Tundla to Vrindavan: an overview
For countless pilgrims, especially those travelling from eastern India, the journey to the land of Krishna begins not at Mathura but at Tundla, the great railway junction near Agra where their train first sets them down in Braj. From there, the dham of Vrindavan is only about 82 km away, a smooth hour-and-a-half drive up the Yamuna Expressway. This guide gives the full distance and routes from Tundla to Vrindavan and back, with the train, taxi and bus options and how to plan. Our how to reach vrindavan guide covers all the ways to reach the dham.
From the ground (Gurudutt): I meet many pilgrims who are surprised to find themselves getting off at Tundla rather than Mathura; it happens because so many long-distance trains, especially from Kolkata, Patna and the east, stop at Tundla but not always at Mathura. Do not worry if that is you; Tundla to Vrindavan is an easy drive of about an hour and a half on the Yamuna Expressway, one of the best roads in the country. The simplest thing is to have a taxi waiting when your train arrives, so you are not haggling on the platform. And since Agra is just next door, many of my guests see the Taj first and then come up to Vrindavan. Book the cab ahead, keep your train details handy and enjoy the smooth road. About Tundla Junction
Tundla or Tundla Junction, with the station code TDL, is a major railway junction in the Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh, about 25 km from Agra, on the historic Delhi-Howrah main line. Built by the British and opened in 1866, it is a busy junction where nearly all long-distance trains on the route halt, many of them a technical stop to change crew and it is an important gateway for travellers from the east, from Kolkata, Patna and beyond.
So for many pilgrims to Braj, Tundla is where their train arrives, whether or not their train stops at Mathura, which is why the Tundla to Vrindavan journey is such a common one. So it is a handy, well-connected railhead. So if your train sets you down at Tundla, Vrindavan is only a short drive away up the expressway.

By bus: buses and shared cabs run in the area, via Agra or the highway, though for the temples of Vrindavan a taxi is far more convenient and time is better spent in darshan than at bus stands.
