Is Gokul and Vrindavan the same? The short answer

The short answer is no: Gokul and Vrindavan are two different places, not one. Both lie in Braj, the land of Krishna and both are sacred to him, but they are separate towns about 27 km apart and they belong to different chapters of his life. Gokul is the village where the baby Krishna was raised in his infancy, across the Yamuna to the south-east of Mathura; Vrindavan is the town of his childhood and youth, north of Mathura, filled today with temples. It is easy to see why they are confused, since both are Krishna's abodes, but on a pilgrimage they are two distinct stops. Why people confuse Gokul and Vrindavan

The confusion is understandable and comes from a few things:

• Both are Krishna's abodes. Both Gokul and Vrindavan are dear homes of Krishna in Braj, so people naturally group them together and sometimes blur the two into one.

• The name Vrindavan is used loosely. The word Vrindavan is sometimes used loosely for the whole of Braj or for Krishna's land in general, which can make the specific town of Vrindavan seem to include Gokul.

• The leelas run together. In the retelling, the stories of Krishna's infancy and childhood flow into one another, so the places of the two can seem the same in memory, though the tradition keeps them distinct.

Gokul: the village of Krishna's infancy

Gokul is the village where the story of Krishna in Braj begins:

• Krishna's infancy. On the very night of his birth in Mathura, the baby Krishna was carried across the Yamuna to Gokul and raised in secret in the home of Nanda and Yashoda, so Gokul holds the earliest and most tender of his leelas, his infancy.

• Its sites and feel. The Nand Bhavan, the home of Nanda and the soft sacred sands of Raman Reti are the heart of Gokul, which keeps a quiet, rustic, deeply devotional feel, gentler and less crowded than the temple towns.

• Where it is. Gokul lies across the Yamuna to the south-east of Mathura, about 15 km from the city, in the eastern part of Braj.

Vrindavan: the town of Krishna's childhood

Vrindavan is the town where Krishna grew and played and the great centre of Braj devotion:

• Krishna's childhood and youth. As Krishna grew, his childhood pastimes, the raas with the gopis, the play among the groves and the lifting of Govardhan nearby, unfolded in and around Vrindavan, so it holds the leelas of his boyhood and youth.

• The town of temples. Vrindavan is dense with temples, from the beloved Banke Bihari and the marble Prem Mandir to the serene ISKCON temple and the mysterious grove of Nidhivan; it is a busy, immersive temple town.

• Where it is. Vrindavan lies to the north of Mathura, about 14 km from the city and about 27 km from Gokul, in the northern part of Braj.

The difference in Krishna's story

The clearest way to tell Gokul and Vrindavan apart is by their place in Krishna's life, which runs across three towns of Braj:

• Mathura, the birth. Krishna was born in Mathura, in the prison of the tyrant Kansa, the first of the towns.

• Gokul, the infancy. He was carried at once to Gokul, where he was raised as a baby in the home of Nanda and Yashoda, the second chapter.

• Vrindavan, the childhood. As he grew, his childhood and youthful leelas unfolded in Vrindavan, the third chapter; so Gokul comes before Vrindavan in the story, of infancy before childhood.

How far apart are they and visiting both

Being separate towns, Gokul and Vrindavan are visited as two distinct stops:

• About 27 km apart. Gokul and Vrindavan are about 27 km apart, roughly an hour by road, as Gokul lies across the Yamuna to the south-east of Mathura and Vrindavan to the north; Mathura sits between them.

• Both on a Braj trip. Because both are dear to Krishna, pilgrims almost always visit both, along with Mathura, on a Braj pilgrimage; a day or two covers the three towns of his early life.

• A natural order. Many follow the story, from Mathura of the birth to Gokul of the infancy to Vrindavan of the childhood, though the easy travel loop may vary; either way, both belong on the journey.

Which should you visit

For most pilgrims, the answer is both, for they tell two chapters of one story:

• Visit both for the full story. To see only one is to miss half the tale; Gokul gives the tenderness of Krishna's infancy, Vrindavan the joy of his childhood and its temples and together with Mathura they complete his early life.

• If your time is short. If you must choose, Vrindavan holds far more temples and darshan and is the fuller day; but if you love the quiet, older Braj, Gokul is a gentle, moving stop that many treasure.

• The wider Braj. With more time, add Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon, so the pilgrimage grows from the three towns to the whole of Braj.
