Chhadi Mar Holi Gokul 2027: the date
Chhadi Mar Holi at Gokul in 2027 is on Friday, 19 March, celebrated around the historic Murlidhar Ghat and the ancient temples of Gokul, the town of Krishna's infancy. The main festivities unfold in the afternoon, generally from around midday to late afternoon, when the grand procession moves through the streets. It falls a few days after the Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon, in the great Holi season of Braj, so a Holi journey to Braj is best understood as a festival across several towns and days. To be at Gokul for the Chhadi Mar Holi, with a Braj guide who was born there and knows the safe places to watch, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan it.
From the ground (Gurudutt): This one is truly close to my heart, for Gokul is my own birthplace. Our Holi is gentle, for here Krishna is a baby; we do not use the heavy lath of Barsana, but soft chhadis, canes and the gopis chase the men with them in play, with colour and petals flying and then everyone is given Makhan-Mishri, the butter and sugar that little Krishna loved best. It is sweeter and less fierce than the Lathmar Holi and many families love it. Come home to Gokul with me on the 19th of March. Radhe Radhe.
What is Chhadi Mar Holi?
Chhadi Mar Holi, the cane Holi, is the gentle Holi of Gokul, Krishna's infancy town:
The gentle cane Holi. At Chhadi Mar Holi, the women of Gokul, as the gopis, playfully chase and strike the men with chhadis, soft, flexible canes, rather than the heavy lath or sticks, of the Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon; the soft cane is used because here, at Gokul, Krishna is worshipped as an infant, so the play is tender.
Colour, petals and procession. The men take the gentle blows in play, while natural herbal colours, flower petals and wet colours fly through the air; the main festivities unfold in the afternoon, when a grand procession moves through the streets and lanes of Gokul, full of colour, song and joy.
Makhan-Mishri, Krishna's favourite. Devotees are given Makhan-Mishri, fresh churned butter and sugar candy, the sweet that the infant Krishna, the makhan-chor or butter thief, is famous for loving; it is a beautiful, fitting prasad for the Holi of baby Krishna's own town.
For the heavier stick Holi at the twin towns, see our lathmar holi barsana 2027 guide and our barsana vs nandgaon guide.
Why the soft cane: Gokul, the town of baby Krishna
The gentleness of the Chhadi Mar Holi comes from Gokul itself, the cradle of Krishna's infancy:
The town of infant Krishna. Gokul, on the banks of the Yamuna about 15 km south-east of Mathura, is where the infant Krishna was raised by Nanda and Yashoda, after Vasudeva carried him across the river; it is the home of his earliest, sweetest baby-leelas, the butter-stealing and the childhood play.
A gentle Holi for a baby. Because Krishna here is a baby, worshipped as the infant, the Holi is tender: soft chhadis in place of the heavy lath and Makhan-Mishri, the butter and sugar he loved, as prasad. It is a sweeter, gentler counterpart to the fierce Lathmar Holi, in keeping with the age of Krishna at Gokul.
The old and the new Gokul. Gokul and its ancient neighbour Mahavan, the old Gokul, together hold the whole of Krishna's infancy and the Holi joy fills both; the Chhadi Mar Holi is the living festival of this cradle of the baby Krishna.
See our gokul page for the town and our gokul vs mahavan guide for Gokul and the old Gokul, Mahavan.
Where it is held: Murlidhar Ghat and the temples of Gokul
Chhadi Mar Holi is celebrated in the heart of Gokul, by the Yamuna:
Murlidhar Ghat and the ghats. The celebrations centre on the historic Murlidhar Ghat and the Yamuna ghats of Gokul, where the procession, the colour and the play gather; the riverside setting, in the town of baby Krishna, makes it especially beautiful.
The ancient temples. The Chhadi Mar Holi also fills the ancient temples of Gokul, such as the Gokulnath temple and the Nand Bhavan, dear to the Vallabh tradition and the lanes between them, with colour, song and the procession; the whole town keeps the festival.
A short way from Mahavan. Nearby Mahavan, the old Gokul, with its ancient Chaurasi Khamba, shares in the infancy of Krishna and the Holi joy; the two together are the cradle of the baby Krishna, easily seen on one visit.
See the braj yamuna ghats and leela sites of the Yamuna and the 84 khambha temple mahavan of the old Gokul nearby.
Chhadi Mar Holi in the Braj Holi 2027 calendar
The Chhadi Mar Holi at Gokul is one of many Holi celebrations across Braj, which run for weeks. The main events of the 2027 Braj Holi journey:
Laddu and Lathmar Holi at Barsana, 15 to 16 March. The sweet Holi and the famous stick Holi at Radha's town.
Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon, 17 March. The return of the stick Holi at Krishna's town, the day after Barsana.
Chhadi Mar Holi at Gokul, 19 March. The gentle cane Holi of baby Krishna's town, with the procession and the Makhan-Mishri prasad.
Phoolon ki Holi at Vrindavan. The beautiful flower Holi, above all at the Banke Bihari temple, where the priests shower the crowd with flower petals; a gentler, exquisite Holi.
Holika Dahan and the main Holi. Holika Dahan on 21 March and the great Rangwali Holi, the main day of colour, on 22 March 2027, across Braj and all India; and the Dauji Huranga at nearby Baldeo just after, around 23 March.
The flower Holi is at the banke bihari temple and the temple Holi at the dwarkadhish temple of Mathura.
How to experience Chhadi Mar Holi safely
Chhadi Mar Holi is gentler than the Lathmar Holi, but still crowded, so plan for it with care:
Watch from a safe spot. The lanes and ghats where the procession and the play are thickest get crowded; watch from a safe spot, an edge or a place your guide knows, rather than the heart of the crush, especially with family, children or elders, though the soft chhadi and gentle spirit make it a good festival for families.
Go with a local. The crowds, the road closures and the timings are best handled with a Braj local who knows the day, the safe spots and the way in and out; a guide and one born in Gokul, makes it safe and truly seen.
Protect yourself and your things. Wear old clothes you do not mind colouring, protect your eyes and skin, keep phones and valuables in a sealed bag and be ready for colour, petals, water and crowds; go early and enjoy the Makhan-Mishri prasad.
How to reach Gokul and plan your trip
Gokul lies south-east of Mathura and a Holi trip takes planning:
Reaching Gokul. Gokul is about 15 km south-east of Mathura and about 25 to 30 km from Vrindavan, on the banks of the Yamuna; at Holi the roads and lanes are busy, so plan transport and arrival carefully and start early. Nearby Mahavan, the old Gokul, is only a few km on.
Where to base. Most travellers base themselves in Vrindavan or Mathura and make a day trip to Gokul for the Chhadi Mar Holi on the 19th, often with Mahavan; book stays very early, for Holi is the busiest season in Braj.
Fit it into the Braj Holi. Many travellers add the Gokul Chhadi Mar Holi on the 19th to the Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon on the 16th and 17th and the flower Holi at Vrindavan; allow at least three or four days for the whole Braj Holi.
See our distance from mathura to gokul guide for reaching Gokul and our how to commute in vrindavan guide for getting around Braj.
