Lathmar Holi Barsana 2027: the dates
Lathmar Holi at Barsana in 2027 is on Tuesday, 16 March, with Laddu Holi at Barsana the day before, on Monday, 15 March and the play returned at Nandgaon on Wednesday, 17 March. The main Holi is on Monday, 22 March (Holika Dahan on 21 March). Lathmar Holi falls well before the main Holi, in the great forty-day Holi season of Braj, so a Holi journey to Braj is best understood as a festival across several towns and days, not one afternoon. To be at Barsana for the Lathmar Holi, with a Braj guide who knows the safe places to watch, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan it.
From the ground (Gurudutt): The Lathmar Holi is the wildest, most joyful thing you will ever see; the women of Barsana with their lath, the men of Nandgaon shielding and singing, colour everywhere, the whole hill of Radha ringing with it. It is my own land and I host my guests for the Barsana Holi every year, so I know the day and I know where to stand and where not to, for it is very crowded and intense. Come with me on the 16th of March and you will see it safely and truly. Radhe Radhe.
What is Lathmar Holi?
Lathmar Holi, the Holi of sticks, is the most famous of Braj's Holi celebrations, played between the twin towns of Radha and Krishna:
The stick Holi of Radha and Krishna. On the day, the men of Nandgaon, Krishna's town, come to Barsana, Radha's town, to play Holi and to try to plant a flag on the Radha Rani temple; the women of Barsana, as Radha and her friends, playfully drive them off with lath, long sticks, while the men shield themselves and sing and taunt in return.
The legend. It re-enacts the playful love and banter of Radha and Krishna, from the days when Krishna would come from Nandgaon to tease Radha and the gopis of Barsana and they would chase him off in fun; so the whole festival is a living play of their love.
The return at Nandgaon. The next day, on 17 March, the men of Barsana go to Nandgaon and the women of Nandgaon return the play with their sticks; so the two towns share the festival, as they share the love of Radha and Krishna. It is rehearsed and celebrated as joyful play and it draws enormous crowds.
It is held at the radha rani temple barsana and its courtyards; for the twin towns and their bond, see our barsana vs nandgaon guide and the radha rani aarti lyrics of the temple.
Laddu Holi, the sweet Holi before it
The day before Lathmar Holi, on Monday, 15 March 2027, Barsana keeps Laddu Holi, the Holi of sweets. When the invitation to the Holi is brought from Nandgaon to Barsana and accepted, the joy is celebrated by joyfully tossing and sharing laddus, the sweet, at the Radha Rani temple, in a shower of sweets and colour. It is a beautiful, joyful prelude to the Lathmar Holi, a little quieter but full of delight and marks the true beginning of the great Barsana Holi. Many pilgrims come a day early to see the Laddu Holi and then the Lathmar Holi the next day, on 16 March.
The Braj Holi 2027 calendar
Lathmar Holi is only the most famous of many Holi celebrations across Braj, which run for weeks. The main events of the 2027 Braj Holi journey:
Laddu Holi at Barsana, 15 March. The sweet Holi at Radha's town, the day before Lathmar Holi, when laddus are showered at the Radha Rani temple.
Lathmar Holi at Barsana, 16 March. The famous stick Holi, when the men of Nandgaon come to Barsana and the women drive them off with lath; the most famous of all.
Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon, 17 March. The play is returned at Krishna's town, the day after Barsana.
Phoolon ki Holi at Vrindavan. The beautiful flower Holi, above all at the Banke Bihari temple, where the priests shower the crowd with flower petals, in the days around the middle of March; a gentler, exquisite Holi.
Holika Dahan and the main Holi. Holika Dahan on 21 March and the great Rangwali Holi, the main day of colour, on 22 March 2027, across Braj and all India; and the Dauji Huranga at nearby Baldeo just after, around 23 March.
The flower Holi is at the banke bihari temple and the temple Holi at the dwarkadhish temple of Mathura and the temples of gokul.
How to experience Lathmar Holi 2027 safely
Lathmar Holi is joyful but very crowded and intense, so plan for it with care:
Watch from a safe vantage point. The main courtyards of the Radha Rani temple, where the sticks and the play are thickest, get very intense and crowded; watch from a safe vantage point, a rooftop or an edge, rather than the heart of the crush, especially with family, children or elders.
Go with a local. The crowds, the road closures and the timings are best handled with a Braj local who knows the day, the safe spots and the way in and out; it is not a festival to arrive at cold and a guide makes it safe and truly seen.
Protect yourself and your things. Wear old clothes you do not mind colouring, protect your eyes and skin, keep phones and valuables in a sealed bag and be ready for colour, water and crowds; go early, as the towns fill fast.
How to reach Barsana and plan your trip
Barsana lies in the west of Braj and a Holi trip takes planning:
Reaching Barsana. Barsana is about 45 to 50 km from Vrindavan and Mathura, about an hour and a half by road; at Holi the roads are very busy and often closed near the town, so plan transport and arrival carefully and start early. The Radha Rani temple crowns the hill, reached by a climb or a palki.
Where to base. Most travellers base themselves in Vrindavan or Mathura and make day trips to Barsana and Nandgaon for the Lathmar Holi and to Vrindavan for the flower Holi; book stays very early, for Holi is the busiest season in Braj.
Plan for several days. As the Braj Holi runs across many towns and days, allow at least three or four days to see the Laddu and Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon on 15 to 17 March, the flower Holi at Vrindavan and the temple Holi, rather than rushing one day.
See our how to commute in vrindavan guide for reaching Barsana and our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary for planning your days.
