Radha Bagh Barsana: an overview

In Barsana, the hill village revered as the birthplace of Radha, every lane and grove keeps some sweet memory of her; among the most tender of these is Radha Bagh, the garden of Radha. It is a naturally green upvan, a place of trees, shaded bowers and flowered paths, lovingly tended by the devotees, saints and sevaks of Braj in Radha's memory, with a bathing ghat revered as her own and, close by, the Lalita Kund and the Krishna Kund. By the cherished tradition of Braj it is a leela-sthali, a place where Radha roamed and played with her sakhis and the very soil is held to move the heart to devotion. Quieter than the hilltop temple, it is growing into a beloved stop for pilgrims. This guide gives the story and significance, what to see, the timings and evening aarti, how to reach and the sacred places nearby. For the road out to Barsana, see our vrindavan to barsana distance guide.

Why visit Radha Bagh:

  • A tender, green leela-sthali of Radha, quieter than the busy hilltop temple

  • Revered as a place where Radha roamed and played with her sakhis

  • A bathing ghat of Radha, with the Lalita Kund and Krishna Kund close by

  • A living centre of kirtan, bhajan and seva, with a beloved evening aarti

  • Easily seen with the Radha Rani temple and the other sites of Barsana

From the ground (Gurudutt): I love bringing devotees to Radha Bagh, because it is a soft, green corner of Barsana that most hurried visitors miss, giving all their time to the hilltop temple. The honest tip is to keep a little time for it, walk slowly under the trees, sit by the ghat and let a guide tell you the sweet leelas of Radha and her sakhis as you stand where they are remembered. The evening aarti here is lovely, with lamps and bhajans by the water. Come with a calm heart, dress simply and give it the unhurried half-hour it deserves. We hold all of this as the tender tradition of Braj, with reverence. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The story and significance of Radha Bagh

By the cherished tradition of Braj, Radha Bagh is revered as a garden of Radha's own pastimes, a leela-sthali where she roamed and played with her dear sakhis amid the trees and bowers; the kunj-lanes and flowered paths are held to breathe the sweetness, the madhurya, of Radha and the tradition remembers the divine and transcendent gop-leelas of Radha and Krishna in this very grove, never a worldly matter. The ghat of Radha Bagh is revered as a bathing place of Radha and the garden is worshipped as a mirror of her spiritual beauty and devotion. Its significance can be gathered in a few points:

  • A leela-sthali of Radha and her sakhis. The garden is revered as where Radha wandered and played with the sakhis, so it is worshipped as a place of her divine pastimes.

  • A ghat of Radha. Its bathing ghat is revered as Radha's own, a sacred spot where devotees pause in prayer and, with faith, take a holy dip.

  • A mirror of Radha's madhurya. The green beauty, the fragrance of flowers and the shade of the bowers are held to reflect the sweetness and grace of Radha herself.

  • A centre of seva and kirtan. Daily kirtan and bhajan resound here, saints gather to speak of the leelas and devotees serve the garden through planting, care of cows and flower offerings.

We present all of this as the cherished belief and tradition of Braj, held with faith and recounted with reverence.

In one line: Radha Bagh is the green garden and ghat of Radha in Barsana, a tender leela-sthali of her pastimes with the sakhis and a living place of kirtan, seva and the evening aarti.

What to see at Radha Bagh

  • The garden and kunj-paths. The heart of the place is the green upvan itself, its shaded bowers and flowered lanes, a soft and secluded spot to walk slowly and sit in prayer.

  • The ghat of Radha. A bathing ghat with steps down to the water, revered as Radha's own, where devotees pause in devotion and, with faith, take a holy dip.

  • Lalita Kund and Krishna Kund. Close by lie the Lalita Kund, revered as the resting place of Lalita sakhi and the Krishna Kund, held in memory of the meeting of Radha and Krishna.

  • Kirtan, bhajan and seva. The garden rings with daily kirtan and bhajan, saints speak of the leelas and Braj artists sometimes stage the pastimes of Radha and Krishna here.

  • The evening aarti. At dusk the ghat comes alive with lamps and devotional song, a gentle, moving close to the day.

The nearby kunds are gathered with the other sacred waters of Braj in our braj kunds and sarovars guide. We recount these as the cherished tradition of Braj, with reverence.

So Radha Bagh is best seen on a western Braj day with the temples of Barsana. We hold these as the tradition of Braj, with reverence.

Tips for your visit

  • Keep a little time for Radha Bagh; most visitors give all their time to the hilltop temple and miss this green corner.

  • Come early morning for a calm walk or at dusk for the lamps and bhajans of the evening aarti.

  • Dress modestly, keep your voice low and respect those in meditation and prayer.

  • Carry a small offering of flowers, a little water and some cash; entry is free.

  • If you take a dip at the ghat, do so with faith and respect and follow local guidance.

  • Take a guide for the leelas of Radha and her sakhis, which bring the garden alive.

How to plan your visit

The smoothest plan is to include Radha Bagh in a Barsana morning or a western Braj day: give time to the hilltop Radha Rani temple, walk down to Radha Bagh and the kunds and go on to Nandgaon and Prem Sarovar. Our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary helps you shape the days.

We arrange guided tours of Barsana, Radha Bagh and the western Braj towns, with pick-up from Mathura or Vrindavan, a comfortable vehicle and a knowledgeable Braj-born guide to tell the leelas of Radha on the spot. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free at the temples; our govardhan barsana tour covers the western cluster in a day, while the braj 84 kos yatra takes in Barsana, Nandgaon and the whole circuit over several days. "We booked the Same Day Govardhan Barsana Tour with Experience My India and started the day early at Govardhan. The cool morning made it much easier to visit Daan Ghati, Mansi Ganga and Mukharvind before continuing towards Barsana. We did not attempt the complete 21 km parikrama because we had limited time, but our guide explained the important points along the route. Later, we climbed the steps to Radha Rani Temple in Barsana. The combination of Giriraj and Radha Rani darshan made the day feel very special."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Govardhan Barsana Tour Package gave us enough time to explore the western side of Braj without rushing. We visited Govardhan in the morning, including Radha Kund, Shyam Kund and Kusum Sarovar, and then continued to Barsana. Kusum Sarovar was my favourite stop because the old sandstone ghats and peaceful water looked beautiful in the afternoon. We later visited Radha Rani Temple and spent some time walking around Barsana. Our driver suggested keeping comfortable footwear because both Govardhan and Barsana involve quite a bit of walking and climbing."

"We booked the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package because we wanted to experience more of Braj beyond the main Mathura and Vrindavan temples. On our third day, we planned a western Braj circuit covering Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon. We started at Govardhan with Mansi Ganga and Daan Ghati, then travelled towards Barsana for Radha Rani Temple. From there, Nandgaon was an easy addition because it is only around 9 km from Barsana. We visited Nand Bhavan and Pavan Sarovar before returning. The day had a lovely village feel and was much quieter than the busy temple lanes of Vrindavan."
