Temple Name | Chinta Haran Mahadev Temple |
Location | Chintaharan Ghat, near Brahmand Ghat, Gokul, Mahavan |
District | Mathura, Uttar Pradesh |
Chinta Haran Mahadev Temple is located near Brahmand Ghat in Gokul, which is about 15 km from Mathura.
The location plays a big role in how the temple feels. Being close to the Yamuna, the surroundings are calmer, more open, and less crowded compared to central temple areas.
Even the air feels different here.
Is this the Mathura temple or the Chakrata one?
This page is about the Gokul temple in Mathura, not the identically named Chinta Haran Mahadev near Chakrata in Uttarakhand.
Two very different temples share the name, and search results often mix them up. Here is the plain difference so you reach the right one.
Feature | Gokul temple (this page) | Chakrata temple |
State | Uttar Pradesh (Braj) | Uttarakhand (Himalayas) |
Setting | Yamuna ghat at Gokul-Mahavan | Hilltop, short uphill walk |
Story | Yashoda and baby Krishna | A hill shrine to Shiva, no Krishna link |
Nearest city | Mathura, about 15 km | Chakrata, about 3 km |
What is the story behind the name?
Chinta Haran means the remover of worries, and the name comes from a moment in Krishna's childhood at Gokul.
The much loved katha tells of Yashoda opening baby Krishna's mouth after he was said to have eaten mud, and seeing the whole universe inside it. Shaken and anxious about who her child really was, she prayed to Shiva, who took away her worry and stayed on at this spot as Chinta Haran Mahadev.
An older Braj telling adds that Shiva had come down from Kailash for a glimpse of the infant Krishna, and waited here by the Yamuna until he received that darshan. Both threads explain why Shiva is worshipped in the heart of Krishna's Gokul.
What will you see inside the temple?
The sanctum holds a self-manifested Svayambhu shivling that devotees say contains 1,111 smaller lingas, a form rarely seen anywhere else.
Around it you will find a much loved image of Yashoda gently pulling baby Krishna's ears, along with murtis of Hanuman and of Balram with his consort Revati, and a small Shani shrine within the premises. Together they make the temple as much a Krishna-leela site as a Shiva one.
How do you reach Chinta Haran Mahadev?
The temple is about 15 km from Mathura Junction, reached by auto, taxi or private cab through Gokul-Mahavan.

Delhi | about 160 km |
By train, Mathura Junction is the nearest major railhead. By road, the Yamuna Expressway makes Gokul an easy run from Delhi or Agra. Local autos link the Mathura bus stand and Gokul directly.
Combine it with a one-day Gokul Vrindavan tour if you are arriving from Delhi or Agra for the day.
Is there an entry fee, and what should you offer?
Entry is free and there is no darshan ticket.
Devotees traditionally offer Yamuna water and bel leaves on the shivling. Dress is modest and simple, as at any Braj temple, and the mood here rewards a slow, quiet visit over a rushed one.

What is nearby on the Braj Parikrama route?
Chinta Haran Mahadev sits within the Gokul-Mahavan cluster and is usually visited alongside its neighbouring ghats and Krishna-leela spots.
● Brahmand Ghat, where Yashoda is said to have seen the universe in Krishna's mouth.
● Raman Reti, the soft sands where Krishna and Balram played, about 4 km away.
● Nand Bhavan, the home of Nanda and Yashoda in Gokul.
● Chaurasi Khamba, the ancient 84-pillar hall of Mahavan.
Many pilgrims fold these into a single Gokul morning. A two-day Gokul and Barsana darshan covers this whole cluster at an unhurried pace.
Good to know before you visit
● Footwear comes off before the sanctum, so wear slip-on shoes.
● The ghat can be slippery near the water, so step carefully.
● Keep an eye on bags and phones around the resident monkeys.
● Carry some cash, as small offerings and local rickshaws often work in cash.
● Mornings are the calmest for photography and a quiet darshan.
