Gokul vs Mahavan: the short answer
Gokul and Mahavan are two adjacent towns of Braj, only about 4 km apart and about 15 km south-east of Mathura and both are the infancy home of baby Krishna, brought here across the Yamuna by Vasudeva and raised by Nanda Baba and Yashoda. They are so bound that their names are often used together. The honest picture, which many guides blur, is this: Mahavan, the great forest, is the ancient site, Purana Gokul, the old Gokul, home to the Chaurasi Khamba, the ancient 84-pillared hall held to be Nanda's house, where the baby-leelas are held to have unfolded; and the riverside Gokul town, on the Yamuna, grew later as its pilgrim face, the seat of the Vallabh tradition. So they are two homes of one story, both revered as Nanda's home. To see both and the whole of Braj, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan it.
From the ground (Gurudutt): This one is close to my heart, for I was born in the Gokul and Mahavan area; it is my own home. People ask which is the real Gokul and I tell them honestly: Mahavan is the ancient one, our Purana Gokul, where the Chaurasi Khamba, Nanda's old house, still stands and the riverside Gokul grew later as the pilgrim town. But do not trouble over which is real; both are baby Kanhaiya's home and you should see both, only a few minutes apart. Come and I will show you the land where Krishna was a baby. Radhe Radhe.
What Gokul is
Gokul is the riverside pilgrim town of baby Krishna, on the Yamuna:
The town of infant Krishna. Gokul, on the banks of the Yamuna about 15 km south-east of Mathura, is revered as the town where the infant Krishna was raised by Nanda and Yashoda, after Vasudeva carried him across the river to escape Kansa; it is the home of his earliest, sweetest baby-leelas.
The seat of the Vallabh tradition. Gokul is the great seat of the Vallabh Sampradaya, the Pushtimarg founded by Vallabhacharya and its Gokulnath temple, the Nand Mahal and the Thakurani Ghat, where the goddess Yamuna is held to have appeared to Vallabhacharya, are dear to that tradition.
The ghats and the sacred sands. Gokul holds beautiful Yamuna ghats, Raman Reti, the soft sacred sands where the child Krishna is held to have played and Brahmand Ghat, revered as the place where Yashoda saw the whole universe within the infant Krishna's mouth; it is a town of tender devotion.
See our gokul page for the town and the braj yamuna ghats and leela sites of the Yamuna.
What Mahavan is
Mahavan is the ancient Gokul, the original scriptural site of Krishna's infancy:
Purana Gokul, the old Gokul. Mahavan, whose name means the great forest, is also called Purana Gokul, the old Gokul and is revered as the ancient, original site of Krishna's infancy; here, by tradition, the baby-leelas of Putana, the cart, the twin trees and the butter-mortar unfolded, the scriptural Gokul of the Bhagavata.
The Chaurasi Khamba. At the heart of Mahavan stands the Chaurasi Khamba, the eighty-four-pillared hall held to be the very house of Nanda Maharaj, where baby Krishna was raised; its genuinely ancient stonework, on a rise reached by a flight of steps, makes it a deeply atmospheric darshan.
Ancient and atmospheric. The old palace, by tradition of great antiquity, was destroyed in the course of time and rebuilt using the same old pillars; quieter and more ancient than the riverside Gokul, Mahavan carries the feel of the old, original Braj, with the Yogmaya and Putana temples nearby.
See our 84 khambha temple mahavan page for the Chaurasi Khamba and the old Gokul.
The key differences
In short, the two differ in a few clear ways, though both are baby Krishna's home:
Old or new. Mahavan is the ancient, original site, Purana Gokul, of great antiquity; the riverside Gokul town grew later as its pilgrim face. So Mahavan is the old Gokul and Gokul the newer pilgrim town, only about 4 km apart.
The chief site. Mahavan's heart is the Chaurasi Khamba, the ancient 84-pillared hall held to be Nanda's house; Gokul's are the Gokulnath temple, the Nand Mahal and the Yamuna ghats, dear to the Vallabh tradition. Both are revered as Nanda's home.
The feel. Mahavan is quieter, more ancient, of stone and antiquity; Gokul is a riverside pilgrim town, alive with aartis and the Vallabh worship on the Yamuna. Together they hold the whole of Krishna's infancy.
Are Gokul and Mahavan the same?
Not exactly and yet they are deeply one. They are two distinct, adjacent towns, about 4 km apart and each has its own great house of Nanda revered as Krishna's infancy home, the Chaurasi Khamba at Mahavan and the Nand Mahal at Gokul; local priests themselves do not all agree which is the original. The honest tradition, which many guides blur, holds Mahavan to be the ancient scriptural Gokul, where the baby-leelas of the Bhagavata unfolded and the riverside Gokul town to have grown later as its pilgrim face, the seat of the Vallabh Pushtimarg. So scripture often uses the name Gokul broadly for this whole cowherd home of the infant Krishna, which includes both. The wise pilgrim does not trouble over which is real, but takes darshan at both with love, for both are the home of baby Kanhaiya. From here, in time, the family moved on to Nandgaon and Vrindavan; our distance from mathura to gokul guide covers reaching this cradle of Krishna's childhood.
Which should you visit?
The honest answer is both, for they are only minutes apart; but here is what each offers:
Visit Gokul for. The riverside town of baby Krishna, the Gokulnath temple and Nand Mahal of the Vallabh tradition, Raman Reti with its elephant aarti, the Brahmand Ghat and the Yamuna ghats; the living, devotional pilgrim face of Krishna's infancy.
Visit Mahavan for. The ancient Chaurasi Khamba, the 84-pillared hall of Nanda's house, the old, atmospheric stonework of Purana Gokul and the feel of the original, scriptural Gokul where the baby-leelas unfolded; a quieter, deeply ancient darshan.
Visit both, ideally. As they lie only about 4 km apart, both are easily seen together; together they hold the whole of Krishna's infancy, the old Gokul and the new and neither is complete without the other.
How to visit both, best time and tips
Gokul and Mahavan are easily visited together, south-east of Mathura:
Reaching them. Both lie about 15 km south-east of Mathura and about 25 to 30 km from Vrindavan, near each other on the same side of the Yamuna; most pilgrims visit both on one trip, by car with a Braj guide, in two to three hours or a half day.
Seeing them together. See Gokul's ghats, Gokulnath and Raman Reti and Mahavan's Chaurasi Khamba, on the same visit; photography rules differ between the sites, so follow the local custom and treat both with reverence as baby Krishna's home.
Best time. October to March is the most pleasant season; Gokul and Mahavan are dearest at Janmashtami, Krishna's birthday and at Nand Mahotsav, the day after, when the infant Krishna's home overflows with joy. Confirm the day's darshan hours locally, as they change with the season and festivals.
