Kartik Month in Vrindavan 2026: Dates, Deep Daan and How to Plan

If you ask me which month to come, I will say Kartik and then I will warn you about it in the same breath. It is the most beautiful month in Vrindavan. The weather turns kind, the ghats fill with lamps and the whole town sings the Damodarashtakam after dark. It is also the month when hotel rates double, when the lanes near Banke Bihari become impassable in the evening and when people who arrived without a plan spend their trip in queues.

Both things are true. This guide gives you the dates first, then the four nights that matter, then honest advice on how to be here without fighting the crowd the whole time. When is Kartik month in 2026?

Kartik month 2026 begins on Tuesday 27 October and ends on Tuesday 24 November. These are the North Indian dates, which is the calendar Braj follows.

One thing confuses people every year. The Kartik holy bath, the daily dip called Kartik snan, does not begin on the first day of the month. It begins on Sharad Purnima, the full moon before it, which in 2026 falls on Monday 26 October. It then runs all the way to Kartik Purnima on 24 November. So the vrat is thirty days, not twenty nine.

South India follows a different reckoning and observes the month later. If a relative in Hyderabad or Bengaluru tells you a different date, neither of you is wrong. Braj follows the dates above.

Kartik 2026 dates for Braj

The dates that fill Vrindavan. Temple timings are extended on several of these nights.

Between these dates there is Tulsi Vivah and the Ekadashi that ends Chaturmas and reopens the wedding season, which is why Vrindavan fills with wedding parties in the last week of the month. Expect louder evenings and fuller hotels after the twentieth.

Why is Kartik called Damodar month?

Because of one story and it is the tenderest story in the whole of Krishna’s childhood.

Yashoda catches the child Krishna stealing butter and decides to tie him to a grinding mortar. She brings a rope. It falls short by two fingers. She fetches another, ties them together and it is still short by two fingers. She keeps going until the whole house is knotted together and still it will not reach. Then, seeing her exhaustion and her love, Krishna allows himself to be bound.

Damodar means bound at the belly. The point of the story and the point of the whole month, is that the Lord who cannot be conquered by anything at all is conquered by a mother’s love. That is why the acts prescribed in Kartik are small ones. A lamp. A rope. A little butter.

You will hear the Damodarashtakam sung every evening through the month, most famously at ISKCON Krishna Balaram Mandir, where hundreds of devotees hold lamps and sing it together.

What is deep daan and where do you do it?

Deep daan is the offering of a lamp and it is the signature act of Kartik. The Padma Purana holds that even a single lamp offered in this month pleases Krishna, which is the whole theology of Kartik in one line: the size of the offering does not matter.

In practice, a lamp is lit at dusk and offered at a temple, at a tulsi plant, or floated at the Yamuna. Families do it every evening for the full month. Visitors usually do it once or twice and remember it for years.

Where to do it in Vrindavan:

At the Yamuna ghats, above all at Keshi Ghat, where the evening aarti draws a crowd every night of the year and a very large one in Kartik. At any temple you are already visiting, since almost all of them accept lamps through the month. And in front of a tulsi plant, which is the quiet version and the one most Brajwasi households actually do.

Buy your diyas in the lane rather than at the ghat itself. The price difference is small but the queue is not.

Radha Kund Snan, 1 November 2026

This is the single most intense night of Kartik in Braj and it happens at midnight on Sunday 1 November 2026.

Radha Kund sits near Govardhan, about 26 km from Vrindavan. On this one night, thousands of couples come to bathe in the kund at midnight. The belief is that a dip here on this night, on Kartik Krishna Ashtami, blesses childless couples with a child. Couples offer a petha, the white pumpkin, wrapped in red cloth. Many return years later in gratitude.

It is worth being honest about what the night is like. The kund is small, the crowd is very large and the bathing continues from midnight until morning. It is moving and it is uncomfortable. Elderly visitors and small children are better off visiting Radha Kund in daylight on another day, when it is one of the most peaceful places in Braj.

Govardhan Puja and Annakut, 10 November 2026

Govardhan Puja falls on Tuesday 10 November 2026 and in Braj it is bigger than Diwali.

Elsewhere in India, Govardhan Puja is a domestic ritual. Here it is the home fixture. This is the hill Krishna lifted and these are the villages he lifted it for. Temples across Braj prepare the Annakut, the mountain of food and the Chhappan Bhog of fifty six dishes is offered.

The most auspicious morning window that day runs from about 6:40 AM to 8:50 AM, so the parikrama and the darshan both start very early.

Two things fill up on this date. The 21 km Govardhan Parikrama sees enormous numbers and every vehicle in Braj is booked. If you want to walk the parikrama on Govardhan Puja itself, arrange your transport weeks ahead, not days.

Dev Diwali and Kartik Purnima, 24 November 2026

Kartik Purnima falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026 and closes the month. It is also called Dev Diwali, the Diwali of the gods.

This is the last day of Kartik snan and the last night of deep daan, so the ghats carry more lamps than on any other evening of the year. Those who have kept the month long vrat break it here. If you can only come for one night of Kartik, this is a strong choice and it is a calmer crowd than Radha Kund Snan.

What is Vrindavan actually like during Kartik?

Good and difficult, in equal measure. Here is the honest comparison.

One practical warning that costs people half a day. Even in Kartik, the major temples still close for several hours in the afternoon. Extended hours mean the evening runs later, not that the gates stay open at two in the afternoon. Check the Mathura Vrindavan temple timings before you build your day.

How many days do you need?

Three nights is the honest minimum for Kartik and four is better.

One night lets you see Vrindavan in the evening and do deep daan at a ghat. Two nights adds Mathura and Govardhan. Three nights lets you walk the parikrama without rushing and still keep an unhurried morning at Banke Bihari. Four nights adds Barsana and Nandgaon, which is where Kartik feels least crowded and most like itself.

When should you book?

For the peak dates, book eight to ten weeks ahead. That means booking in August or early September for a November trip.

Rooms near Banke Bihari and near Govardhan go first and they go at Kartik rates. Ashrams and dharamshalas fill even earlier, because month long vrat keepers take rooms for the whole of Kartik rather than for a weekend. If your dates are flexible, the quietest stretch of Kartik is the middle: roughly 12 to 20 November, after Govardhan Puja and before the Purnima rush.

What to carry and what to wear

•           Warm layers for early mornings and late evenings, since Kartik nights turn cold

•           Comfortable footwear you can remove quickly and often

•           Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees

•           Small cash notes for diyas, prasad and offerings

•           A torch, because ghat steps after dark are uneven

•           A cloth bag rather than a backpack, for the temple queues

The honest bit

Honest words about Kartik. This is the most expensive month to visit Vrindavan and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a room. Rates rise, vehicles are scarce and the peak dates are genuinely difficult to move around on.

The Yamuna is revered and it is also polluted. Deep daan at the ghat is beautiful. A full immersion bath is a decision to make with your eyes open. Kartik snan is traditionally a river bath and many pilgrims now take it as a symbolic sprinkling instead. Nobody in Braj will think less of you for it.

Radha Kund Snan at midnight is not an experience to bring elderly parents or small children to. Come in daylight on another day instead and you will see the place properly.

And the afternoon closures do not lift for Kartik. That single misunderstanding costs more visitors more hours than anything else on this list.
