Chandigarh and Vrindavan: an overview
Chandigarh, the well-planned City Beautiful and gateway to Punjab and the Himalayan foothills and Vrindavan, the town of Krishna on the Yamuna, are joined by a good day's drive of about 411 to 454 km, roughly 6 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours, much of it on fast expressway. The clever part of the journey is getting around Delhi, which lies between the two; the quickest routes use the Western Peripheral Expressway or the Yamuna Expressway to skirt the capital's traffic. This guide gives every route in both directions with its distance and time, all the ways to travel, how to bypass Delhi and what awaits you in Vrindavan; and if you would like it all arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour package with Experience My India can meet you and guide your Braj days.
From the ground (Gurudutt): For my guests driving down from Chandigarh and Punjab, the one thing I always stress is to plan the Delhi crossing: take the Western Peripheral Expressway or the Yamuna Expressway rather than pushing through the city and you will save yourself hours and a headache. Start early, keep a rest and meal stop near the Delhi ring and you will reach Vrindavan by afternoon with the evening free for Banke Bihari and the Prem Mandir lights. Radhe Radhe. Chandigarh to Vrindavan distance: the routes
There are three main road routes from Chandigarh to Vrindavan; here they are side by side:
Route | Distance | Driving time | Via |
Fastest | 429 km | About 6 hr 29 min | Western Peripheral Expressway |
Shortest | 411 km | About 6 hr 47 min | NH 44 and Yamuna Expressway |
Alternative | 454 km | About 6 hr 56 min | NH 344G |
In short: the quickest way from Chandigarh to Vrindavan is the 429 km route via the Western Peripheral Expressway, about 6 hours 29 minutes, which skirts Delhi; the shortest in distance is the 411 km route via NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway, about 6 hours 47 minutes; and a third route via NH 344G is a little longer at 454 km and about 6 hours 56 minutes.
Vrindavan to Chandigarh distance: the routes
Going back, the routes and times are much the same; the main options are these:
Route | Distance | Driving time | Via |
Fastest | 410 km | About 6 hr 48 min | Yamuna Expressway and NH 44 |
Alternative | 426 km | About 6 hr 50 min | Western Peripheral Expressway |
Slower | 420 km | About 8 hr 28 min | NH 44 |
In short: from Vrindavan the quickest way back to Chandigarh is the 410 km route via the Yamuna Expressway and NH 44, about 6 hours 48 minutes; the Western Peripheral Expressway route is 426 km and about 6 hours 50 minutes, while the plain NH 44 route through the Delhi region is slower at about 8 hours 28 minutes. Once again, the expressways are the sensible choice.
Which route should you choose?
For the quickest drive to Vrindavan: the Western Peripheral Expressway. Coming to Vrindavan, the 429 km route via the Western Peripheral Expressway is the fastest, about 6 hours 29 minutes, because it lets you bypass the centre of Delhi rather than crawling through it.
For the shortest distance: NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway. The 411 km route via NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway is the shortest, about 6 hours 47 minutes and going back the Yamuna Expressway with NH 44 is the quickest at about 6 hours 48 minutes.
Best avoided: the plain NH 44 route. Pushing through on NH 44 without the peripheral expressway is much slower, about 8 hours 28 minutes going back, because of the Delhi traffic; choose it only if the expressways are closed.
Check live traffic on the day, since conditions around Delhi decide more than anything which route is quickest; a driver who knows the roads will pick the best one.
How to travel between Chandigarh and Vrindavan
There are several ways to make the journey; the options at a glance:
By car or taxi (best). The most comfortable and flexible way, about 6 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours by one of the expressway routes, door to door, with rest stops of your choosing; ideal for families, elders and pilgrims with luggage and easily arranged as part of a Braj tour.
By train. Trains connect Chandigarh to Mathura Junction, some direct and some via Delhi; from Mathura, Vrindavan is about 15 km by road. Check the current timetable and book ahead, especially in the festival seasons.
By bus. Buses run from Chandigarh towards Delhi and on to Mathura, from where you take a local ride to Vrindavan; it is the budget option, though slower and with changes.
By air. There is no direct flight for so short a hop; Chandigarh has an airport and the nearest airport to Vrindavan is Delhi, so you would fly to Delhi and continue by road. For most, the road or an overnight train is simpler.
If you are coming by rail, our tundla to vrindavan distance guide covers the nearby railheads and the last leg into Vrindavan and our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers getting around once you arrive.
Bypassing Delhi: the Western Peripheral Expressway
The single biggest factor in this journey is how you cross the Delhi region and the expressways are the answer; a few points to know:
The Western Peripheral Expressway. Also known as the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal or KMP, Expressway, this ring road runs to the west of Delhi and lets traffic from the Chandigarh side bypass the city, which is why the fastest route to Vrindavan uses it.
The Yamuna Expressway. The smooth, fast expressway from the Greater Noida side down to the Mathura and Agra region; the shortest routes join it for the final stretch into Braj.
Avoid crawling through Delhi. Driving straight through the heart of Delhi on the old highway can add hours, as the slower NH 44 return time shows; the peripheral expressway is well worth the small extra distance.
Carry cash or a FASTag for the tolls and check the current route on the day, as the expressway links around Delhi continue to be improved.
What to see when you arrive in Vrindavan
Vrindavan rewards even a single evening; the essentials to see when you arrive:
