the little Krishna to a wooden mortar to check his butter-stealing mischief, the beloved Damodar leela, the divine and transcendent play of the Lord, never a worldly matter.

So the Chaurasi Khamba and Nand Bhavan are the heart of Gokul, the house of the child. Our 84 khambha temple mahavan guide tells their full story. We present all of this as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence.

The temples of Gokul

Gokul town holds several beloved temples, chief among them the seat of the Pushtimarg.

  • Gokulnath Temple. One of the most sacred temples of Gokul, a great seat of the Pushtimarg of Vallabhacharya, thronged with pilgrims at Janmashtami and the Annakut festival; its worship of the child Krishna is at the heart of Gokul's devotional life.

  • Chintaharan Mahadev. The revered Shiva temple of Gokul, whose name means the remover of worry, where by tradition the guardian Mahadev of Braj watches over the town and its pilgrims.

  • Other shrines. Gokul holds many smaller temples of the child Krishna in his Balgopal and Murlidhar forms, along the lanes and near the ghats, each with its own gentle devotion.

So the gokulnath temple is the devotional heart of Gokul town, with the chinta haran mahadev as its guardian Shiva. We recount these as the cherished tradition of Braj, with reverence.

The sacred ghats of Gokul

Gokul lives along the Yamuna and its ghats are among the most sacred of the gokul tourist places.

  • Thakurani Ghat (Gokul Ghat). The most famous ghat of Gokul, revered as the place where Vallabhacharya received the darshan of the Yamuna and resolved to serve Krishna and his land; it is a founding site of the Pushtimarg and a place of quiet devotion by the river.

  • Brahmand Ghat. The ghat revered as where the infant Krishna, having eaten a little earth in play, opened his mouth and showed the whole universe, the brahmand, within, to the wonder of Yashoda; an old temple overlooks the river here and the sacred dust of Braj is honoured.

  • The river itself. When the Yamuna is calm, a short boat ride from the ghats is a gentle way to feel the old town from the water and an evening arati by the river is a peaceful close to the day.

So Thakurani Ghat is the Pushtimarg's sacred river-seat, remembered with the baithakji of mahaprabhu in braj and Brahmand Ghat holds the wonder of the universe leela, gathered with the other river sites in our braj yamuna ghats and leela sites guide. We hold these as the tradition of Braj, with reverence.

The sacred sand and natural sites

Beyond the temples and ghats, Gokul holds the gentlest of its sites, the sacred sand and the calm river country.

  • Raman Reti. The soft, golden sand where, by tradition, the child Krishna roamed and played; devotees walk barefoot upon it and a much-loved deer sanctuary and the Karshni Ashram with the Raman Bihari Ji shrine sit within its calm compound.

  • Gokul Barrage. The Yamuna barrage near Gokul, a scenic and peaceful spot by the water, pleasant for a quiet pause and for photographs of the river.

So raman reti gokul is the tender, sandy jewel of Gokul, a place to sit rather than rush. We present it as the cherished tradition of Braj, with reverence.

Nearby and outlying sites

A few important sites lie just beyond Gokul, in Mahavan and the country around and should not be confused with the sites of Mathura or Vrindavan.

  • Raskhan Samadhi (Mahavan). The riverside tomb of Raskhan, the Muslim poet who became a great devotee of Krishna, near Mahavan; a rare and moving site that speaks of Braj's wide-hearted devotion.

  • Lohvan. A short way from Gokul, the site revered in the tradition of Braj as where Krishna slew the demon Lohasura, with its temple.

  • Baldeo (Dauji). A little to the east lies the town of Baldeo with its great temple of Balaram, Krishna's elder brother, a major pilgrimage in its own right.

  • Mathura and Vrindavan. Mathura, the birthplace and Vrindavan, the town of the raas leela, lie close by; note that Vrindavan's Nidhivan and Mathura's Vishram Ghat belong to those towns, not to Gokul, though some lists confuse them.

So the dau ji temple baldeo at Baldeo and the birthplace at the shri krishna janmabhoomi temple of Mathura complete the wider circle around Gokul.

Festivals of Gokul

Gokul keeps the great festivals of Krishna's childhood with special joy.

  • Janmashtami and Nanda Utsav. The birth of Krishna is kept with fervour and the very next day Gokul celebrates Nanda Utsav or Gokulashtami, the joy of Nanda's household at the coming of the child, with singing and the showering of turmeric and curds.

  • Annakut. The festival of the mountain of food offered to Krishna, kept grandly at the Gokulnath temple.

  • Holi. The colours of Braj come to Gokul too, in the days around the great Braj Holi, though the most famous Lathmar Holi belongs to Barsana and Nandgaon.

So Janmashtami and Nanda Utsav are the great days to see Gokul at its most joyful. We recount these as the cherished tradition of Braj, held with faith and reverence.

Timings, tips and how to reach

Timings: the temples of Gokul open in the morning and again in the evening, closing through the middle of the day, on the usual rhythm of Braj; confirm the exact hours locally and note that at Raman Reti footwear is removed and photography may be limited. Darshan is free; any optional service is quite separate from any paid-darshan claim. Our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide gives the general hours.

Tips: keep at least half a day, wear comfortable shoes for the lanes and ghats, carry water and a little cash, dress modestly for the temples and take a guide for the leela stories, which is what brings Gokul alive. The cool months of October to March are the best time; Janmashtami is glorious but crowded.

How to reach: Gokul is about 15 km from Mathura by the Agra Road, an easy drive of around half an hour and Mathura Junction, well connected to Delhi and Agra, is the nearest railhead; our distance from mathura to gokul guide covers the route in full and the how to commute in vrindavan guide covers getting around the Braj towns. For a deeper temple-by-temple visit, see our gokul mandir guide.

We arrange guided tours of Gokul and Mahavan, with pick-up from Mathura or Vrindavan, the Agra Road route and a knowledgeable Braj-born guide to tell the childhood leelas as you stand where they are remembered. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free at the temples; our mathura vrindavan tour covers the twin cities and Gokul, while the braj 84 kos yatra takes in Gokul, Mahavan, Baldeo and the whole circuit over several days, shaped by our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary. "We booked the Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package with Experience My India and were a little unsure whether both cities could be covered comfortably in one day. Gurudutt ji planned the route around the temple hours, starting with Mathura and then moving towards Vrindavan. We visited Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish Temple, Banke Bihari Temple and Prem Mandir. The short distance between Mathura and Vrindavan made the transfer easy, and we used the afternoon temple closure for lunch instead of waiting around. The evening at Prem Mandir was a beautiful way to finish the day."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package was exactly right for our family. We gave the first day to Mathura, covering Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish Temple and the Yamuna ghats, and kept the second day for Vrindavan. Banke Bihari, ISKCON and Prem Mandir were the main highlights. Gurudutt ji explained that Mathura and Vrindavan are only about 13 km apart, but trying to see everything in one stretch can still feel tiring because of the temple closures and crowds. Having one full day for each town gave us time to sit at the ghats, eat properly and enjoy darshan without constantly checking the clock."

"We chose the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package because we wanted to see more than just the famous temples. The first two days covered Mathura and Vrindavan comfortably, including Krishna Janmabhoomi, Banke Bihari, ISKCON, Prem Mandir and the Yamuna ghats. On the third day, we went beyond the twin cities towards Gokul and the wider Braj region. Gurudutt ji's suggestion to stay based in Vrindavan and travel out from there worked very well for us. The short distance between the towns meant we did not lose much time on the road, while the extra day gave us a slower and more peaceful experience of Braj."
