Govardhan in Mathura: an overview
Ask in Mathura where Krishna's childhood truly comes alive and many will point west, to Govardhan: a small town and a long, low, sacred hill about 23 km from the city, in the same Mathura district, revered as the Giriraj that the child Krishna lifted on his little finger to shelter all of Braj. It is one of the holiest pilgrimages of the land of Krishna and yet it is easily reached from Mathura on a day trip, which we can arrange as part of a mathura vrindavan tour package. Our govardhan hill page covers the sacred Giriraj itself in depth.
This guide is your orientation to Govardhan from Mathura: where it is and how to reach it, the story of the lifted hill, what there is to see, the 21 km parikrama and the festivals and the best time to visit and how to plan. For the shrines in detail, see our govardhan temples guide; for the town itself, our govardhan up guide.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Govardhan is close enough to Mathura that people sometimes treat it as a quick tick on the list, but I always tell my guests to give it real time. It is not a hill you climb for a view; it is a hill you walk around, barefoot if you can and the feeling of the parikrama is quite unlike anything in the city temples. If you only have a morning, come from Mathura early, take darshan at Daan Ghati, bow to Giriraj and see Kusum Sarovar. If you have a full day, do the whole 21 km circuit. The road from Mathura is easy, about an hour and any taxi or auto will bring you. Darshan is free everywhere. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
Where is Govardhan and how to reach it from Mathura
Govardhan is a town and tehsil in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, about 23 km west of Mathura city, on the road towards Deeg; the sacred Giriraj hill has an average elevation of about 179 m and stretches along the town. Reaching it from Mathura is simple:
By road: about 23 km, roughly an hour from Mathura by taxi, auto or bus, on the Mathura to Deeg road; this is the easiest way.
By train: the nearest major railhead is Mathura Junction, from where taxis and buses run; there is also a small local train to Goverdhan station.
By air: the nearest airport is Delhi, about 150 km away, with Agra also within reach; from there, come to Mathura and on to Govardhan.
So Govardhan is about 23 km from Mathura, an easy hour by road. So taxis, autos and buses all serve it. Our how to reach vrindavan guide covers getting to the region and the mathura vrindavan temple timings guide the temple hours. So travel from Mathura to Govardhan by road for the simplest, quickest trip.
The story of the Giriraj hill
By the tradition, when the people of Braj prepared their yearly worship of Indra, the god of rain, the child Krishna persuaded them to worship Govardhan hill instead, which gave them grass, water and shelter. Enraged, Indra sent a terrible storm to drown Braj and Krishna lifted the whole Giriraj hill on the little finger of his left hand, holding it aloft like an umbrella for seven days and nights, under which all the people and cattle sheltered, until Indra, humbled, bowed to him.
So Govardhan is worshipped as Giriraj, a form of Krishna himself; devotees do not climb it, out of reverence, but walk around it and the day after Diwali is kept as Govardhan Puja in memory of this pastime. By the tradition, it is also believed that the hill slowly diminishes over the ages, by a grain a day, through a curse of the sage Pulastya Muni. We present the story as the cherished belief and tradition holds it, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
What to see in Govardhan
Govardhan holds a garland of shrines and sacred waters around the hill and the parikrama marg. In brief, the main sights are:
Daan Ghati and the Mukharvind: the temple of Krishna's toll pastime at the foot of the hill and the worshipped lotus face of Giriraj; a chief starting point of the parikrama.
Haridev Mandir and Jatipura: the ancient temple of Giriraj-Govardhan Maharaj near Mansi Ganga and the Jatipura Mukharvind of Shrinathji, bathed daily with milk.
The sacred waters: Radha Kund and Shyam Kund, Mansi Ganga and the beautiful Kusum Sarovar, whose sandstone chhatris were built by Jawahar Singh of Bharatpur in memory of his father Raja Suraj Mal. Our braj kunds and sarovars page covers these.
So Daan Ghati, the Mukharvind, Haridev Mandir, the kunds and Kusum Sarovar are the main sights. For each in detail, see our places to visit in govardhan guide and combine nearby radha rani temple barsana. We present them with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith.
The Govardhan Parikrama and festivals
The heart of a Govardhan visit is the parikrama, the sacred circumambulation of the Giriraj hill, about 21 km on foot around the parikrama marg, walked barefoot by countless devotees; some perform the special milk or dandavati, parikrama, prostrating the whole way. It passes the Daan Ghati, Jatipura, Radha Kund, Kusum Sarovar, Mansi Ganga and the other shrines and has no fixed time, being walked day and night.
The chief festival is Govardhan Puja or Annakut, the day after Diwali, commemorating the lifting of the hill; also very important is Guru Purnima, known here as Mudia Poono, when the area is thronged. So the 21 km parikrama is the heart of Govardhan and Govardhan Puja and Guru Purnima its great festivals. Our best time to visit vrindavan mathura guide covers the seasons. We present the parikrama and festivals with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith.
Best time to visit and how to plan
The best time to visit Govardhan is the cool season, roughly October to March, when the weather is pleasant for the parikrama; Govardhan Puja and Guru Purnima are the most fervent but very crowded and the summer is hot for walking. Govardhan is easily done on a day trip from Mathura or Vrindavan, most often with Barsana and Nandgaon in the western Braj. Our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary helps you shape the day.
We arrange Govardhan tours from Mathura and Vrindavan, taking in the hill, the shrines, the kunds and the parikrama, often with Barsana and Nandgaon, with transport, routing timed around the darshan hours and a knowledgeable local guide. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free at the temples; our same-day govardhan barsana tour covers the western Braj, our two-day mathura vrindavan tour the twin cities and our one-day vrindavan tour package Vrindavan.
