Vrindavan to Jagannath Puri distance: the short answer
The distance from Vrindavan to Jagannath Puri is about 1,566 to 1,703 km by road, and the drive takes roughly 28 to 36 hours. Puri sits on the Odisha coast in eastern India, far from Braj, so this is a journey of more than a full day by car; in practice, most pilgrims travel by train from Mathura Junction or fly from Delhi to Bhubaneswar and drive the last stretch to Puri. For reaching Braj itself from across India, our how to reach vrindavan guide compares train, road and flight.
From the ground (Gurudutt): When pilgrims ask me about driving to Puri, I am honest: it is possible, but it is a hard two-day drive of nearly 1,600 km, and I rarely recommend it. The Lord is the same Lord, Krishna as Jagannath, so the devotion is worth every mile, but the sensible way is the train or a flight. I usually help families enjoy their days in Braj first, unhurried, and then put them on a good overnight train from Mathura, or a flight from Delhi to Bhubaneswar, so they arrive at Puri rested and ready for darshan rather than worn out by the road. The road figures below are honest and complete, but read the train and flight section before you decide. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
Vrindavan to Jagannath Puri: all road routes compared
If you do choose to drive, here are the three main routes from Vrindavan to Jagannath Puri, with distances and times, so you can weigh distance against speed:
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via Agra to Lucknow Expressway (fastest) | 1,663 km | About 28 hr |
Via NH 135C (shortest) | 1,576 km | About 36 hr |
Via Agra to Lucknow Expressway and Ganga Expressway | 1,594 km | About 29 hr |
So the Agra to Lucknow Expressway is the fastest at about 28 hours, while NH 135C is the shortest in distance but the slowest. So for most drivers the expressway routes are the better choice, and a two-day plan with an overnight halt is wise. These distances and times are the author's verified figures for this route.
Jagannath Puri to Vrindavan: the return journey
The return from Jagannath Puri to Vrindavan is almost the same distance, about 1,566 to 1,703 km. Here are the return routes:
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via Agra to Lucknow Expressway | 1,666 km | About 28 hr |
Via NH 20 | 1,703 km | About 36 hr |
Via NH 55 | 1,566 km | About 29 hr |
So the return journey is essentially the same long distance as the outward drive. So again, the train or a flight is the kinder choice for a trip of this length. These are the author's verified return figures. For a sense of other long journeys to Braj, see our bangalore to vrindavan distance guide.
By train or by air: the practical way to Puri
By train (most popular): board at Mathura Junction, a major station close to Vrindavan and well connected across India, for Puri Junction, the town's railhead near the temple. Several direct and connecting services run this route; the journey is long but a comfortable overnight-plus ride that many pilgrims prefer. Book early on IRCTC.
By air (fastest): travel from Braj to Delhi airport, about 150 km from Vrindavan by the Yamuna Expressway, and fly to Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, about 60 km from Puri, then continue by taxi or bus in roughly one and a half to two hours. The whole journey can be done in a day.
By road (least practical): the 28 to 36 hour drive above is best only for those who truly wish to drive, broken over two days.
So the train is the favourite and flying the fastest, with driving a distant third for this distance. So choose the train for an easy overnight journey or a flight to save time. Our vrindavan mathura itinerary helps you plan the Braj days before you travel on. We present this as general guidance; verify current schedules before you travel.
Who is Lord Jagannath: the Krishna connection
For a Braj pilgrim, the wonder of Puri is that the Lord there is Krishna himself. Jagannath, whose name means Lord of the Universe, is worshipped as a form of Krishna, and of Vishnu, together with his elder brother Balabhadra, who is Balarama, and their sister Subhadra, the same divine family loved in Braj. The three deities are carved of sacred wood and renewed in a rare ceremony called the Nabakalebara. A tender and beloved tradition holds that within the wooden form of Jagannath rests the Brahma Padartha, understood by devotees as the eternal heart of Krishna, carried to Puri from Dwarka after the Lord departed the world; so the heart of the Krishna of Braj is held to beat still at Puri. Puri is also one of the four Char Dham, the great shrines of the four directions, and our vrindavan dham guide places Braj within that sacred geography.
Devotees of Puri raise the joyful cry:
जय जगन्नाथ
Jai Jagannath
Victory to the Lord of the Universe
There is a further, gentle bridge between Puri and Braj: Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the great saint of divine love, spent his last years at Puri in devotion to Jagannath, and it was he who sent his followers to rediscover and restore the sacred places of Vrindavan. So Jagannath is Krishna, with Balarama and Subhadra, and Puri is bound to Braj through his very heart and through Chaitanya. So the journey from Vrindavan to Puri is a pilgrimage from the Lord's childhood land to his form as Lord of the Universe. We present this as the cherished belief and tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
Best time to visit and the Rath Yatra
The easiest time to visit Jagannath Puri is the cooler season from October to February, when the Odisha coast is pleasant for darshan and for the seaside town. The grandest occasion is the Rath Yatra, the great chariot festival in the month of Ashadha, usually June or July, when Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra ride out on three enormous chariots and lakhs of devotees gather to pull them; it is the most devotional and by far the most crowded time.
So go in winter for a peaceful visit, or at the Rath Yatra for the greatest devotion, planning well ahead for the crowds. So book travel and stay early for the festival. Our places to visit in vrindavan guide helps you plan the Braj darshan around the trip. We present this guidance for pilgrims with care.
Combining Vrindavan and Jagannath Puri
Vrindavan and Puri belong together as a Krishna pilgrimage: Braj is the land of his birth and childhood, and Puri enshrines him as Jagannath with Balarama and Subhadra. Because Puri lies far to the east, pilgrims usually see Mathura and Vrindavan first, unhurried, and then travel on to Puri by train or flight rather than road. We take care of the Braj part of such a journey, your darshan with a knowledgeable local guide, while you travel onward by rail or air. A shared Mathura and Vrindavan day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free, and our one-day vrindavan mathura tour covers Braj before the onward journey.
So the two shrines combine beautifully, with the Braj leg by us and the Puri leg by train or air. So you arrive at Puri rested after a peaceful time in Braj. Message me on WhatsApp at +91-7302265809 to plan the Vrindavan part of your pilgrimage.
Tips for the journey
Prefer the train or a flight. For nearly 1,600 km, driving is a hard two-day trip; the train from Mathura Junction or a flight from Delhi to Bhubaneswar is far easier.
Book early. Trains to Puri and flights to Bhubaneswar fill up, especially around the Rath Yatra and in the winter season.
If you drive, split it over two days. Plan an overnight halt around the midpoint, and favour the expressway routes over NH 135C.
Respect temple rules at Puri. The Jagannath Temple has its own customs for entry and darshan; check the current rules before you go.
Enjoy Braj first, unhurried. See Mathura and Vrindavan at a gentle pace, then travel east rested rather than rushing both.
