The 2027 Vrindavan Ekadashi and crowd calendar
Every Ekadashi of 2027, with the Vrindavan crowd level and the key safety and tourist notes for the month. Dates are on the Vaishnava reckoning followed in Vrindavan; confirm locally before fasting.
Month | Ekadashi and date | Crowd level | Crucial tourist and safety notes |
January | Saphala: 3 Jan (Sun); Pausha Putrada: 19 Jan (Tue) | Moderate to high | Severe morning fog can delay temple-entry timelines. The mid-month Putrada Ekadashi draws winter parikrama pilgrims. |
February | Shattila: 2 Feb (Tue); Jaya (Bhaimi): 17 Feb (Wed) | Moderate | The best climate window. Midweek dates mean the queues inside Banke Bihari are relatively orderly. |
March | Vijaya: 4 Mar (Thu); Amalaki (Rangbhari): 18 Mar (Thu) | CRITICAL, EXTREME | Rangbhari Ekadashi (about 18 to 20 March) merges into the legendary Phoolon Wali Holi at Banke Bihari. Absolute peak crowds; safety-first planning. Expect locked gates and massive surges. Book rooms about three months ahead. |
April | Papmochani: 2 Apr (Fri); Kamada: 17 Apr (Sat) | Moderate | Manageable crowd dynamics. The weekend Kamada date brings higher regional crowds from Delhi and the NCR. |
May | Varuthini: 2 May (Sun); Mohini: 16 May (Sun) | Low to moderate | Scorching summer heat thins the afternoon queues. Temples move to summer hours, with longer afternoon breaks. |
June | Apara: 1 Jun (Tue); Pandava Nirjala: 15 Jun (Tue); Yogini: 30 Jun (Wed) | High on Nirjala | Nirjala Ekadashi (15 June) is the most strictly observed fast; temples see heavy crowds for charnamrit and sweet-water distribution. Intense heat; carry water outside the temples. |
July | Devshayani: 14 Jul (Wed); Kamika: 30 Jul (Fri) | Moderate | The monsoon begins; Devshayani marks the onset of Chaturmas. The lanes get muddy and slippery; wear suitable footwear. |
August | Pavitropana: 12 Aug (Thu); Aja (Annada): 28 Aug (Sat) | High | Close to the Janmashtami season, with high pilgrim volumes on the parikrama routes. |
September | Parshva (Parivartini): 11 Sep (Sat); Indira: 26 Sep (Sun) | Moderate to high | Weekend slots amplify the footfall and the Radhashtami season in early-to-mid September keeps the spillover crowds high. |
October | Pashankusha: 11 Oct (Mon); Rama: 26 Oct (Tue) | High | The festival season begins. The Kartik month parikramas start, bringing large, steady devotee crowds to ISKCON, Radha Damodar and the parikrama. |
November | Devutthana: 10 Nov (Wed); Utpanna: 24 Nov (Wed) | VERY HIGH | Devutthana (Prabodhini) Ekadashi (10 November), when the Lord awakens, is highly auspicious and the Braj 84-kos parikrama season culminates around now. Severe traffic delays town-wide. |
December | Mokshada: 9 Dec (Thu); Saphala: 23 Dec (Thu) | Moderate | Early December is a sweet spot: pleasant weather with a noticeable dip in the daily crowd, before the New Year rush. |
The crowd levels are seasonal guides; the biggest single swing is still the day of the week. Your Vrindavan crowd strategy
Three simple rules let you read and beat, the crowd on any Ekadashi or festival day:
The Banke Bihari anchor. Banke Bihari sets the town's baseline; it is the most visited temple and on heavy days its gridlock spreads outward into the surrounding alleys. Judge the day by how busy Banke Bihari will be and plan your route around it, doing its darshan early and the quieter temples later.
Transit lockdowns. During peak seasons and on big festival days, private vehicles are banned inside the old city; e-rickshaws become your primary transport. Plan to park at an outer lot and take an e-rickshaw and walk in and allow extra time for it.
Midweek relief. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays remain significantly less packed than weekends. An Ekadashi that falls midweek is far easier than one on a Saturday or Sunday; where you have a choice of dates, choose a midweek one.
For getting around the car-free core on a busy day, see our how to commute in vrindavan guide.
The peak dates to plan around
A few dates in 2027 stand out as the heaviest of the year; plan well around them or come prepared for an intense, packed darshan:
Rangbhari (Amalaki) Ekadashi and Phoolon Wali Holi, about 18 to 20 March. The absolute peak. Rangbhari Ekadashi at Banke Bihari merges into the legendary Phoolon Wali Holi, the Holi of flowers, drawing enormous crowds; expect locked gates and massive human surges and plan with safety first. Book your room about three months ahead.
Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi, 15 June. The most strictly observed fast of the year, drawing heavy crowds for charnamrit and the free distribution of sweet water across the town, in intense summer heat; carry water and plan for the heat.
Devutthana (Prabodhini) Ekadashi, 10 November and the Kartik season. Among the most auspicious days, when the Braj 84-kos parikrama season culminates; the Kartik month (around late October to late November) is the busiest pilgrimage season of the year, with severe town-wide traffic. Beautiful, but plan carefully.
Away from these peaks, the midweek Ekadashis of February, early summer and early December are the calmest and most comfortable for a quiet, unhurried darshan.
What to expect on a Vrindavan Ekadashi
An Ekadashi in Vrindavan has its own rhythm, quite unlike an ordinary day:
The parikrama fills. The Vrindavan parikrama, the roughly 10 to 11 km circuit, fills with devotees walking and chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra, many barefoot, with kirtan parties, busiest from before dawn; on a big Ekadashi the numbers run to many thousands.
Longer temple lines. Banke Bihari, ISKCON, Radha Raman, Radha Damodar and Prem Mandir all run longer queues than usual, above all at the morning and evening darshan; arrive early and keep patience.
Falahari fasting food. Those who fast take only falahari, grain-free food: buckwheat (kuttu), water-chestnut flour, rock salt, potatoes, fruit and milk sweets; on Ekadashi the eateries and ashrams shift to these menus, so you can eat in keeping with the day.
The weekday decides the crush. An Ekadashi on a Saturday or Sunday or in a festival season, is far heavier than a midweek one; use the calendar above to see which weekday your Ekadashi falls on.
Pro-tips for visiting on festive days
Mind the slippery temple floors. The marble temple floors get heavily covered in spilt milk, water and trodden flowers and become very slick; walk carefully, in small steps and wear footwear that is easy to slip off and back on at the shoe stand.
Target the morning opening. The morning darshan windows open around 7:45 AM in summer or 8:45 AM in winter; queueing about thirty minutes before the doors open is the single best way to avoid the tight congestion that builds through the morning.
Check the dates close to your trip. Confirm the exact Ekadashi date, the Parana timing and any festival schedule on a reliable local platform such as Drik Panchang nearer your travel date, as the Vaishnava and Smarta dates can differ by a day and festival timings are set closer to the time.
Follow the crowd strategy. Do Banke Bihari early, plan for the vehicle ban and e-rickshaws and choose a midweek date where you can; pair a busy temple with a calmer one and keep the evening for the open Prem Mandir grounds.
Carry water and go light. Especially on the summer Ekadashis and the big fast days, carry water for outside the temples and keep your belongings zipped and minimal in the crowded lanes, with your glasses secured against the monkeys.
