Vrindavan vs Haridwar: the short answer
Both Vrindavan and Haridwar are among the most beloved pilgrimages of north India and both are deeply holy; but they are different in their heart. Vrindavan, in Braj, is the town where Krishna spent his childhood, the very centre of Krishna and Radha devotion, on the sacred Yamuna, filled with temples, kirtan and joyful bhakti. Haridwar, in Uttarakhand at the edge of the Himalayas, is one of the seven holiest cities of Hinduism, where the sacred Ganga enters the plains, famed for its great Ganga Aarti, its holy dip and the Kumbh Mela. So the choice is really about what your heart seeks. To experience Vrindavan and the whole of Krishna's Braj, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan it.
From the ground (Gurudutt): People often ask me whether to go to Vrindavan or Haridwar and I tell them the truth: both are holy and neither is above the other. Haridwar is the sacred Ganga, the holy dip, the gateway to the mountains; ours is the sweet, joyful love of Krishna and Radha, the temples, the Holi and the raas. If your heart longs for the tenderness of Krishna, come to Braj; if it longs for the Ganga and the hills, go to Haridwar. And if you can, do both, for India's pilgrimages are one garland. Radhe Radhe.
What Vrindavan is
Vrindavan is the beating heart of Krishna devotion:
The town of Krishna's childhood. In Vrindavan, in the land of Braj, Krishna spent his childhood and played his beloved leelas, the flute, the raas with Radha and the gopis, the lifting of Govardhan; every lane is tied to his story.
A land of temples. Vrindavan holds thousands of temples, from the beloved Banke Bihari and the marble Prem Mandir to the world-famous ISKCON temple; nearby Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna and the whole of Braj complete the pilgrimage.
The Yamuna and joyful bhakti. On the sacred Yamuna, alive with kirtan, aartis and the greeting Radhe Radhe, Vrindavan is a place of joyful, loving devotion, dearest to those who love Krishna and Radha; its Holi and Janmashtami are world-famous.
See the banke bihari temple, prem mandir vrindavan and iskcon temple vrindavan, the krishna janmabhoomi in Mathura and the radha rani temple barsana of Radha.
What Haridwar is
Haridwar is one of the holiest cities of India, on the sacred Ganga and is revered with the deepest devotion:
A city of the Ganga. Haridwar, in Uttarakhand, is where the sacred Ganga leaves the Himalayas and enters the plains; it is one of the seven holiest cities of Hinduism, the Sapta Puri and a holy dip in the Ganga here is deeply auspicious.
The Ganga Aarti and the Kumbh. Its great Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, the ghat of the Lord's footstep, is one of the most beautiful sights in India and Haridwar is one of the four cities of the Kumbh Mela, the greatest gathering on earth.
A gateway to the Himalayas. Haridwar is the gateway to the Himalayas, to nearby Rishikesh, the yoga capital and to the Char Dham of the mountains, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri; it is the start of the great Himalayan pilgrimage.
The key differences
In short, the two differ in a few clear ways:
The deity and devotion. Vrindavan is above all about Krishna and Radha, the loving Vaishnav bhakti; Haridwar is about the sacred Ganga and the wider Hindu faith, the holy river and the pilgrimage to the mountains.
The river. Vrindavan is on the Yamuna, beloved of Krishna; Haridwar is on the Ganga, the holiest of rivers. Both have beautiful evening river aartis, the Yamuna aarti in Braj and the great Ganga Aarti at Haridwar.
The region and feel. Vrindavan lies in the plains of Braj, in Uttar Pradesh, a joyful, temple-filled town of Krishna; Haridwar lies at the foot of the Himalayas, in Uttarakhand, a sacred, ancient river-city and a gateway to the hills.
Which should you choose?
Neither is greater; the right choice depends on what your heart seeks:
Choose Vrindavan if. You long for the sweet, joyful love of Krishna and Radha, the temples and kirtan, the leelas and the festivals of Holi, Janmashtami and Radhashtami; if the tender devotion of Braj calls you, come to Vrindavan and Mathura.
Choose Haridwar if. You long for the sacred Ganga, a holy dip and the great Ganga Aarti or you are bound for the Himalayas, Rishikesh and the Char Dham; if the holy river and the mountain pilgrimage call you, go to Haridwar.
Choose both if you can. Many devout travellers visit both, for they are two faces of India's devotion, the Yamuna and the Ganga, Krishna's love and the holy river; together they make a fuller pilgrimage.
Can you visit both?
Yes and many do, for both lie in north India, about 400 km apart, roughly six to seven hours by road or a train journey. A common pilgrimage joins Haridwar and Rishikesh in the Uttarakhand hills with Vrindavan, Mathura and Braj in the plains, sometimes with Delhi or Agra in between; so you can bathe in the Ganga and see its aarti at Haridwar and feel the love of Krishna and the Yamuna aarti in Braj, on one journey. As Braj lies towards the plains and Haridwar towards the hills, our dehradun to vrindavan distance guide covers the Uttarakhand-to-Braj route, following the Yamuna from her Himalayan source to Krishna's land.
How to visit Vrindavan, best time and tips
If Krishna's Braj is where your heart leads, here is how to experience it:
The essentials of Braj. In Vrindavan, see Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show, the ISKCON temple and the grove of Nidhivan; in nearby Mathura, the Krishna Janmabhoomi and the Yamuna ghats; and the wider Braj of Barsana, Nandgaon, Govardhan and Gokul.
The Yamuna aarti. Do not miss the evening Yamuna aarti at the ghats of Mathura and Vrindavan, Braj's own beautiful river worship, dear like the Ganga Aarti of Haridwar.
Best time and tips. October to March is the most pleasant season; in the old towns, cars are kept out of the lanes, so take an e-rickshaw for the temples and give Braj time, for it is felt with the heart.
See the braj yamuna ghats and leela sites for the Yamuna aarti and our how to commute in vrindavan and mathura vrindavan temple timings guides for planning.
