Haridwar to Vrindavan distance: an overview

Haridwar, the great gateway on the Ganga and Vrindavan, the town of Krishna on the Yamuna, are two of North India's most beloved pilgrimage places and the journey between them, about 338 to 370 km by road and roughly 6 hours, is one many devotees make, pairing a bath in the Ganga with the temples of Braj. The drive runs down from the foothills, skirting the Delhi region by expressway, to the plains of Braj; there are three main routes and the best of them cover the distance in under 6 hours. This guide gives every route with its distance and time, all the ways to travel, what to expect on the road and what awaits you in Vrindavan; and if you would like it all arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour package with Experience My India can meet you and guide your Braj days.

From the ground (Gurudutt): So many of my guests come to Braj straight from Haridwar and Rishikesh, carrying the peace of the Ganga aarti with them. My honest advice for the drive is to start early, take one of the expressway routes rather than the slow all-highway one and build in a rest and meal stop near the Delhi ring. Reach Vrindavan by afternoon, rest and give the evening to Banke Bihari and the Prem Mandir lights. From the Ganga to the Yamuna in a day is a beautiful thing. Radhe Radhe. The routes by road, compared

There are three main road routes from Haridwar to Vrindavan; here they are side by side:

Route

Distance

Driving time

Via

Fastest

370 km

About 5 hr 52 min

NH 344G and Yamuna Expressway

Shortest

338 km

About 5 hr 55 min

Eastern Peripheral Expressway

Alternative

366 km

About 7 hr 32 min

NH 344G

In short: the two expressway routes, via the Yamuna Expressway (370 km, the fastest) and via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (338 km, the shortest), both take just under 6 hours and are far quicker than the all-highway NH 344G route, which is longer in time at about 7 hours 32 minutes.

Which route should you choose?

  • For the quickest drive: the Yamuna Expressway route. The 370 km route via NH 344G and the Yamuna Expressway is the fastest, about 5 hours 52 minutes, on smooth, fast expressway for much of the way; it is the usual choice and it brings you in past Mathura to Vrindavan.

  • For the shortest distance: the Eastern Peripheral Expressway route. The 338 km route via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway is the shortest, about 5 hours 55 minutes and helps you skirt the busiest parts of the Delhi region; the time is almost the same as the fastest route.

  • Best avoided: the all-highway route. The 366 km route via NH 344G alone, without the expressways, is slower at about 7 hours 32 minutes, with more traffic and towns; choose it only if the expressways are closed or you have a particular reason.

Check live traffic on the day, since conditions near the Delhi region can change which route is quickest; a driver who knows the roads will pick the best one.

How to travel from Haridwar to Vrindavan

There are several ways to make the journey; the options at a glance:

  • By car or taxi (best). The most comfortable and flexible way, about 6 hours by one of the expressway routes, door to door, with rest stops of your choosing; ideal for families, elders and pilgrims with luggage and easily arranged as part of a Braj tour.

  • By train. Trains connect Haridwar to Mathura Junction, some direct and some via Delhi; from Mathura, Vrindavan is about 15 km by road. Check the current timetable and book ahead, especially in the pilgrimage seasons.

  • By bus. Buses run from Haridwar towards Delhi and on to Mathura, from where you take a local ride to Vrindavan; it is the budget option, though slower and with changes.

  • By air. There is no direct flight for so short a hop; the nearest airport to Haridwar is Dehradun (Jolly Grant) and to Vrindavan is Delhi, so road remains the practical way between the two.

If you are coming by rail, our tundla to vrindavan distance guide covers the nearby railheads and the last leg into Vrindavan and our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers getting around once you arrive.

The drive: what to expect

  • A start in the Ganga foothills at Haridwar, dropping to the plains as you go south.

  • A stretch skirting the Delhi region, by the Eastern Peripheral or the Yamuna Expressway.

  • Fast, smooth expressway driving for much of the middle of the journey, with tolls.

  • Good food and fuel stops along the expressways; plan a rest and meal near the Delhi ring.

  • Arrival past Mathura into Vrindavan, about 15 km apart, in the heart of Braj.

Start early to reach Vrindavan by the afternoon, rest and keep the evening for darshan; the expressway routes make an easy day of it.

From the Ganga to the Yamuna: pairing Haridwar and Braj

For many pilgrims, the Haridwar to Vrindavan journey is part of a larger pilgrimage, from the Ganga to the Yamuna and it pairs beautifully:

  • Haridwar and Rishikesh for the Ganga aarti, the ghats and the gateway to the Char Dham

  • Then Braj: Vrindavan and Mathura for the birthplace and childhood of Krishna

  • and for those with more days, Agra and the Taj Mahal or Ayodhya and Varanasi beyond

For a longer pilgrimage circuit, our mathura vrindavan ayodhya varanasi tour links the great temple cities, while the braj 84 kos yatra covers the whole of Braj. We hold all these holy places with reverence.

Best time, tips and how to plan

  • Start early from Haridwar to reach Vrindavan by the afternoon and keep the evening for darshan.

  • Take one of the expressway routes; avoid the slower all-highway NH 344G route if you can.

  • Plan a rest and meal stop near the Delhi ring, roughly the middle of the drive.

  • Carry water and some cash for tolls; the expressways are tolled.

  • October to March is the pleasantest season for both the drive and the temple towns.

"We booked the Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package from Haridwar because we had only one day available. The early start helped us reach Vrindavan by afternoon, and the expressway route made the journey comfortable. We visited Banke Bihari Temple, ISKCON, Prem Mandir and Keshi Ghat, and also included Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura. The evening at Prem Mandir was especially beautiful. The itinerary was busy, but the planning around the temple closing hours worked well for us."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package was a great choice after travelling from Haridwar. We did not want to combine the road journey with rushed sightseeing, so having two days made everything easier. We explored Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir, ISKCON and Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan and also visited Mathura, which is only around 15 km away. We especially liked having enough time to plan darshan in the morning and evening instead of arriving during the midday temple closure."

"We chose the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package because we wanted a peaceful pilgrimage after our Haridwar visit. The extra time allowed us to explore Banke Bihari Temple, Prem Mandir, ISKCON and Keshi Ghat without constantly checking the clock. We also spent proper time in Mathura at Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi. Since the Haridwar to Vrindavan journey is roughly six hours by the faster expressway routes, we felt three days gave us a much better balance between travelling, darshan and rest. The team also advised us to start early and keep the evening free for Vrindavan darshan, which worked perfectly."
