Gokul Mandir: Gokulnath Temple, Timings, Story and Temples Guide

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·15 August 2026

Gokul Mandir

Quick Answer

Gokul Mandir usually means the Gokulnath Temple, the chief temple of Gokul, the sacred town on the Yamuna about 15 to 16 km from Mathura where, by the tradition, the infant Krishna was secretly raised by Yashoda and Nanda Baba. The mandirs of Gokul include the Gokulnath Temple, Raman Reti with its sacred sands, Nand Bhawan the home of Nanda, Thakurani Ghat, and Brahmand Ghat where Yashoda beheld the universe in Krishna's mouth; nearby Mahavan holds the ancient Chaurasi Khambha. The temples open early morning and again in the evening, and entry is free.

Gokul Mandir: an overview

On a stormy midnight, the story goes, a father waded across the flooded Yamuna with a newborn in a basket, the river parting to let him pass, to hide his son from a king who meant to kill him. That child was Krishna and the town that took him in and raised him was Gokul, on the eastern bank of the Yamuna about 15 to 16 km from Mathura. Gokul Mandir usually means the Gokulnath Temple, the chief shrine of the town and a great centre of the Vallabh or Pushti Marg, tradition, but the mandirs of Gokul are many, each remembering a pastime of the child Krishna. Our krishna janmabhoomi temple page covers his birthplace in Mathura, from which he was carried here.

This guide covers Gokul Mandir in full: the story of Krishna's secret childhood; the Gokulnath Temple; the other temples and ghats, Raman Reti, Nand Bhawan, Thakurani Ghat and Brahmand Ghat; the ancient sites of Old Gokul and Mahavan; the temple timings and entry; and how to reach Gokul and plan your visit.

From the ground (Gurudutt): Many visitors do Mathura and Vrindavan and skip Gokul, which is a pity, because Gokul is where the baby Krishna stories you grew up on actually live, the butter-stealing, the mud-eating, Yashoda's love. Start at the Gokulnath Temple, then walk down to the Yamuna ghats; at Brahmand Ghat the pandas will tell you the tale of Yashoda seeing the whole universe in her child's mouth and at Raman Reti you can take the soft sacred sand in your hands. If you have time, cross to Mahavan for the Chaurasi Khambha, eighty-four ancient pillars that feel their age. Go in the morning, keep some cash for the boat and offerings and mind the monkeys. Darshan is free. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The story of Gokul: Krishna's secret childhood

By the tradition, Krishna was born in a prison in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, for the tyrant Kansa, Devaki's brother, had been foretold that her eighth child would slay him and had imprisoned them. On the very night of his birth, by the tradition, Vasudeva carried the infant across the flooded Yamuna to Gokul, exchanging him for the newborn daughter of Yashoda and Nanda, so that Krishna might be raised in safety.

So it was in Gokul and the adjoining Mahavan, that Krishna spent his earliest childhood, full of the beloved pastimes: the stealing of butter, the eating of mud in which Yashoda saw the universe and the play upon the sacred sands with the cowherd boys, before the family later moved to Nandgaon and Vrindavan. We present the story as the cherished belief and tradition holds it, held with faith and recounted with reverence, the childhood of Krishna in Gokul.

Gokulnath Temple, the heart of Gokul

The Gokulnath Temple is the chief and most revered temple of Gokul, a great centre of the Vallabh or Pushti Marg, tradition founded by Shri Vallabhacharya, whose followers hold Gokul especially dear. It is thronged by pilgrims above all at Janmashtami, the birth of Krishna and at Annakut, the day after Diwali, when a mountain of food is offered to the Lord. The temple is the heart of a Gokul visit and its worship carries the intimate, loving mood of the Pushti Marg. Mathura's own dwarkadhish temple mathura belongs to the same beloved tradition. So the Gokulnath Temple is the heart of Gokul. So it is busiest at Janmashtami and Annakut. We present it with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith, the Gokulnath of Gokul.

The temples and ghats of Gokul

Around the town and along the Yamuna stand the other beloved shrines and ghats of Gokul, each remembering a pastime of the child Krishna.

  • Raman Reti: the sacred, soft sands where Krishna played with Balaram and the cowherd boys; devotees roll on the sands for his blessing and the Rangbihari Ji shrine, established by Sri Gyandas Ji Maharaj, stands here with an ashram and a small deer sanctuary.

  • Nand Bhawan: the home of Nanda Baba, set on a rise, where, by the tradition, Krishna and Balaram were raised, built by the divine architect Vishwakarma; devotees take darshan of Yogmaya here.

  • Thakurani Ghat: a revered ghat on the Yamuna, tied to Shri Vallabhacharya, who, by the tradition, had a darshan of the river goddess Yamuna here and made Gokul a centre of his devotion.

  • Brahmand Ghat: the ghat where, by the tradition, Yashoda beheld the whole universe, the brahmand, in the mouth of the mud-eating child Krishna; the Brahmand Bihari temple remembers this pastime.

So Raman Reti, Nand Bhawan, Thakurani Ghat and Brahmand Ghat are the other main sites of Gokul. So take them in on an unhurried walk by the Yamuna. We present them with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith, the shrines and ghats of Gokul.

Old Gokul and Mahavan

Adjoining Gokul is the older area of Mahavan, sometimes called Old Gokul, which holds some of the most ancient sites of the region. Chief among them is the Chaurasi Khambha, a striking ancient hall of eighty-four stone pillars, revered, by the tradition, in connection with Nanda Baba's palace and the childhood of Krishna. Nearby is the Chinta Haran Mahadev temple, the Shiva who, by the tradition, removes the worries, chinta, of his devotees.

So Mahavan or Old Gokul, adds the ancient Chaurasi Khambha and Chinta Haran Mahadev to a Gokul visit. So they are well worth the short hop across. We present them as the accounts and tradition record them, held with faith and recounted with reverence, the ancient sites of Mahavan.

Gokul temple timings and entry

The Gokul temples open early in the morning and reopen in the evening, closing through the middle of the day, in the rhythm of the temples of Braj; the exact hours vary by temple and between summer and winter, so the timings below are typical and best confirmed locally.

Typical timings

Gokulnath Temple

Morning and evening darshan, with a midday break

Raman Reti

About 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM

How to reach Gokul and plan your visit

Gokul is about 15 to 16 km from Mathura, on the eastern bank of the Yamuna, reached in about half an hour by taxi, auto or bus; the nearest railhead is Mathura Junction, about 15 km away and the nearest airports are Delhi and Agra. It is easily combined with Mathura, Vrindavan and Mahavan on a Braj pilgrimage. Our how to reach vrindavan and how to commute in vrindavan guides cover getting to and around Braj and our places to visit near mathura guide covers more of the region.

Questions Pilgrims Ask Before Visiting

Every answer is based on Gurudutt's on-ground experience guiding 50,000+ pilgrims through Mathura & Vrindavan since 2018.

Gokul Mandir usually refers to the Gokulnath Temple, the chief temple of Gokul, the riverside town about 15 to 16 km from Mathura where, by the tradition, the infant Krishna was secretly raised by his foster mother Yashoda and Nanda Baba. More broadly, the mandirs of Gokul include the Gokulnath Temple, Raman Reti, Nand Bhawan, Thakurani Ghat and Brahmand Ghat. So Gokul Mandir is the Gokulnath Temple and the sacred shrines of Gokul. We present them with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith.

"We booked the Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package with Experience My India and decided to add Gokul to our day. It turned out to be one of our favourite parts of the trip. Gurudutt ji suggested starting at Gokulnath Temple and then walking towards Raman Reti and the Yamuna ghats. Raman Reti was especially peaceful, and we enjoyed hearing the traditional stories connected with Krishna's childhood. We also visited Brahmand Ghat and Nand Bhawan before returning towards Mathura. The morning timing worked well because the temples have a midday break."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package gave us enough time to include Gokul without making the itinerary hectic. We spent the morning visiting Gokulnath Temple, Nand Bhawan and Raman Reti, and later walked along the Yamuna towards Thakurani Ghat and Brahmand Ghat. Gurudutt ji explained the traditional stories associated with each place, especially the story of Yashoda seeing the universe in Krishna's mouth at Brahmand Ghat. We also made a short visit to Mahavan to see Chaurasi Khambha. The quiet atmosphere of Gokul was a lovely contrast to busy Vrindavan."

"We chose the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package because we wanted to experience more of Braj beyond the famous temples. Gokul was a wonderful addition. Gurudutt ji took us first to Gokulnath Temple, followed by Raman Reti, Nand Bhawan and Brahmand Ghat. We also crossed towards Mahavan and visited Chaurasi Khambha and Chinta Haran Mahadev. What I liked most was that the day was not rushed. We had time to sit near the ghats, listen to the local stories and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The early morning visit was also comfortable, especially with the temples closing for the afternoon."
