Yamuna Jayanti in Braj

For us in Braj, the Yamuna is not a river, she is Yamuna Maharani, our mother and Krishna’s own queen, so Yamuna Jayanti is a day close to every Brajwasi’s heart. Before dawn the ghats fill with devotees for the holy dip, there is the Yamunashtakam being sung, the lamps and then that breathtaking Chunari Manoratha, when a huge red chunari of many sarees is floated right across the water from bank to bank. It moves me every year. My honest advice is the same as for any dawn river festival: come early, mind the wet steps, stay in safe shallow water and let me handle the timing and the crowds so you can simply be present. What Yamuna Jayanti is
Yamuna Jayanti, also called Yamuna Chhath, celebrates the appearance or descent to Earth, of the Goddess Yamuna, worshipped across Braj as Yamuna Maharani, the living mother-river of the region. For devotees here the Yamuna is not merely a river but a celestial goddess, the beloved of Krishna and the giver of purification and grace, so her appearance day is a major and tender festival.
The celebration centres on the river itself. Devotees take a holy dip, offer prayers and aarti to the goddess, sing her praises and perform a set of cherished rituals along the ghats, from the pre-dawn bath to the twilight prayers and the floating of lamps. Because Braj is the land of the Yamuna’s most sacred stretch and because she is Krishna’s own queen, the festival is felt most intensely here, at the great ghats of Mathura and Vrindavan. It is at once an act of devotion to the goddess, a prayer for purification and a joyful, visually spectacular riverside occasion, crowned by the famous Chunari Manoratha.
The 2027 date and timings
In 2027, Yamuna Jayanti is celebrated on Monday 12 April. The tithi is Shashthi and by the panchang the Shashthi tithi begins at about 09:39 PM on 11 April 2027 and ends at about 07:34 PM on 12 April 2027, which is why the festival falls on the 12th.
The main ritual timings follow the rhythm of a river festival. Devotees wake before dawn for the pre-dawn spiritual bath in the Brahma Muhurat, the sacred early-morning window and perform prayers again at the designated twilight hour around sunset. The pre-dawn bath and the sunset prayers are the two devotional peaks of the day. Because the festival follows the Hindu lunar calendar, the date and the precise tithi timings are set by the panchang and can vary slightly between calendars, so treat 12 April 2027 and the timings here as expected and reconfirm nearer the time. Given the pre-dawn start, plan your rest and transport the night before so you can reach the ghat comfortably in the early hours.
Who Goddess Yamuna is: the Puranic origins
Understanding who the Yamuna is, in the tradition, deepens the whole festival. According to ancient scriptures such as the Vamana Purana and the Bhagavata Purana, the Goddess Yamuna is a living, celestial deity who descended from the heavens to serve and purify humanity. By this tradition, she is the daughter of Surya Dev (the sun god) and the goddess Sanjna and the twin sister of Yamaraja, the god of death, a relationship that gives the festival its special power over the fear of death. And in Braj above all, she is revered as the eternal consort and queen of Lord Krishna, in her form as Kalindi.
These relationships are the heart of her worship. As Krishna’s queen, she is inseparable from the whole devotional world of Braj; as Surya’s daughter and Yama’s sister, her waters are believed to carry a unique grace. These are devotional and scriptural traditions, held dear by the faithful and they are why the Yamuna is worshipped here not as a body of water but as a mother and a goddess, Yamuna Maharani, whose appearance day is celebrated with such love.
Where Yamuna Jayanti is celebrated in Braj
While Yamuna Jayanti is observed wherever the river flows, its heart rests entirely in Braj and two ghats in particular are the great centres of the festival.
Vishram Ghat, Mathura
vishram ghat is the primary historical site of the festival in Mathura, where the mass aartis and the major structural rituals take place. The principal and most sacred of Mathura’s ghats, it is the natural centre of the city’s Yamuna worship and on Yamuna Jayanti it draws great crowds for the collective aarti and the day’s ceremonies. The grand Chunari Manoratha is a highlight here.
Keshi Ghat, Vrindavan
keshi ghat is Vrindavan’s most beautiful and revered riverfront ghat, famous for its grand congregational prayers, kirtans and spectacular riverside visual displays on the festival. With its striking architecture rising from the water, it is one of the most atmospheric places to experience Yamuna Jayanti, especially for the evening aarti and the devotional singing.
Both ghats are part of the wider network of yamuna ghats and leela sites along the river and many smaller ghats hold their own observances too. A lovely plan is to choose one ghat as your base for the day’s key rituals, Vishram Ghat for the grand Mathura ceremonies or Keshi Ghat for Vrindavan’s riverside beauty, rather than trying to be everywhere. The two towns are about an hour apart; see our mathura to vrindavan distance guide.
The key rituals
Several beautiful and distinctive rituals make up Yamuna Jayanti.
The holy dip and its purification. The central act is a holy dip in the Yamuna, especially in the pre-dawn Brahma Muhurat. Because Yamuna is Yama’s sister, the Puranas hold that bathing in her waters on this day frees a devotee from the fear of death and softens Yamaraja’s final judgment and that it carries manifold spiritual purification compared with an ordinary holy bath. This is the devotional heart of the day. (Take care on the wet steps and in the water, see the planning section.)
The Chunari Manoratha. The day’s most spectacular ritual and one of the great sights of Braj. Dozens of sarees are stitched together to form a single, massive, continuous cloth and devotees ride out in boats to ceremonially drape this giant red chunari right across the span of the river, from one bank to the other, offering it to Yamuna Maharani as a mother is draped in a sari. It is breathtaking to witness.
The 24-hour fast and worship. Devout observers keep a strict fast, often for 24 hours, in honour of the goddess.
Deep Daan. Lamps are floated on the river, the water glowing with countless flames, especially around the twilight aarti.
Yamunashtakam and the shringar of the goddess. Devotees chant the Yamunashtakam, the famous hymn to the Yamuna composed by Shri Vallabhacharya and the riverbank deities and the goddess are dressed with red chunari, bangles and offered special sweets (naivedyam), honouring her as the queen and mother she is.
These are devotional traditions and beliefs cherished by the faithful and together they make the day both profound and beautiful.
Practical planning and safety
Yamuna Jayanti centres on a pre-dawn river bath in large crowds, so a little planning and care make all the difference.
Come early and plan the pre-dawn logistics. With the key bath in the Brahma Muhurat before dawn, plan your stay and transport the night before so you can reach your chosen ghat in the early hours, ahead of the biggest crowds.
Mind the steps and the water. The ghat steps are often wet and can be slippery, especially in the dark, so step carefully, hold the railings and each other, keep children and elders close and do not venture into deep or fast-moving water. Bathe only where it is shallow and safe and follow the local authorities and boatmen. During the Chunari Manoratha, keep clear of the boat operations and watch from a safe spot.
April weather. Mid-April days in Braj are hot, though the pre-dawn is cooler, so carry water, sun protection for later in the day, a change of clothes and a towel and dress modestly for bathing in a sacred, public setting.
Crowds and valuables. The ghats are very busy, so carry minimal valuables, keep them dry and secure, agree a meeting point with your group and be patient in the crush.
It is free. Bathing, darshan and the aartis are free, so be cautious of anyone demanding payment for “access” to the ghat or the bath.
For the ghats’ general schedules and the best aartis see our vishram ghat and must attend aarti guides, for arrival see how to reach vrindavan and for a base see where to stay in vrindavan. Confirm the date and timings nearer the time.
Planning your Yamuna Jayanti visit and how a Brajwasi can help
Yamuna Jayanti rewards planning because of its pre-dawn start, its large crowds and its two great centres in Mathura and Vrindavan. Confirm the live date (12 April 2027) and the bathing and aarti timings nearer the event, choose whether to base your day at Vishram Ghat or Keshi Ghat, arrange a stay and transport that let you reach the ghat before dawn, plan around the pre-dawn bath, the Chunari Manoratha and the twilight aarti and prepare for the river and the April heat. Many visitors pair the festival with darshan at the nearby temples.
Let a Brajwasi plan the day for you
A pre-dawn river festival across two towns, with the great Chunari Manoratha and big crowds, is exactly where local help counts. As Brajwasis, we can confirm the live date and timings, help you choose and reach the right ghat before dawn, arrange a well-placed stay and transport, guide you safely through the crowded steps and the sequence of the bath, the Chunari Manoratha and the aarti, point you to the best spot for the Deep Daan and keep you clear of touts, so your focus stays on Yamuna Maharani. A shared Mathura and Vrindavan darshan starts from around 1499 rupees per person; see our mathura vrindavan tour or we design a private visit around Yamuna Jayanti.
