Chitrakoot to Vrindavan: the routes

Nearly every route uses the Bundelkhand Expressway for the long main stretch. The options, with approximate distance and time:

The fastest is the Bundelkhand Expressway joined to the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, at about 520 km and just under 7.5 hours, even though it is a little longer in distance, because the roads are fast. The route via the Bundelkhand Expressway and NH 19 is the shortest at about 499 km but slightly slower at the Braj end. Times are approximate and depend on traffic and toll queues; please check live maps before you set off.

Vrindavan to Chitrakoot: the return

The return leg, Vrindavan to Chitrakoot, mirrors the outward journey. The options, with approximate distance and time:

The expressway combination is again the fastest for the return, at about 520 km and around 7 hr 36 min, with the direct Bundelkhand Expressway route a little shorter in distance but slightly slower. As with the outward drive, treat these as guide figures and check live traffic before you leave.

The Bundelkhand Expressway

The road that makes this journey easy is the Bundelkhand Expressway, which has opened up the Chitrakoot region:

• A four-lane expressway from Chitrakoot. The Bundelkhand Expressway is an access-controlled expressway of about 296 km running from the Chitrakoot area to Etawah, opened in 2022 and can be widened in the future; it has cut hours from the old journey out of Bundelkhand.

• It links to the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. At its northern end near Etawah it meets the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and this join makes the fast route on towards Braj, carrying you on smooth, quick roads for most of the distance.

• A few practical notes. It is a toll road with electronic tolling, so keep your FASTag active; the exact tolls depend on your vehicle and distance and can change, so check the current rates before you travel.

Chitrakoot and Rama: joining the two avatars

For a pilgrim, this is more than a road journey. Chitrakoot is one of the holiest places of the Ramayana, the forest where Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are said to have spent the greater part of their fourteen years of exile. Its sacred sites are dear to every devotee of Rama:

• Ramghat and the Mandakini. The ghat on the gentle Mandakini river where Rama is said to have bathed, with its evening aarti and boats, the heart of Chitrakoot.

• Kamadgiri. The sacred forested hill revered as the form of Rama himself, circled by pilgrims on a parikrama, much as Govardhan is circled in Braj.

• Bharat Milap and the ashrams. The place where Bharat came to beg Rama to return to Ayodhya and the ashrams of the sages, among them Sati Anusuya, that fill Chitrakoot with the peace of the exile.

To travel from Chitrakoot to Vrindavan is thus to move from Rama to Krishna, the two great avatars of Vishnu, in a single journey, a pilgrimage many devotees find deeply complete.

Best ways to travel

From Chitrakoot you can reach Vrindavan by road or rail; air is not practical:

• By car or taxi (most flexible). About 7.5 hours on the Bundelkhand and Agra-Lucknow expressways, with the freedom to break the journey and to reach the edge of Vrindavan's old town. Best as an overnight; fares vary by vehicle and season, so ask us for a live quote.

• By train (restful for the distance). Chitrakoot Dham Karwi is the main railway station for Chitrakoot and trains connect the region towards Mathura Junction, the railway station for Vrindavan, about 14 km away; for a long journey the train is restful, though services are fewer than from the big cities. Check current times and fares on IRCTC.

• By air (not practical). There is no convenient direct flight for this route; any air journey would go a long way round via a major airport, so road or rail is far better from Chitrakoot.

Should you do it in a day

Honestly, no. At about 7.5 hours each way, a same-day return means around fifteen hours on the road, which leaves no time for darshan. The far better plans:

• Overnight in Braj. Travel up one day, stay in Vrindavan or Mathura and give the next full day to darshan before returning.

• Break the journey at Agra. The route passes the Agra region, so you can halt there for the Taj Mahal and continue the short leg to Braj the next morning.

• A wider Rama and Krishna pilgrimage. Fold Braj into a longer pilgrimage that also takes in Ayodhya, the birthplace of Rama, for a complete journey through the story of the Lord.

Combining with the Rama pilgrimage

Because Chitrakoot is a Rama pilgrimage, a journey to Braj pairs beautifully with the other great Rama and Krishna sites of the region. • October to March is the most pleasant season for the long drive and for temple darshan, with cool, comfortable weather.

• Plan an overnight so you reach the temples fresh and before the midday closing, unhurried by the long journey.

• Keep your FASTag active and topped up; the Bundelkhand and Agra-Lucknow expressways are toll roads with electronic tolling.

• Start early, fuel up before the expressway and use the marked rest stops for tea and breaks on the long stretch.

• In Vrindavan, cars are kept out of the old-town lanes, so park at the edge and take an e-rickshaw for the temples.
