Vrindavan to Tirupati distance: the short answer
The distance from Vrindavan to Tirupati is about 1,995 to 2,081 km by road, and the drive takes roughly 36 to 44 hours. Tirupati lies in Andhra Pradesh in southern India, with the temple of Lord Venkateswara on the Tirumala hills above the town, far to the south of Braj; so this is a journey of nearly two days by car, and in practice most pilgrims fly from Delhi to Tirupati or take the train from Mathura Junction. For reaching Braj itself from across India, our how to reach vrindavan guide compares train, road and flight. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Many of the pilgrims I guide in Braj are from the South, and Tirupati is their own home shrine, so this route comes up often. I always tell them the plain truth: nearly 2,000 km is not a drive to attempt lightly, two days each way, and the Lord is just as near whether you fly or drive. The gentle way is to enjoy Braj unhurried and fly between the regions. It moves me that Govinda, the name the whole hill of Tirumala calls out, is the same name we sing to Krishna here in Vrindavan; north or south, it is the one Lord. The road figures below are honest and complete, but do read the flight and train section before you plan.
Vrindavan to Tirupati: all road routes compared
If you do choose to drive, here are the three main routes from Vrindavan to Tirupati, with distances and times, so you can weigh distance against speed:
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via NH 44 (shortest and fastest) | 1,995 km | About 36 hr |
Via NH 161 | 2,053 km | About 37 hr |
Via NH 44 and NH 40 | 2,080 km | About 44 hr |
So NH 44, the great north to south highway, is both the shortest and the fastest at about 1,995 km and 36 hours, and it is the sensible choice if you drive. So a plan with two or three days and overnight halts is wise. These distances and times are the author's verified figures for this route.
Tirupati to Vrindavan: the return journey
The return from Tirupati to Vrindavan is almost the same distance, about 1,996 to 2,081 km. Here are the return routes:
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via NH 44 | 1,996 km | About 36 hr |
Via NH 40 and NH 44 | 2,081 km | About 44 hr |
Via NH 161 | 1,997 km | About 36 hr |
So the return journey is essentially the same long distance as the outward drive. So again, a flight or the train is the kinder choice for a trip of this length. These are the author's verified return figures. For another long journey between the South and Braj, see our bangalore to vrindavan distance guide.
By air or by train: the practical way to Tirupati
By air (fastest): travel from Braj to Delhi airport, about 150 km from Vrindavan by the Yamuna Expressway, and fly to Tirupati Airport at Renigunta, about 15 km from the town; some pilgrims instead fly to Chennai, about 130 to 140 km from Tirupati, or to Bengaluru, and continue by road or rail. Flying turns a two-day drive into a few hours.
By train (most popular): board at Mathura Junction, a major station close to Vrindavan, for Tirupati, which has a large railway station near the foot of the Tirumala hills; from there, buses and taxis climb to the temple at Tirumala. The journey is long but a comfortable option many pilgrims prefer. Book early on IRCTC.
By road (least practical): the 36 to 44 hour drive above is best only for those who truly wish to drive, broken over two or three days.
So flying is the fastest and the train the favourite, with driving a distant third for this distance. So choose a flight to save time or the train for an easy journey. Our places to visit in vrindavan guide helps you plan the Braj days around the trip. We present this as general guidance; verify current schedules before you travel.
Who is Lord Venkateswara: the Krishna connection
For a Braj pilgrim, the joy of Tirupati is that the Lord of the hills is the same Supreme Lord worshipped in Vrindavan. Lord Venkateswara of Tirumala, also called Srinivasa, Balaji and Govinda, is a form of Vishnu, of whom Krishna is the complete descent; so to a devotee of Krishna, Venkateswara is the one Lord in another form. By the tradition, he is the refuge of mankind in the age of Kali, manifest on the seven hills of Tirumala to receive and bless all who come. Tirumala is among the most visited and most beloved shrines in the world. Our vrindavan dham guide places Braj within the wider sacred geography of such shrines.
The whole hill of Tirumala rings with a single name, which is also one of the dearest names of Krishna:
गोविन्दा गोविन्दा
Govinda Govinda
the cry of Tirumala, and a beloved name of Krishna
So Venkateswara is Vishnu, of whom Krishna is the full avatar, and Govinda is the name both shrines sing. So the journey from Vrindavan to Tirupati is a pilgrimage within the worship of the one Lord, from his land of play in Braj to his hill of grace in the South. We present this as the cherished belief and tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
Best time to visit and booking your darshan
The best time to visit Tirupati is the cooler season from September to February, when the hill and the darshan are comfortable. Tirumala is one of the busiest temples in the world, so it is wise to book your darshan in advance through the temple administration, the TTD, and to plan for long queues, especially on weekends, on festivals, and during the grand Brahmotsavam, usually in September or October, the temple's greatest celebration.
So go in the cooler months, book your darshan ahead, and allow a full day at Tirumala for the climb, the queue and the laddu prasadam. So plan for crowds and confirm the current rules before you go. Our mathura vrindavan city map helps you plan the Braj leg with the same care. We present this as general guidance; confirm the latest darshan and booking rules before you travel.
Combining Vrindavan and Tirupati
Vrindavan and Tirupati belong together as a Vaishnava pilgrimage: Braj is the land of Krishna, and Tirumala the hill of Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu. Because the two lie far apart, north and south, pilgrims see each region fully and travel between them by flight or train rather than road. Many devotees from Hyderabad, Bengaluru and the wider South pair their Tirupati darshan with a visit to Braj; we shape convenient tours for exactly these travellers, so the Braj days are smooth and well guided. See our mathura vrindavan tour from hyderabad for one such plan.
So the two shrines combine as a journey within the worship of the one Lord, with the Braj leg by us and the Tirupati leg in its own region. So you give each its due, unhurried. A shared Mathura and Vrindavan day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free, and our one-day vrindavan mathura tour covers Braj for those short on time. Tips for the journey
Fly or take the train. For nearly 2,000 km, driving is a two-day trip each way; a flight from Delhi to Tirupati or the train from Mathura Junction is far easier.
Book darshan in advance. Tirumala is among the busiest temples in the world; reserve your darshan through the TTD and plan for queues.
Allow a full day at Tirumala. The hill climb, the darshan and the prasadam take time; do not rush the Lord's hill.
If you drive, favour NH 44. It is the shortest and fastest; split the drive over two or three days with overnight halts.
Enjoy Braj unhurried. See Mathura and Vrindavan at a gentle pace, then travel between the regions rested rather than rushing both.
