Why gau seva matters in Vrindavan
Gau seva is intimately tied to Krishna's own life in Braj. As Gopala and Govinda, Krishna tended the cows of Vrindavan, played His flute among them and loved them dearly, so serving the cows here is considered a direct and especially blessed act of devotion. Across Vrindavan and the wider Braj region, dedicated goshalas (cow sanctuaries) care for cows, from gentle temple herds to rescued, injured and abandoned street cattle and devotees take part by feeding them, by seva or by donating to their upkeep. Whether you come in person or give from afar, your gau seva supports real, daily care: green fodder, medicines and shelter.
Top goshalas to visit for gau seva
ISKCON Goshala (at the Krishna Balaram Mandir)
Within the serene grounds of the ISKCON Vrindavan temple, this is the most beautiful and easily accessible goshala in town, caring for hundreds of cows, calves and bulls in an impeccably clean, garden-surrounded setting. The cows are gentle and used to affection; for a small token amount (around ₹100 to ₹200), visitors are usually given jaggery-and-hay ladoos to feed the calves directly. You can also spend quiet time here and take the free prasadam served nearby (typically in the afternoon). A lovely, family-friendly first stop, close to the main temple; to stay nearby, see our iskcon vrindavan guest house guide.
Radha Surabhi Gaushala, near Radha Kund (Sudevi Dasi)
On the outskirts near sacred Radha Kund, this selfless sanctuary is devoted to rescuing and rehabilitating injured, abandoned, blind and permanently disabled cattle. It is run by Sudevi Dasi (Friederike Irina Bruning), a German-born devotee and Padma Shri awardee who has given four decades of her life to pure, non-commercial gau seva, caring for well over a thousand needy cows. It is deeply moving to witness: a rare, non-touristy glimpse of intensive medical care, separate wards for contagious disease and tender treatment of neglected street cows. An ideal, humbling stop if you are doing the Govardhan or Radha Kund parikrama.
Gau Seva Dham Hospital, near Hodal (Devi Chitralekha Ji)
Founded by the spiritual orator Devi Chitralekha Ji, this large animal hospital serves stray and critically ill animals and sits along National Highway 19 near Hodal, making it an inspiring rest stop on the drive into Vrindavan from Delhi. Unlike a simple shed, you will find fully operational intensive-care units, specialised recovery and treatment zones and dedicated care for helpless animals. The complex warmly welcomes travellers, often with complimentary tea and lassi prasad. A powerful place to witness compassionate animal care at scale.
Gouri Gopal Gaushala, on the Parikrama Marg (Aniruddhacharya Ji)
Part of the three-fold humanitarian centre guided by Shri Aniruddhacharya Ji Maharaj on the Vrindavan Parikrama Marg, which pairs a shelter for abandoned elderly women with a bustling gaushala. It is vibrant and community-focused, so you can combine cow seva with daily kirtan and the large free community kitchen (Annapurna Rasoi). For full details, see our shri aniruddhacharya ji ashram vrindavan and vrindavan old age home guides.
Other trusts
Smaller trusts, such as Gupt Vrindavan Dham, also run gau seva and welcome support; as with any trust, verify it independently and give only through its official channel. If you wish to visit a smaller goshala, it is wise to call ahead.

How to donate (gau daan)
If you cannot visit Braj in person, you can perform gau daan (a donation for cow care) online through these trusts. Give directly through each trust's own official website or portal, so that your funds go to real needs, green fodder, medicines and shelter. The following giving options are indicative examples as listed by the trusts; confirm the current amounts and options on each official site:
Goshala / trust | Example giving options (indicative; confirm) | How to give |
ISKCON Vrindavan | Feeding batches of cows; single-cow adoption for a month; a green-grass trolley | Via the official ISKCON Vrindavan website (verify the official link) |
Radha Surabhi (Sudevi Dasi) | A medical kit or fodder kit; special feed (daliya) for weak cows | Via the trust's official donation page (verify the link) |
Gau Seva Dham (Devi Chitralekha Ji) | Medical-care funding; infrastructure contribution; general animal feeding | Via the Gau Seva Dham official portal (verify the link) |
Gupt Vrindavan Dham | First-roti seva; a green-fodder kit; adopt a calf for a month | Via the trust's official channel (verify the link) |
Tax note (India): many established gau seva trusts offer Section 80G tax exemption for Indian taxpayers. Confirm the trust's current 80G status and keep your official receipt; this is general information, not tax advice, so check with the trust or your tax adviser.
Give safely: avoid fake appeals
Cow-care appeals, sadly, attract fraud, so give wisely:
Donate only through the trust's own official channel. Use the goshala's official website or verified portal, confirmed directly with them, never an unverified link, a stranger or a roadside collector.
Verify the trust. Look for an established, registered trust with a track record, real presence and proper receipts; the goshalas above are well known, but still give through their official routes.
Keep your receipt and claim 80G only if eligible. Get an official receipt; confirm the trust's 80G status before assuming a deduction.
Pay securely. Use secure, recognised payment methods; be wary of requests to pay an individual directly or by unusual means. For arranging seva from abroad, see our vrindavan online puja safety guide.
Savamani: a cow feast on a special day
A beautiful way to mark a milestone, a birthday, an anniversary or an ancestral remembrance, is to sponsor a Savamani, a special feast for the cows (often daliya and green fodder). Because fresh fodder must be arranged, call the goshala's helpline two to three days in advance to organise it properly. We can help you arrange a Savamani or a cow feeding on your chosen day and share photos or a video of it.
Let us help with your gau seva
As Braj-born locals, we can include a goshala visit in your Vrindavan trip, from feeding the calves at the ISKCON goshala to the moving sanctuaries near Radha Kund, from around ₹1,499 per person for a shared day tour. We can also help you arrange a Savamani cow feast on a special day, or, if you are far away, do a verified gau daan on your behalf through a trust's official channel and share proof with you, transparently, with a real person accountable to you. We are a travel company and local guides, not an official agent of any trust and always honest about where your giving goes.
