Vrindavan to Somnath distance: the short answer
The distance from Vrindavan to Somnath is about 1,330 to 1,340 km by road, and the drive takes roughly 22 to 26 hours. Somnath stands at Prabhas on the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat, far to the west of Braj, so this is a journey of a full day or more by car; in practice most pilgrims fly from Delhi toward Saurashtra and continue by road, or take the train from Mathura Junction to Veraval. For reaching Braj itself from across India, our how to reach vrindavan guide compares train, road and flight. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Of all the far journeys from Braj, this one moves me the most. Somnath is a Shiva shrine, the first Jyotirlinga, but it stands at Prabhas, the very shore where our Krishna ended his earthly leela, where the hunter's arrow found him and he returned to his eternal home. So a pilgrim who begins in Vrindavan, among the scenes of the Lord's childhood, and ends at Somnath, walks the whole arc of his earthly story, from the cradle in Braj to the shore of his departure. I always tell families to make this a Gujarat pilgrimage together, Dwarka and Somnath, and to fly or train rather than drive the long road. The figures below are honest and complete, but read the flight and train section before you plan.
Vrindavan to Somnath: all road routes compared
If you do choose to drive, here are the three main routes from Vrindavan to Somnath, with distances and times, so you can weigh distance against speed:
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via NH 51 (fastest) | 1,340 km | About 22 hr 9 min |
Via Udaipur to Ahmedabad Highway (shortest) | 1,330 km | About 26 hr |
Via Udaipur to Ahmedabad Highway and NH 51 | 1,338 km | About 22 hr 10 min |
So NH 51 is the fastest at about 22 hours, while the Udaipur to Ahmedabad Highway is the shortest in distance but the slowest. So the expressway-grade routes are the better choice, and a two-day plan with an overnight halt is wise. These distances and times are the author's verified figures for this route. If you drive through Rajasthan, our udaipur to vrindavan distance guide covers that stretch.
Somnath to Vrindavan: the return journey
The return from Somnath to Vrindavan is almost the same distance, about 1,339 to 1,367 km. Here are the return routes:
Route | Distance | Driving time |
Via NE 4 | 1,339 km | About 21 hr 34 min |
Via NH 47 and NE 4 | 1,367 km | About 25 hr |
Via NH 27 | 1,361 km | About 21 hr 59 min |
So the return journey is essentially the same long distance as the outward drive. So again, a flight or the train is the kinder choice for a trip of this length. These are the author's verified return figures.
By air or by train: the practical way to Somnath
By air (fastest): travel from Braj to Delhi airport and fly toward Saurashtra, landing at Rajkot, about 190 km from Somnath, at Diu, about 85 to 90 km away, or at Ahmedabad for the widest choice of flights, then continue by road. Flying turns a two-day drive into a few hours plus a road transfer.
By train (popular): board at Mathura Junction, a major station close to Vrindavan, for Veraval, the railway station nearest Somnath at about 6 to 7 km, or for Somnath station itself; taxis and autos cover the last short stretch. Services toward Saurashtra are long but comfortable, often with a change. Book early on IRCTC.
By road (least practical): the 22 to 26 hour drive above is best only for those who truly wish to drive, broken over two days.
So flying is the fastest and the train a comfortable favourite, with driving a distant third. So choose a flight to save time or the train for an easy journey. Our vrindavan mathura itinerary helps you plan the Braj days before you travel on. We present this as general guidance; verify current schedules before you travel.
The shore where Krishna's story ended: Prabhas
For a devotee of Krishna, Somnath is far more than a distant Shiva shrine, for it stands at Prabhas, the shore where the Lord ended his earthly life. By the tradition, after the sorrows that followed the great Mahabharata war, Krishna withdrew to the forest at Prabhas; there, a short distance from where the Somnath temple now stands, at the place remembered as Bhalka Tirth, a hunter named Jara mistook the resting Lord's foot for a deer and struck him with an arrow, and Krishna, comforting the trembling hunter, returned to his eternal abode. Nearby, at Dehotsarga by the Triveni Sangam, where three sacred rivers meet the sea, he is said to have left his body. His kingdom of Dwarka lies in the same Saurashtra region, and the Lord of Dwarka is honoured in Braj at the dwarkadhish temple mathura.
So Somnath and Prabhas hold the close of Krishna's earthly leela, as Braj holds its beginning. So a pilgrim who journeys from Vrindavan to Somnath travels the whole arc of the Lord's time on earth, from his childhood land to the shore of his departure. We present this as the cherished belief and tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
Who is the Lord of Somnath: the first Jyotirlinga
Somnath is, first and foremost, a shrine of Lord Shiva, worshipped here as the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the self-manifest lingas of light, which makes it among the most ancient and revered of all Shiva shrines. The name Somnath means Lord of the Soma, the Moon: by the tradition, the Moon god Chandra, cursed to wane away, worshipped Shiva on this shore and was released, so that the Moon waxes and wanes but never dies. The temple has been destroyed and lovingly rebuilt many times across the centuries, and it stands today by the Arabian Sea as a symbol of enduring faith. Our vrindavan dham guide places Braj within this wider sacred geography of the great shrines.
Pilgrims worship the Lord of Somnath with the eternal prayer of Shiva:
ॐ नमः शिवाय
Om Namah Shivaya
I bow to Lord Shiva
So Somnath is the first Jyotirlinga of Shiva and the shore of Krishna's departure both at once, holy to Shaivas and Vaishnavas alike. So few places hold so much of the sacred in one shore. We present this as the cherished belief and tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
Combining Somnath, Dwarka and Vrindavan
Braj and Gujarat together make one of the most meaningful Krishna pilgrimages in India. Vrindavan and Mathura are the land of the Lord's birth and childhood; Dwarka, on the Saurashtra coast, was his kingdom; and Somnath, at Prabhas nearby, is where his earthly life came to its close. Many devotees see Braj first, with its places to visit in vrindavan, and then travel to Gujarat for Dwarka and Somnath together, since the two lie in the same region. Because Gujarat is far to the west, the journey between them is best by train or flight rather than road.
So Braj, Dwarka and Somnath form one journey through the whole of Krishna's earthly story, with the Braj leg by us and the Gujarat leg in its own region. So you give each its due, unhurried. A shared Mathura and Vrindavan day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free, and our one-day vrindavan mathura tour covers Braj before the onward journey. Tips for the journey
Fly or take the train. For over 1,300 km, driving is a two-day trip each way; a flight from Delhi to Rajkot or Ahmedabad, or the train from Mathura Junction to Veraval, is far easier.
Make it a Gujarat pilgrimage. Pair Somnath with Dwarka, Krishna's kingdom, and with Bhalka Tirth and Dehotsarga at Prabhas; they are close together.
Book travel early. Trains toward Saurashtra and flights to Rajkot, Diu and Ahmedabad fill up in the pilgrimage season; reserve ahead.
Allow time at Prabhas. Beyond the Somnath temple, give yourself time for Bhalka Tirth and the Triveni Sangam, where the Krishna story is most felt.
Enjoy Braj first, unhurried. See Mathura and Vrindavan at a gentle pace, then travel west rested rather than rushing both.
