Delhi Airport to Vrindavan: Cab, Train and Bus Options
By Gurudutt, Experience My India·2 November 2026

Quick Answer
Quick Enquiry
This is one of the most common questions my guests ask, how to get from the Delhi airport to Vrindavan and the honest answer is: it depends on your luggage, your budget and your group. If you have landed after a long flight, with bags and family, a direct pre-booked cab is worth every rupee, you get in and we bring you straight to your hotel in a couple of hours. If you are travelling light and want to save, the train to Mathura and a quick auto into Vrindavan is fast and cheap. The bus is the budget route, just know that most buses leave you at Chhatikara, not in the town. Whatever you choose, book your onward transfer in advance so you are not negotiating with touts at midnight. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Packages or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
The journey at a glance
Vrindavan sits roughly 140 to 160 km south of Delhi airport, an easy half-day journey that most visitors complete in well under four hours. The right way to travel comes down to a simple trade-off between comfort, cost and how many transfers you are willing to make with your luggage.
In short: a direct cab is the most seamless and the one most arriving visitors choose, especially with bags or family; the train is the most economical and often the fastest for the main Delhi-to-Mathura leg, but involves changes at either end; and the bus is the cheapest, with the catch that it usually drops you on the highway near Vrindavan rather than in the town. The sections below walk through each in detail, with routes, times and indicative costs, followed by a comparison to help you choose. For the wider picture of reaching Braj, see our how to reach vrindavan and delhi to vrindavan guides.
Option 1: Direct cab (most convenient)
Taking a direct taxi is the fastest and most seamless way to reach Vrindavan from Delhi airport, since it avoids any station transfers with heavy luggage and brings you straight to your hotel or temple.
Travel time: around 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic and the route.
The routes: cabs typically take either NH 44 (passing through the Faridabad and Palwal side) or cross over to the Yamuna Expressway via Greater Noida. The Yamuna Expressway is smooth and fast; NH 44 can be busier. The exact distance is around 140 to 160 km depending on the route chosen.
Indicative fares: roughly 2,500 to 4,500 rupees for a one-way trip, depending on the vehicle type (hatchback, sedan or SUV) and whether airport parking and highway tolls are included. These are indicative and vary with demand, time of day and operator, so confirm the all-inclusive fare before you set off.
How to book: you can pre-book a car with a travel operator (the most reliable option, as your driver meets you at arrivals), hire an airport-authorised prepaid taxi from the official counter at the arrival terminal or use an app-based intercity ride. Pre-booking is strongly recommended if you are arriving late at night or with family, so you are not negotiating on the spot.
A direct cab is the recommended choice for comfort, for families, for anyone with luggage and for late-night arrivals. We can arrange a pre-booked airport transfer so a driver is waiting for you when you land; see the planning section.
Option 2: Train via Mathura Junction (cost-effective and fast)
Vrindavan itself has only a small rail footprint, so the practical approach is to take a mainline train from Delhi to Mathura Junction (station code MTJ), which sits about 12 to 15 km from Vrindavan and then a short local ride in. It is often the most economical and fastest way to cover the main distance. It works in three steps.
Step 1, airport to the railway station: from Terminal 3, take the Delhi Metro Airport Express line straight to New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS). From Terminal 1, you can use the Magenta line (for example to connect towards the network), then reach your departure station. Allow time for the metro and the transfer.
Step 2, Delhi to Mathura: board a southbound mainline train. Many daily trains run from New Delhi (NDLS) or Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) towards Mathura and fast services (such as Shatabdi-class and other express trains) take only about 1.5 to 2 hours. Indicative fares range from around 70 rupees to 400-plus rupees depending on the class (general, sleeper or AC). Book through IRCTC and check current train numbers, timings and availability there, as services and schedules change.
Step 3, Mathura to Vrindavan: outside Mathura Junction, shared e-rickshaws, autos and local cabs are readily available and will drop you at your temple or hotel in Vrindavan in about 20 to 30 minutes. See our mathura to vrindavan distance guide.
The train is ideal if you are travelling light, want to save money or like rail travel and our delhi to mathura trains guide has more on the options.
Option 3: Bus (budget-friendly)
If you prefer a highway bus, several luxury and state-run operators serve this route daily and it is the most budget-friendly choice, with one important catch about where you are dropped.
Direct airport-area buses: some premium operators run select morning AC sleeper or luxury coaches from the airport vicinity, with indicative fares around 800 to 900 rupees. Availability is limited and schedules change, so check in advance.
Via a city bus terminal: for far wider schedules, use the Delhi Metro to reach a major hub such as ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Anand Vihar or Sarai Kale Khan and from there take a UPSRTC state bus or a private coach (operators such as NueGo or Zingbus run frequent services) towards Mathura or Vrindavan.
Travel time and cost: roughly 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic, with basic seating tickets starting around 250 to 500 rupees. You can check timetables and book on aggregators such as redBus or MakeMyTrip.
Drop-point caution (important): most long-distance buses do not enter Vrindavan town, to avoid the congestion and instead drop passengers at the Chhatikara flyover or the “Vrindavan Cut” on the Yamuna Expressway. From there you take a quick local auto (about 10 minutes) into the main temple districts. See our chhatikara road guide and factor this last leg into your time and budget.
The bus suits budget travellers who do not mind the extra transfer and the highway drop-off; just be ready for the final auto ride into town.
Which option is right for you
Here is a quick comparison to help you choose. All times and fares are indicative and change with traffic, season and demand.
Option | Travel time | Indicative cost | Best for |
Direct cab | About 2.5 to 3.5 hours | About 2,500 to 4,500 rupees (whole car, one way) | Comfort, families, luggage, late arrivals, door-to-door |
Train (via Mathura) | About 1.5 to 2 hours main leg, plus transfers | About 70 to 400-plus rupees per person (plus metro and local ride) | Budget, light luggage, solo or couples, rail lovers |
Bus | About 3 to 4 hours | About 250 to 900 rupees per person | Tightest budgets, flexible travellers who do not mind the Chhatikara drop |
In short: choose the cab for comfort and the least hassle, especially with family or bags or a night landing; choose the train to balance speed and savings if you travel light; and choose the bus for the lowest fare if you do not mind the transfers and the highway drop-off. Many first-time visitors and most families, find the direct cab well worth it after a flight.
Practical tips for the journey
A few practical points make the trip smoother whichever way you travel.
Book your onward transfer in advance. Whether a cab or a train-plus-auto plan, arrange it before you land, especially for late-night or early-morning arrivals, so you are not negotiating with touts at the airport or station. Agree the full fare in advance.
Mind the last leg. By train you will transfer at Mathura (about 20 to 30 minutes into Vrindavan); by bus you will likely be dropped at Chhatikara or the Vrindavan Cut and take a short auto in. Factor this time and small extra cost into your plan.
Avoid touts and agree fares upfront. At the airport, station and bus drop-points, use official prepaid counters or pre-booked transport and always fix the price before you get in. Be wary of anyone offering suspiciously cheap “direct” deals.
Time your travel. Delhi traffic is heavy in the morning and evening peaks, which can add an hour, so an off-peak departure is faster. The Yamuna Expressway route is generally smooth.
Luggage and comfort. With heavy bags, the cab is far easier than the metro-train-auto chain. If you take the train, travel light, as you will change modes two or three times.
Know your destination. Have your Vrindavan hotel or temple name and address ready for the driver or auto; the town’s lanes are narrow, so you may be dropped a short walk from a temple. See where to stay in vrindavan and places to visit in vrindavan.
Planning your transfer and how a Brajwasi can help
The smoothest arrivals are the planned ones: decide your mode (cab for comfort, train for value, bus for budget), book your onward transport before you land, confirm the all-inclusive fare and factor in the last leg (the Mathura transfer or the Chhatikara drop). For families, night arrivals or anyone with luggage, a pre-booked door-to-door cab is almost always worth it. Many visitors also like to start their Braj itinerary straight from the airport, going directly into a Vrindavan darshan.
Let a Brajwasi handle your airport transfer
Arriving after a long flight is exactly when a reliable, pre-arranged transfer matters most. As Brajwasis, we can arrange a pre-booked cab so a driver meets you at Delhi airport arrivals and brings you straight to your Vrindavan hotel or temple, with a fixed, all-inclusive fare and no tout haggling or advise and set up the train-plus-local-ride plan if you prefer. We can also begin your darshan directly from the airport. A shared Vrindavan darshan starts from around 1499 rupees per person; see our vrindavan tour package or we design a private transfer and visit.
