Mathura to Khatu Shyam by car: an overview
From the birthplace of Krishna at Mathura to the beloved shrine of Shyam Baba at Khatu is a rewarding drive across into Rajasthan, about 301 to 314 km, roughly 5 and a half to 6 hours by car. Many devotees of Krishna make this journey, for Khatu Shyam is revered, by the tradition, as Barbarika, blessed to be worshipped by Krishna's own name. This guide gives the full distance and routes by car, about the temple, the best time to visit and how to plan. If you would like it all arranged for you, we can add it to a mathura vrindavan tour package with a car and driver.
This guide covers the Mathura to Khatu Shyam distance and the road routes; about Khatu Shyam Ji; the drive and where to stop; the train and air options; the best time to visit and darshan; and combining it with Vrindavan and Mathura. Our how to reach vrindavan guide covers reaching Braj itself.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Khatu Shyam is one of the most loved pilgrimages of Rajasthan and many of my guests who come for Braj also wish to take darshan of Shyam Baba, so this drive is a common one. It is an easy highway journey of about five and a half hours if the roads are clear, so start early from Mathura and you will reach in good time for the day's darshan. The one thing to plan around is the Falgun Mela in the Phalguna month, February or March, when the crowds are simply enormous, lakhs upon lakhs of devotees; the darshan then is a great experience but needs patience and care. On ordinary days it is far calmer. A private car with a driver who knows the road is the easiest way and you can combine it beautifully with Mathura and Vrindavan. About Khatu Shyam Ji
Khatu Shyam Ji, lovingly called Shyam Baba, is revered, by the tradition, as Barbarika, the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha in the Mahabharata, a warrior of such power that he could have ended the great war in a moment. By the tradition, he had vowed to fight for whichever side was losing; and so, before the war, Krishna, in the guise of a brahmin, asked him for his head as charity. Barbarika gave it gladly and Krishna, moved by his supreme sacrifice and devotion, blessed him that in the age of Kali he would be worshipped by Krishna's own name, Shyam and would be the refuge of his devotees.
So the head of Barbarika, by the tradition, was later found at Khatu and enshrined and the marble temple of Shyam Baba, in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, draws devotees from across the land, who call him Haare ka Sahara, the support of the defeated. So Khatu Shyam is worshipped as Barbarika, blessed by Krishna as Shyam. We present the account as the cherished belief and tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence, the beloved Shyam Baba of Khatu.
Driving from Mathura: the journey and stops
The drive from Mathura to Khatu Shyam runs largely on good national highways across into Rajasthan, an easy journey of about 5 and a half to 6 hours by car. The fastest way is via NH 21 and the road passes through the Rajasthan countryside toward the Sikar side, with places to stop for food and fuel along the highway.
A few honest tips for the drive: start early from Mathura to reach in good time for darshan; take a break or two midway for food and fuel; and if you wish, make a fuller trip of it with a halt near Bharatpur or Dausa or a longer stop at Jaipur. At the Falgun Mela and on Ekadashi days, allow much more time and expect diversions and parking some way from the temple. Our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers getting around Braj before you set off. So the drive is comfortable on good highways, with easy stops. So start early and plan around festival crowds.
Other ways: train and air
By train: there is no station at Khatu itself; the nearest railhead is Ringas Junction, about 17 km away, with taxis, autos and shared jeeps onward to the temple; Jaipur and Sikar are the larger stations a little farther out. You can train from Mathura toward Ringas or Jaipur and continue by road.
By air: the nearest airport is Jaipur, about 80 to 90 km from Khatu Shyam, from where taxis and buses run to the temple; from Mathura, however, a direct car avoids the changes.
So the nearest railhead is Ringas Junction and the nearest airport Jaipur. So from Mathura, a car is usually the simplest and most direct. So choose the train or air if you prefer, but for Khatu Shyam from Mathura, driving is the easiest way.
Best time to visit and darshan
The best time to visit Khatu Shyam is the cool season, roughly October to March, when the Rajasthan weather is pleasant. The greatest festival is the Falgun Mela, in the Phalguna month, February or March, when lakhs of devotees come and the town is extremely crowded, with the famous Nishan procession; Ekadashi days each month, Janmashtami and Holi are also very busy. On ordinary days the darshan is far calmer.
So come in the cool months and prepare for enormous crowds at the Falgun Mela. So for a peaceful darshan, avoid the mela and the Ekadashi rush and go early in the day. We present the festival and darshan with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith, the beloved darshan of Shyam Baba at Khatu.
