Phoolon Wali Holi Vrindavan 2027: the date
Phoolon Wali Holi in Vrindavan in 2027 falls on Saturday, 20 March, on Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi, known as Rangbharni Ekadashi, at the beloved Banke Bihari temple. It is the day the flower shower is held, a brief, magical few minutes during the morning darshan, when the priests rain fresh petals down on the devotees. It falls in the great Holi season of Braj, two days before the main Holi on 22 March and is for many the most beautiful of all the Braj Holis. To experience it, with a Braj guide who knows the temple, the crowds and the safe way to see it, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan it.
From the ground (Gurudutt): There is no more beautiful moment in all of Braj than the flower Holi at Banke Bihari; when the petals rain down and Thakur ji smiles through them, grown men weep. I have taken guests from across the world to see it, young and old and their faces I never forget. But I will be honest with you, it is also the most crowded and intense and the temple is small; I always tell my guests, come very early, keep your safety first and let me stand with you. See it right and it will stay in your heart forever. Radhe Radhe.
What is Phoolon Wali Holi?
Phoolon Wali Holi, the flower Holi or Phoolon ki Holi, is the most beautiful of Braj's Holi celebrations, kept at the Banke Bihari temple:
A Holi of flowers, not colours. At Phoolon Wali Holi, instead of the colours and water of an ordinary Holi, the temple priests shower thousands of kilograms of fresh rose, marigold and jasmine petals down onto the devotees from the upper galleries of the temple; the air fills with falling flowers and their fragrance, a rain of petals over the crowd.
A brief, magical window. The flower shower is held during the morning darshan, for a brief, magical window of only about 20 to 30 minutes, when Thakur Banke Bihari ji gives darshan amid the falling flowers; it is short, so the whole crowd presses to be there for it, which is why it is so intense.
The most beautiful Holi. For many, the flower Holi is the most beautiful and moving of all the Braj Holis, gentle and exquisite where the Lathmar Holi is wild; to stand beneath the raining petals before Banke Bihari is, for a devotee, an unforgettable joy.
It is held at the banke bihari temple; for the stick Holis of the twin towns, see our lathmar holi barsana 2027 guide.
Rangbharni Ekadashi, the day Braj's Holi begins
Phoolon Wali Holi falls on Rangbharni Ekadashi, Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi, the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of the month of Phalguna, which in 2027 is Saturday, 20 March. Rangbharni Ekadashi, also called Amalaki or Amla Ekadashi, is held to be the day the Holi truly begins at Banke Bihari and across Braj, when the deity is first played with colour and flowers and the great days of colour follow up to the main Holi. So the flower Holi at Banke Bihari is not only beautiful but deeply auspicious, marking the opening of the Holi at the temple; it is one of the dearest days of the year in Vrindavan. The marble prem mandir vrindavan and the temples of Vrindavan also keep the Holi joy in these days.
The Banke Bihari temple, the venue
Phoolon Wali Holi is held at the Banke Bihari temple, the most beloved temple of Vrindavan:
The beloved Thakur Banke Bihari. The Banke Bihari temple is the most beloved and busiest temple of Vrindavan, home of Thakur Banke Bihari ji, a self-manifest form of Krishna; it is a place of intense, joyful devotion all year and dearest of all at the flower Holi and Janmashtami.
A compact, crowded temple. The temple is compact, in the narrow lanes of old Vrindavan and even on ordinary days it is very busy; at Phoolon Wali Holi the crowds are extreme, among the largest of the year, so the small temple and the brief flower shower together make it intense and demanding of care.
No photography inside. Photography, phones and cameras are generally not allowed inside the Banke Bihari temple, so the flower Holi is to be experienced with the heart and eyes, not the phone; do not plan on taking pictures inside and keep your phone safely away in the crowd.
See our banke bihari temple page for the temple and its darshan and our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide and confirm the day's darshan hours locally.
How to experience Phoolon Wali Holi safely
Phoolon Wali Holi is beautiful but among the most crowded and intense events of the year, so plan for it above all with safety in mind:
Arrive very early. There are no VIP passes or special tickets; everyone enters the same way, so arrive very early, hours before the morning darshan and the flower shower, to be safely inside; the brief window and the small temple mean the crowd presses hard and latecomers cannot force their way in safely.
Put your safety first. If the crush is too great, do not force your way in; the flower shower is only a few minutes and no darshan is worth a dangerous crowd. Stay calm, keep to safe edges, follow the temple and police guidance and be ready to step back; your safety and your family's comes before any moment of darshan.
Go with a local and mind who you bring. Go with a Braj local who knows the temple, the safe approaches and the timing; think very carefully before bringing young children or elderly or frail family, into the peak crush and consider a calmer darshan on another day or a safe vantage for them. Keep phones and valuables sealed and safe.

How to reach Vrindavan and plan your trip
Vrindavan is easily reached, but a Holi trip takes planning:
Reaching Vrindavan and the temple. Vrindavan is about 150 km from Delhi and only about 14 km from Mathura; at Holi the roads and the town are very busy and cars are kept out of the old lanes, so park at the edge and take an e-rickshaw towards the Banke Bihari temple, then walk the last narrow lanes on foot, starting very early.
Where to base. Base yourself in Vrindavan itself or in Mathura and book your stay very early, for Holi is the busiest season in Braj and rooms fill months ahead; staying in Vrindavan lets you reach the temple early for the flower Holi.
Fit it into the Braj Holi. Many travellers add the Phoolon Wali Holi at Vrindavan on the 20th to the Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon on the 16th and 17th and the Chhadi Mar Holi at Gokul on the 19th; allow at least three or four days for the whole Braj Holi.
See our how to commute in vrindavan guide for reaching the temple, and, for visitors from abroad, our vrindavan for foreign tourists guide.
