Dwarka to Vrindavan distance: an overview
The Dwarka to Vrindavan distance is about 1,383 km by road on the fastest route, via NE 4, a journey of roughly 22 hours 22 minutes, with other routes running via NH 47 and NE 4, about 1,389 km and around 26 hours and via NH 27, about 1,391 km and around 22 hours 49 minutes. Vrindavan, the beloved town of Krishna's childhood pastimes in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, lies just beyond Mathura, while Dwarka, on the far western coast of Gujarat, is the city where Krishna reigned as king, so the two are among the holiest cities of the whole life of Krishna.
This guide covers the Dwarka to Vrindavan distance and the best ways to make the trip in full: the road routes both ways, with their distances and times; the train, which has no direct service and needs a change; the flight, by way of a Gujarat airport and Delhi; the parallel Dwarka to Mathura distance; and what to see when you arrive, along with the great Krishna pilgrimage circuit and how to plan. Our how to reach vrindavan guide covers arriving in the region in more detail.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Dwarka to Vrindavan is one of the great Krishna pilgrimages, from the Lord's ocean kingdom in the west to the land of his childhood in Braj and it is a long haul of well over a thousand kilometres, so plan it as a journey, not a dash. The simplest option is a car on the NE 4 route, about twenty-two hours, broken with an overnight halt and Rajasthan gives you lovely places to stop, Udaipur, Ajmer, Pushkar. The train is restful but there is no direct service, so you will change, usually via Ahmedabad or Delhi. Flying saves less than you would think, since Dwarka has no airport and the flights to Delhi mostly connect. Whatever you choose, give yourself time in Braj at the end and do take darshan at Mathura's own Dwarkadhish temple, a lovely echo of the city you came from. Darshan is free. By road (fastest) | About 1,383 km via NE 4, roughly 22 hr 22 min |
By road (alternatives) | About 1,389 km via NH 47 and NE 4 (26 hr); about 1,391 km via NH 27 (22 hr 49 min) |

Mathura to Vrindavan | About 12 to 15 km, 20 to 30 minutes by road |
Darshan | Free |
In one line: Dwarka to Vrindavan is about 1,383 km and 22 to 23 hours by road via NE 4, with no direct train and no airport at Dwarka, so the road is often the most practical way.
Dwarka to Vrindavan by road
By road, there are three common routes from Dwarka to Vrindavan, crossing Gujarat and Rajasthan, differing in distance and time.
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via NE 4 (fastest) | About 1,383 km | About 22 hr 22 min |
Via NH 47 and NE 4 | About 1,389 km | About 26 hr |
Via NH 27 | About 1,391 km | About 22 hr 49 min |
The NE 4 route is the fastest, running north-east from Dwarka across Gujarat and Rajasthan toward the Agra and Braj region, with Vrindavan just beyond Mathura. The whole drive is close to a full day, so plan meal and rest stops, share the driving and prefer daylight; many travellers split the journey with an overnight halt, often at Ahmedabad, Udaipur or Ajmer and some add Pushkar or, near the end, Agra for the Taj Mahal. So the road distance is about 1,383 to 1,391 km depending on the route. So drive with rest and care over this long distance or consider the train or a connecting flight to arrive fresh in Vrindavan.
Vrindavan to Dwarka by road
The return, from Vrindavan to Dwarka, runs on slightly different routes, so the distances differ a little.
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via Udaipur to Ahmedabad Hwy (shortest) | About 1,371 km | About 23 hr 18 min |
Via NE 4 | About 1,398 km | About 23 hr 20 min |
Via NH 754A | About 1,471 km | About 28 hr |
So from Vrindavan to Dwarka the shortest route is via the Udaipur to Ahmedabad Highway, about 1,371 km and roughly 23 hours 18 minutes, with the NE 4 route similar in time at about 1,398 km and the NH 754A route longer at about 1,471 km. So the Udaipur to Ahmedabad Highway route is the shortest that way. So the drive is about a day either direction. So plan the Udaipur to Ahmedabad route for the shortest drive from Vrindavan back to Dwarka.
Dwarka to Vrindavan by train
There is no direct train from Dwarka to Vrindavan or even to Mathura, so by train you travel with a change, often at Ahmedabad, Delhi or Agra and reach Mathura Junction (station code MTJ), the nearest major railhead, about 12 to 15 km from Vrindavan, before the short road hop. Dwarka has its own station (DWK) on the Ahmedabad to Okha line, from which you connect toward the north. The whole journey with a change takes roughly 22 to 31 hours and fares vary by class, route and date, roughly from around 600 to 1,100 rupees in sleeper class to several thousand in the higher AC classes across the legs. So the rail route needs a change and careful planning. From Mathura Junction, a taxi or auto covers the short distance to Vrindavan; our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers getting around Braj.
So the train is restful but has no direct service, so allow for a change and confirm the connections when you book. So book the legs with a comfortable gap. So arrive at Mathura Junction and take the short road hop to Vrindavan.
Dwarka to Vrindavan by flight
Neither Dwarka nor Vrindavan has an airport, so flying is a multi-leg journey: drive to a Gujarat airport such as Jamnagar (about 130 km from Dwarka), Porbandar (about 95 to 100 km), Rajkot or the major hub Ahmedabad; fly to Delhi, mostly with a connection via Mumbai or Ahmedabad; and then drive about 150 to 180 km from Delhi to Vrindavan along the Yamuna Expressway, roughly 3 to 4 hours. Because of the drives at each end and the connecting flight, the total is often close to the road or train time, so flying saves less than on a direct route, though it may be more comfortable. So fly via a Gujarat airport and Delhi if you prefer comfort. So it is a multi-leg option. Our best time to visit vrindavan mathura guide helps you choose your dates.
Dwarka to Mathura distance
Since Mathura lies just before Vrindavan and the two are visited together, the Dwarka to Mathura distance is almost the same, a little shorter, on the same routes.
Dwarka to Mathura is roughly 1,370 km by road, just a little less than to Vrindavan, since Vrindavan sits about 12 to 15 km beyond Mathura; the same NE 4 and Gujarat to Rajasthan routes serve both, in about 22 hours. By train, you arrive at Mathura Junction with a change; by air, you reach Mathura the same way as Vrindavan, via a Gujarat airport and Delhi. So reaching Mathura means reaching Vrindavan, close by. So plan Mathura and Vrindavan as one trip, seeing the birthplace of Krishna at the krishna janmabhoomi temple and, fittingly for a Dwarka pilgrim, the dwarkadhish temple mathura, the temple of the Lord of Dwarka in Mathura.
What to see in Vrindavan and Mathura
Once you arrive, Vrindavan and Mathura hold a wealth of temples and sacred sites. In Vrindavan, the beloved banke bihari temple is the lively heart of darshan, along with the grand prem mandir vrindavan, the ISKCON temple and the ancient Goswami temples; in Mathura, the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace, is the chief site, with its own Dwarkadhish temple and the Yamuna ghats. For priority darshan at the busiest shrine, see our banke bihari vip darshan page and check the mathura vrindavan temple timings before you set out, as the temples close for a while through the middle of the day.
From Vrindavan you can easily add Govardhan, the sacred hill and Barsana and Nandgaon in the western Braj, for a fuller pilgrimage; and, for a pilgrim from Dwarka, the whole trip completes the great Krishna circuit, from his kingdom by the sea to the land of his birth and childhood. So plan by how many days you have. So combine Vrindavan and Mathura with the wider Braj on your trip from Dwarka.
Tips, best time and how to plan
The best time to travel from Dwarka to Vrindavan is the cool season, roughly October to March, when the weather across Gujarat, Rajasthan and Braj is pleasant; the summers are very hot and the monsoon can slow the roads and the festivals of Holi, Janmashtami and Radhashtami in Braj are vibrant but very crowded. Given the long journey, allow at least four to five days in all and consider breaking the road trip at Udaipur, Ajmer or Pushkar.
