Kartik Snan 2026: the dates and the dawn window
Kartik Snan 2026 runs from Sharad Purnima on Monday, 26 October 2026 to Kartik Purnima, Dev Diwali, on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, about thirty mornings. The bath is taken each day before sunrise, in the Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hour and a half, roughly 4:30 to 6:30 in the morning, though this shifts with your local sunrise. The final and greatest bath is on the dawn of Kartik Purnima, 24 November, the day of Dev Diwali. For the full month of Kartik in the land of Krishna, our kartik month vrindavan 2026 guide sets out every festival of the month; and to keep the Kartik snan and deep-daan on the Yamuna in Vrindavan, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan it.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Kartik is the dearest month of all in Braj, the Damodar month, when Krishna was bound by Yashoda's love. Through the whole month we rise before dawn and bathe in the Yamuna, cold and still and holy in the half-dark and every evening we offer deep-daan, little lamps set floating on her water, until the ghats are rivers of light. I keep it every year and I take my guests for it. There is no purer, more beautiful time to be in Vrindavan. Radhe Radhe, Jai Shri Damodar.
What is Kartik Snan?
Kartik Snan is the holy bath kept daily through the sacred month of Kartik:
The daily dawn bath. Kartik Snan is a bath taken each morning before sunrise, in the Brahma Muhurta, through the whole month of Kartik, from Sharad Purnima to Kartik Purnima; it is one of the most beloved and meritorious observances of the Hindu year, kept by countless devotees.
In a sacred river or at home. The bath is ideally taken in a sacred river, the Ganga, the Yamuna or the Narmada or in a holy pond, with the remembrance of the Lord; those who cannot reach a sacred river bathe at home in cold water, with the intention and a prayer, invoking the sacred rivers, which is held to carry the same grace.
A month of vrat and devotion. Many keep the whole month as a vrat, with the dawn bath, the worship of Vishnu as Damodar, the lighting of lamps, deep-daan, the care of the tulsi plant and simple, sattvic living; Kartik is held to be the most meritorious of months for such devotion.
The significance of Kartik Snan
The Kartik snan is held to carry the deepest spiritual merit, for several reasons:
The cleansing of sins. Bathing before sunrise in a sacred river during Kartik is believed to wash away past misdeeds and purify the soul; the scriptures praise the Kartik bath as among the most purifying of all observances, a cleansing of body, mind and heart.
Lord Vishnu's awakening. Kartik is dear to Lord Vishnu, who, in the month, wakes from his four-month cosmic sleep of Chaturmas, on Devuthani or Prabodhini Ekadashi; so the month is a time of renewed worship and auspicious beginnings and the Kartik vrat is offered to him, often as Damodar.
Lord Shiva's victory and Dev Diwali. Kartik Purnima, which closes the month, marks the day Lord Shiva, as Tripurari, destroyed the demon Tripurasura; in joy, the gods are said to have come down to bathe and light lamps and so the night is kept as Dev Diwali, the Diwali of the gods, when the ghats are lit with countless lamps.
Immense merit. Taking the holy dip through Kartik and above all on the final full moon, is said to yield immense spiritual grace, likened in the scriptures to the merit of great ancient sacrifices; few observances are held so dear or so rewarding.
Kartik Snan in Braj: the Yamuna, the Damodar month and deep-daan
Nowhere is Kartik and the Kartik snan, dearer than in Krishna's Braj:
The Damodar month. Kartik is the Damodar month, the dearest of the year in Braj, for it is the month of the Damodar leela, when the child Krishna was bound with a rope, dama, around his waist, udara, by his mother Yashoda's love; all Vrindavan sings the Damodarashtakam through the month in his adoration.
Snan in the Yamuna. In Vrindavan and Mathura, the Kartik snan is taken in the sacred Yamuna, beloved of Krishna, at her ghats, before dawn through the month; to bathe in the Yamuna in Kartik is held to be especially dear and pilgrims come from across the world for it.
Deep-daan on the Yamuna. Through Kartik, every evening, devotees offer deep-daan, the setting of little lamps afloat on the Yamuna and at the ghats and temples, until Vrindavan glows with light; the deep-daan of Kartik and the Radha Kund snan at the dark-fortnight midnight within it, are among the most beautiful devotions of Braj.

How to do Kartik Snan
The Kartik snan is kept simply and devoutly, wherever you are:
Rise before dawn. Rise in the Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hour and a half and take a holy dip in a sacred river or pond, the Ganga, the Yamuna or the Narmada; or, if you cannot, bathe at home in cold water, invoking the sacred rivers and the Lord with a prayer, which carries the same grace.
Worship Vishnu as Damodar and light lamps. After the bath, worship Lord Vishnu, often as Damodar, with a diya, tulsi and a simple offering; through Kartik, light lamps and offer deep-daan in the evening, by a river, at a temple or at home and care for the tulsi plant, dear to the Lord in this month.
Keep the month with devotion. Many keep the whole month as a vrat, with the daily bath, the Damodarashtakam, simple sattvic food, charity and the deep-daan; do as your faith and strength allow, for the intention and the devotion are the heart of the Kartik snan, within the dawn window.
Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali
The Kartik snan ends on its greatest day, Kartik Purnima, Tuesday, 24 November 2026, which is Dev Diwali, the Diwali of the gods. On this full-moon night, the gods are said to descend to bathe and the river ghats, above all at Varanasi on the Ganga and at Vrindavan and Mathura on the Yamuna, are lit with countless earthen lamps in a breathtaking offering of light; the final dawn bath of Kartik Purnima is held to carry the greatest merit of all. The same full moon is also Tripurari Purnima, Shiva's victory and Guru Nanak Jayanti, kept by the Sikhs, so it is a day of threefold holiness. The diwali 2026 in india earlier in the month and Dev Diwali at its close, together frame the festival of lights, with the month of Kartik between.
