Barsana holds a wealth of tourist places, from the great Shri Radha Rani temple atop the hill to the many temples, kunds, gardens and sacred forests of the town and its surroundings. This guide covers the tourist places of Barsana in full: the Radha Rani temple, the Kirti Mandir, Maan Mandir, Dan Garh, the Rangili Mahal and the other temples, the sacred Gahvar Van, Sankhari Khor, Prem Sarovar, Mor Kutir and the sakhi villages, along with the Lathmar Holi, the best time to visit and how to reach and see them. For the great temple itself, see our radha rani temple barsana guide.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Barsana rewards an unhurried, devotional visit, so come knowing it is the town of Radha, rich with the sites of her life and pastimes, spread across its sacred hills. Its heart is the Shri Radha Rani temple atop the hill, reached by a climb of a couple of hundred steps, so wear good shoes and take your time or use the palanquin or the motorable approach if you cannot climb. Beware that some lists elsewhere wrongly count Vrindavan temples like ISKCON or Radha Damodar among Barsana's sites; the true tourist places of Barsana are those of the town of Radha itself and its surroundings, which this guide covers. The town is busiest and most glorious at the Lathmar Holi and Radhashtami. Darshan is free. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

About Barsana, the town of Radha
Barsana is revered, by the tradition, as the town where Radha, the beloved of Krishna, was born and grew up, the daughter of Vrishabhanu and Kirti; so it is above all the town of Radha, the heart of the land of Radha in the western Braj. It lies about 45 to 50 km from Mathura, near Nandgaon and Govardhan and is built upon and around sacred hills.
By the tradition, Barsana is built upon sacred hills, revered as the seat of Brahma, the peaks honoured as bearing his four faces, so that the town is spread across the heights, crowned by the Radha Rani temple. The whole town and its surroundings are dense with the sites of Radha's life and the pastimes of the divine couple, from her palace-temple to the gardens, kunds and forests where, by the tradition, she played with Krishna and her sakhis. We present the sanctity of Barsana as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence. So Barsana is the tender and holy town of Radha, rich with sacred tourist places.
The Shri Radha Rani temple
The chief and most beloved tourist place of Barsana is the Shri Radha Rani temple, also called the Ladli Ji temple or the Shriji temple, the great temple of Radha atop the main hill of Barsana. Revered as the foremost temple of Radha in all of Braj, it enshrines Radha with Krishna and is reached by a climb of a couple of hundred steps up the hill or by palanquin or a motorable approach for those who cannot climb.
The temple is a beautiful structure of red and white stone, with carved pillars and arches and within are the beloved deities of Radha and Krishna and paintings of their pastimes; from the hill there are sweeping views over the town and the land of Braj. It is the beating heart of Barsana, thronged with devotees and most glorious at Radhashtami, the birth of Radha. So the Radha Rani temple is the great tourist place and the soul of Barsana. Our radha rani temple barsana guide covers it in full. We present the temple and its deities with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith, the beloved shrine of Radha atop the hill of her town.
Kirti Mandir, Maan Mandir and Dan Garh
Among the most cherished tourist places of Barsana are these three temples of the town and its hills.
Kirti Mandir: the temple dedicated to Radha and her mother, Kirti, revered as the only temple where Radha is seen upon her mother's lap, a tender shrine of the love of mother and daughter, near the Rangili Mahal in the town.
Maan Mandir (Maan Garh): the temple upon a hill revered as the place of Radha's maan, her loving sulk, where, by the tradition, Krishna lovingly pacified her; a tender site of the divine love-play and a place of bhajan associated with the revered saint Ramesh Baba Ji Maharaj.
Dan Garh (Dan Bihari): the temple upon a hill revered as the place of the daan leela, the playful toll pastime of Krishna and the gopis; an ancient and cherished temple of the town.
So the Kirti Mandir, Maan Mandir and Dan Garh are among the beloved tourist places of Barsana, each tied to a tender pastime or relationship of Radha. Our kirti mandir barsana guide covers the temple of Radha and her mother. We present these temples and their pastimes as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence, the tender shrines of the town of Radha, honouring her love, her maan and the playful pastimes of the divine couple, the divine and transcendent love-play of Radha and Krishna, never a worldly matter.
Rangili Mahal and the other temples
Barsana holds other beautiful temples among its tourist places.
Rangili Mahal: a grand and beautiful modern temple-palace of Radha and Krishna, near the Kirti Mandir, built under the guidance of the revered Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, with beautiful gardens and depictions of the pastimes, a magnificent sight.
Radha Kushal Bihari temple: a fort-like temple of almond hue, built by the royalty of Jaipur, set amid gardens, revered as a place where, by the tradition, Radha relaxed with her sakhis, beautiful especially in spring.
The Ashta Sakhi temples and shrines: temples and shrines of Radha and Krishna with the eight sakhis, the beloved companions of Radha, honoured in and around Barsana.
So the Rangili Mahal, the Radha Kushal Bihari temple and the sakhi shrines add to the wealth of tourist places of Barsana, from the grand modern palace-temple to the fort-like shrine amid gardens. So take in these beautiful temples along with the great Radha Rani temple. We present these temples and their pastimes with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith, the beautiful shrines of the town of Radha in the western Braj, dear to her devotees.
Gahvar Van, Sankhari Khor and the sacred sites
Beyond the temples, Barsana holds sacred forests, gorges and kunds among its tourist places, tied to the pastimes of Radha and Krishna.
Gahvar Van: the sacred forest of Barsana, the cherished grove where, by the tradition, Radha and Krishna played, on the parikrama of Shriji, dense with kunds and sacred spots, the green heart of the town's pilgrimage.
Sankhari Khor (Sankari Khor): the narrow gorge between two of Barsana's hills, revered as a place of the daan leela and central to the Lathmar Holi, a dramatic and sacred spot.
Pili Pokhar (Priya Kund): the sacred yellow pond, revered, by the tradition, as tied to the haldi, the turmeric, of Radha, a cherished kund of the town.
So the Gahvar Van, the Sankhari Khor and the Pili Pokhar are among the sacred natural sites of Barsana, tied to the pastimes of Radha and Krishna and to the Lathmar Holi. So take them in on the parikrama of Barsana and a fuller visit to the town of Radha. We present the sanctity of these sites as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence, the sacred forests, gorges and kunds of the town of Radha in the western Braj.
Prem Sarovar, Mor Kutir and the sakhi villages
Around Barsana, between it and Nandgaon, are further beloved tourist places tied to the divine love of Radha and Krishna.
Prem Sarovar: the beautiful lake of divine love, between Barsana and Nandgaon, revered, by the tradition, as a place of the tender pastimes of Radha and Krishna, a serene and cherished sarovar.
Mor Kutir: the site revered, by the tradition, as the place of the mor leela, the peacock-dance pastime, where Krishna danced for Radha in the form of a peacock, a tender and beloved spot.
The sakhi villages: the villages around Barsana revered as the homes of the ashta-sakhis, the eight companions of Radha, such as Chiksauli of Chitra Sakhi, tender sites of the land of Radha.
So Prem Sarovar, Mor Kutir and the sakhi villages enrich the tourist places of the Barsana area, spreading the pastimes of Radha and Krishna across the land between Barsana and nand mahal nandgaon; these tender sites are often taken in on a fuller pilgrimage or the parikrama. We present the sanctity of these sites and pastimes as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence, the divine and transcendent love-play of Radha and Krishna, never a worldly matter, honoured across the land of Radha.
The Lathmar Holi and the festivals
Barsana is famous across the world for the Lathmar Holi, the stick-play Holi, one of the most joyous and colourful festivals of the whole land of Braj. By the tradition, in a playful re-enactment of a pastime of Radha and Krishna, the women of Barsana playfully drive away the men of Nandgaon, who come to play Holi, with sticks, while the men shield themselves, amid clouds of colour and song; it is a spectacle of colour, devotion and joy that draws visitors from across the world.
Barsana is glorious too at Radhashtami, the birth of Radha, celebrated with great splendour at the Radha Rani temple and at Holi and the other festivals of Braj. So the Lathmar Holi and Radhashtami are the great times of Barsana, beautiful but very crowded. So time a visit for a festival for the splendour, ready for the crowds or an ordinary day for a calmer darshan. The Lathmar Holi and our braj festival calendar the festivals of Braj. We present the festivals with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith, the joyous celebrations of the town of Radha.
Timings, tips and how to reach
The temples of Barsana keep the general rhythm of the temples of Braj, open in the morning and the evening and closing for a while through the middle of the day, so plan your visits for the morning or the evening rather than the midday break and confirm the current timings locally. Darshan is free and any offering is voluntary. A few honest tips: the Radha Rani temple is atop the hill, reached by a climb of a couple of hundred steps, so wear good shoes, carry water and use the palanquin or the motorable approach if you cannot climb; the town is busiest and hardest to move through at the Lathmar Holi and Radhashtami; mind the monkeys, as across Braj; and the sacred forests and outlying sites are best seen with a guide or on the parikrama.
Barsana lies about 45 to 50 km from Mathura and about 21 km from Govardhan, in the western Braj near the Rajasthan border, close to Nandgaon; reach Mathura or Vrindavan first, then Barsana by road and the hilltop temple on foot or by palanquin. Our how to reach vrindavan guide covers arriving in the region, our best time to visit vrindavan mathura guide the seasons and our braj chaurasi kos yatra guide the great parikrama on which Barsana is honoured. We arrange Barsana and western-Braj tours taking in the Radha Rani temple and the tourist places of the town of Radha, with the transport, the routing, the timing around the closures and a knowledgeable local guide to bring the pastimes of Radha and Krishna alive. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free throughout; our same-day govardhan barsana tour covers Barsana and the western Braj, our two-day mathura vrindavan tour the twin cities and our one-day vrindavan tour package Vrindavan.
