By Gurudutt, Experience My India·19 September 2026

Dehradun to Vrindavan Distance

Quick Answer

The distance from Dehradun to Vrindavan is about 370 km by the fastest route, and the drive takes roughly five and a half to six hours, most directly on NH 344G joined to the Yamuna Expressway, using the fast expressways to skirt Delhi and reach Braj. Being a medium-long haul, it is comfortably done in a day, from the Doon Valley of Uttarakhand to the land of Krishna. There is a beautiful thread to the journey, for it follows the sacred Yamuna, which rises in the Uttarakhand Himalayas and flows down to Braj. The return, Vrindavan to Dehradun, is much the same, about 369 km. All times are approximate.

Dehradun to Vrindavan distance: an overview

From Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand in the green Doon Valley, the land of Krishna lies about 364 to 383 km to the south, roughly five and a half to six hours by road, most directly on NH 344G joined to the Yamuna Expressway, using the fast expressways to skirt Delhi and reach Braj. Being a medium-long haul, it is comfortably done in a day, from the Himalayan foothills to the birthplace of Krishna. And there is a lovely meaning to the journey, for it follows the sacred Yamuna, who rises high in the Uttarakhand Himalayas and flows down to bless the land of Braj. This guide gives the routes both ways and how to travel them; and if you would like the drive, the darshan and the e-rickshaw arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan your trip and meet you at Delhi if you fly.

From the ground (Gurudutt): I love welcoming my guests from Dehradun and the hills and I tell them something dear: the very Yamuna who blesses your Uttarakhand at her source flows down to us here in Braj, where Krishna played on her banks. So your journey follows the river home. It is an easy drive of about six hours by the expressways; come and see the evening Yamuna aarti and feel the river you know from the mountains. Radhe Radhe.

The NH 344G and Yamuna Expressway route is the fastest at about 5 hr 43 min, using the expressways to skirt Delhi; the Eastern Peripheral Expressway route is similar and the NH 44 route, though shortest in distance at about 364 km, a little slower. NH 344G carries the first part, from Dehradun towards the NCR, before the expressways to Braj. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.

Vrindavan to Dehradun: the return

The return, Vrindavan to Dehradun, is much the same. The options:

As with the outward drive, the expressways carry you smoothly past Delhi. Treat these as guide figures and check live traffic before you leave.

The route via NH 344G and the expressways

The road from Dehradun to Braj joins the hills to the expressways:

  • NH 344G from the Doon Valley. NH 344G carries the journey from Dehradun down from the Doon Valley towards the plains and the National Capital Region, the first part of the drive.

  • The Yamuna Expressway and the bypass. From the NCR, the journey joins the Yamuna Expressway, the fast expressway to Braj, sometimes by way of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, which skirts Delhi to the east; these fast roads make the drive smooth and quick.

  • A few practical notes. The expressways are toll roads, so keep your FASTag ready; the drive of about six hours is comfortable and easily done in a day, on good, fast roads for most of the way.

Where the road reaches the Braj end, our agra to vrindavan distance guide covers the approach to Mathura and Vrindavan.

Following the Yamuna: from the Himalayas to Braj

For a pilgrim from Uttarakhand, this journey carries a beautiful meaning, for it follows the sacred Yamuna:

  • The Yamuna's Himalayan source. The Yamuna, one of the holiest rivers of India, rises high in the Uttarakhand Himalayas, at Yamunotri, one of the Char Dham of the mountains, to which Dehradun is a gateway; so Uttarakhand is the land of the Yamuna's birth.

  • Her Braj heartland. The same Yamuna flows down through the plains to Braj, where she is Yamuna Maharani, beloved of Krishna, who played on her banks; the great evening Yamuna aarti at the ghats of Mathura and Vrindavan honours her.

  • Following the river home. So to travel from Dehradun to Braj is, in a sense, to follow the Yamuna from her Himalayan source to Krishna's land, a journey along the sacred river; and the very Yamuna Expressway carries her name.

See the great Yamuna and its aarti at the braj yamuna ghats and leela sites, the heart of the river's worship in Braj.

Best ways to travel: road, air and rail

For this medium-long haul, Dehradun gives you good choices:

  • By car (best). About five and a half to six hours by NH 344G and the Yamuna Expressway, doable in a day, with the freedom to see Vrindavan and Mathura together; the most flexible choice. Fares vary, so ask us for a live quote.

  • By air. Dehradun has an airport at Jolly Grant with flights towards Delhi; fly to Delhi and drive the last stretch to Braj, about 3 to 3.5 hours, an option if you prefer to fly. Check current flights and we can meet you at Delhi.

  • By train. Dehradun is a railway station with trains towards the region and connections towards Mathura Junction, the station for Vrindavan; a restful option, though you may need to check connections. Check current trains on IRCTC.

For the drive from the Delhi side and fares, see our delhi to mathura vrindavan distance taxi cost guide and for arriving by train, our tundla to vrindavan distance guide covers the region's railheads.

What to see in Braj, best time and tips

When you reach Braj, the great sights await:

  • In Vrindavan and Mathura. See the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show and the ISKCON temple in Vrindavan; and the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the Dwarkadhish temple and the Yamuna ghats in Mathura, only about 14 km apart.

  • The Yamuna aarti. Do not miss the great evening Yamuna aarti at the ghats, above all Vishram Ghat at Mathura and Keshi Ghat at Vrindavan, a beautiful honouring of the river you know from the hills.

  • Best time and tips. October to March is the most pleasant season; take the expressway route and start early so you reach the temples fresh and in the old towns take an e-rickshaw for the temple lanes, as cars are kept out.

See the banke bihari temple, prem mandir vrindavan and iskcon temple vrindavan in Vrindavan and the krishna janmabhoomi and dwarkadhish temple in Mathura.

We welcome pilgrims from Dehradun and across Uttarakhand to Braj with a comfortable vehicle, the temple darshan and the e-rickshaw arranged and a Braj-born guide and we can meet you at Delhi if you fly. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free. Our mathura vrindavan tour covers the twin cities, our vrindavan tour package Vrindavan in a day, the braj 84 kos yatra the whole of Braj and our agra mathura vrindavan tour package the Taj with Braj; our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary, how to commute in vrindavan and mathura vrindavan temple timings guides help you plan. "I booked the Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package with Experience My India and had a very smooth pilgrimage. We were travelling from Visakhapatnam and wanted to make the most of our limited time, so having the vehicle and local arrangements organised was a big help. Gurudutt ji was very supportive and guided us patiently throughout the day. We visited Banke Bihari Temple, Prem Mandir, ISKCON Temple and Krishna Janmabhoomi, followed by the peaceful Yamuna aarti. The local e-rickshaw arrangement made the narrow temple lanes much easier to manage. I really appreciated the way Experience My India kept the journey focused on darshan without unnecessary delays. It was a long day, but the spiritual experience made every hour worthwhile."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package with Experience My India was a beautiful family pilgrimage. We wanted to visit both Mathura and Vrindavan properly instead of trying to rush everything into one day. Gurudutt ji understood this and guided us very well throughout the trip. We visited Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish Temple in Mathura, along with Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir and ISKCON in Vrindavan. The evening Yamuna aarti was especially peaceful and became one of the most memorable moments of our journey. The vehicle and e-rickshaw arrangements were handled comfortably, and communication was clear at every stage. Experience My India gave us enough time to enjoy the spiritual atmosphere of Braj rather than simply ticking places off a list."

"I recently travelled with Experience My India on the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package, and the relaxed pace suited our family perfectly. Coming from Mangaluru, we wanted a meaningful Braj visit with enough time for temple darshan and local experiences. Gurudutt ji was extremely helpful and shared useful guidance throughout the journey. We explored Banke Bihari Temple, Prem Mandir and ISKCON in Vrindavan, and Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish Temple in Mathura. We also spent time near the Yamuna ghats and experienced the evening aarti, which felt very special. The local e-rickshaw arrangements made sightseeing in the old temple areas convenient. Experience My India managed the trip with care, and the extra day allowed us to experience Braj without feeling rushed."
