Vrindavan to Ujjain: an overview
From the land of Krishna's childhood in Braj to the city of Mahakal on the Shipra is one of the great pilgrim journeys of central India, about 610 to 683 km, a long day by road or an overnight by train. Pilgrims make it to pair the darshan of Krishna at Vrindavan and Mathura with the darshan of Shiva as Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain and there is a lovely Krishna link at both ends. This guide gives the full distance and routes both ways, the trains, flights and buses, about Ujjain and how to plan. If you would like your Braj darshan arranged first, we run it as a mathura vrindavan tour with a local guide.
This guide covers the Vrindavan to Ujjain distance and the road routes; the return journey; how to travel by road, train, flight and bus; about Ujjain and its Krishna connection; what to see in Vrindavan and Mathura; and how to plan. Our how to plan vrindavan mathura trip guide helps with the Braj side.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Vrindavan to Ujjain is a genuinely long haul, so I never advise trying to drive it there and back in a rush. If you love the road, do it as one long day with an early start and a driver who knows the NE 4 route, because there have been closures and diversions that change the timing. Better still, for most of my guests, is the overnight train from Mathura Junction to Ujjain Junction; you sleep and arrive fresh for the Bhasma Aarti, which is the whole reason to be in Ujjain before dawn. And do not miss the Krishna connection: Ujjain is where the Lord studied at Sandipani's ashram, so for a Braj pilgrim it completes the story beautifully. Book trains well ahead, especially around the Shivratri and Kumbh seasons.
Vrindavan to Ujjain distance and routes
The distance from Vrindavan to Ujjain by road, with the main route options and typical driving times, is given below.
Route | Distance | Time |
Via NE 4 (fastest, avoids NE 4 closures) | About 648 km | About 11 hr 2 min |
Via NE 4 and Ujjain Rd / Ujjain-Garoth Rd | About 643 km | About 11 hr 5 min |
Via NE 4 and Ujjain-Garoth Rd | About 683 km | About 13 hr 2 min |
So the fastest route is via NE 4, about 648 km in roughly 11 hours 2 minutes, currently the best as it avoids the road closures affecting the alternatives. So the Garoth Road routes are similar or longer. So take the NE 4 route, confirming your live route on the day, as closures and traffic change.
Ujjain to Vrindavan distance and routes
For the return journey, the distance from Ujjain to Vrindavan by road, with the main route options and typical driving times, is given below.
Route | Distance | Time |
Via NE 4 (fastest, usual traffic) | About 610 km | About 9 hr 22 min |
Via Ujjain Rd / Ujjain-Garoth Rd and NE 4 | About 619 km | About 9 hr 29 min |
Via Ujjain-Garoth Rd and NE 4 | About 657 km | About 11 hr 44 min |
So the return by NE 4 is about 610 km in roughly 9 hours 22 minutes, a little quicker than the outward trip, which is affected by the current NE 4 closures. So the Garoth Road routes are longer. So take the NE 4 route back from Ujjain to Vrindavan, allowing for live traffic.
How to travel: road, train, flight and bus
By train: for the long distance, direct trains run from Mathura Junction, about 15 km from Vrindavan, to Ujjain Junction, a rail distance of about 605 km, an ideal overnight option that leaves you fresh for the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti; reach Mathura and, at the other end, the Mahakaleshwar temple by a short road hop.
By car or taxi: a private car takes the NE 4 route, about 648 km in roughly 11 hours, best for those who want to travel on their own schedule; a long but flexible day.
By air: the quickest option; the nearest airport to Ujjain is Indore, about 55 km away, so fly between Delhi and Indore and cover each end by road.
By bus: state and private buses run toward Ujjain via the highway, mostly overnight, though for the long distance the train is more restful.
So the train is most restful, the car most flexible and flying the fastest. So choose by your priority for the long journey between Vrindavan and Ujjain.
About Ujjain: Mahakaleshwar and the Krishna connection
Ujjain, on the banks of the sacred Shipra river in Madhya Pradesh, is one of the seven holiest cities of India and one of the four seats of the Kumbh Mela, where the Simhastha is held every twelve years. Its heart is the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, revered as Mahakal, the lord of time and famous for its unique pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, the sacred-ash worship offered before sunrise. Around it stand the temples of Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi and Mangalnath and the riverside ghats.
For a pilgrim from Braj, there is a beautiful link: by the tradition, it was at Ujjain, in the ashram of Guru Sandipani, that Krishna, with Balarama and his friend Sudama, completed his education, so that Ujjain holds the story of Krishna the student as Braj holds that of Krishna the child. So Ujjain is the city of Mahakal and of Krishna's learning. We present these sacred stories with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
What to see in Vrindavan and Mathura
Before or after Ujjain, the temples of Braj await: in Vrindavan, the beloved banke bihari temple, the magnificent prem mandir vrindavan and the iskcon temple vrindavan; and in Mathura, the krishna janmabhoomi temple, the very birthplace of Krishna. Our places to visit in vrindavan guide covers the town, our vrindavan city map shows the layout and the mathura vrindavan temple timings guide the darshan hours.
How to plan your trip
For the long journey, the kindest plan is usually the overnight train from Mathura Junction to Ujjain Junction, arriving in time for the Bhasma Aarti; those who love the road can drive the NE 4 route and those short of time can fly via Indore. Allow at least a full day for Braj and a full day for Ujjain, more for the wider circuits. Our vrindavan mathura itinerary helps you shape the Braj side.
We arrange your Braj darshan at Mathura and Vrindavan and can help plan your onward journey to Ujjain by train or private car. A shared day tour of Mathura and Vrindavan starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free at the temples; our one-day vrindavan mathura tour covers Vrindavan and our two-day mathura vrindavan tour the twin cities, while a private car for the Ujjain leg can be arranged on request.
