Why is Vrindavan famous? The short answer
The short answer is that Vrindavan is famous as the town where Lord Krishna spent his childhood and played his divine leelas and as the beating heart of Krishna devotion in India and the world. It is one of the holiest towns of Hinduism, a land of thousands of temples and of the eternal love of Radha and Krishna, where the very air seems soaked in bhakti. The name comes from Vrinda, the sacred Tulsi and the vanaor forests, where Krishna once played. Today it draws millions of pilgrims and seekers and its lanes ring day and night with kirtan and the greeting Radhe Radhe. To experience its fame for yourself, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can take you to its temples and its heart.
From the ground (Gurudutt): People ask me why Vrindavan is so famous and I tell them: come and feel it, for words cannot hold it. This is where Kanhaiya played as a child, where he loved Radha, where he lifted Govardhan and danced the raas; every lane, every tree, every grain of dust here remembers him. That is why pilgrims come from every corner of the earth. It is not the buildings, it is the love. Come with an open heart and Vrindavan will show you why it is famous. Radhe Radhe.
The town of Krishna's childhood
The first and greatest reason for Vrindavan's fame is Krishna himself:
Where Krishna grew up. Born in Mathura and raised in his infancy at Gokul, Krishna spent his childhood and youth in and around Vrindavan and it is here that his most beloved leelas, his divine pastimes, unfolded.
The beloved leelas. Here Krishna played his flute and danced the raas with the gopis; stole the fresh butter as the makhan-chor; lifted the Govardhan hill to shelter Braj; and played among the groves and the Yamuna, the stories that fill the hearts of his devotees.
A land steeped in his memory. Every grove, ghat and lane of Vrindavan is tied to a leela of Krishna, so that to walk here is to walk through his story; this is what makes it holy above almost any other place.
The story begins at the krishna janmabhoomi in nearby Mathura and the leela of the lifted hill at govardhan hill is among the most beloved.
A land of a thousand temples
Vrindavan is famous as a town of temples, thousands of them, ancient and modern:
Thousands of temples. Vrindavan is said to hold thousands of temples, from tiny shrines in the lanes to vast complexes, so that it is often called a town of temples; wherever you turn, there is a place of worship.
The beloved and the grand. Among them are the most cherished Banke Bihari; the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show; the serene ISKCON Krishna-Balaram temple, known across the world; and the ancient Goswami temples of the sixteenth century.
A living devotion. These are not museums but living temples, alive with darshan, aarti and kirtan from before dawn to night, so the whole town pulses with worship.
See the banke bihari temple, the prem mandir vrindavan and the iskcon temple vrindavan among the most famous.
The heart of Krishna devotion
Beyond its temples, Vrindavan is famous as the spiritual heart of Krishna devotionor bhakti:
The centre of bhakti. Vrindavan is revered as the very centre of loving devotion to Krishna, the place towards which the hearts of his devotees turn; for many, it is the holiest ground on earth.
Known across the world. Through the ISKCON movement, the Hare Krishna tradition, Vrindavan is known and loved around the world, drawing devotees and seekers from every land to its temples and saints.
The saints and the sadhus. Vrindavan has been home to great saints and sages through the centuries, from the Goswamis to the modern masters and its lanes are full of sadhus and pilgrims lost in devotion.
The eternal love of Radha and Krishna
Vrindavan is famous above all as the land of the divine love of Radha and Krishna:
The land of Radha and Krishna. Vrindavan is the very land of the eternal, divine love of Radha and Krishna, the highest ideal of love in the tradition; here their love is remembered and worshipped in every temple and song.
Radhe Radhe. So dear is Radha to Vrindavan that the common greeting here is not a hello but Radhe Radhe, her name; the whole town is devoted to her and to the divine couple.
The love that draws the world. It is this love, tender and infinite, that gives Vrindavan its sweetness and draws devotees; the town is, in a sense, a hymn to the love of Radha and Krishna.
Radha's own village is Barsana; see the radha rani temple barsana for the beloved of Krishna.
Nidhivan and the raas leela
One of the most famous and mysterious of all Vrindavan's fames is Nidhivan and the raas leela. Nidhivan is an ancient, sacred grove of low, twisting trees, believed to be where Krishna dances the raas, his divine dance of love, with Radha and the gopis each night; it is held that no one may stay in Nidhivan after dark and its mystery is deeply loved. The raas leela, the eternal dance, is one of the sweetest of Vrindavan's beliefs and the seva kunj vrindavan and Nidhivan are its most sacred grounds. The braj yamuna ghats and leela sites hold more of the leela sites along the Yamuna.
The festivals of Vrindavan
Vrindavan is famous for its magnificent festivals, celebrated with a joy found nowhere else:
Holi. The Braj Holi is world-famous, the most joyous festival of colour; from the Lathmar Holi of Barsana to the flower Holi at Banke Bihari, the festival of colours is at its most magical in Krishna's land.
Janmashtami. Krishna's birthday is celebrated with great splendour across Braj and Vrindavan and Mathura fill with pilgrims and midnight rejoicing.
Radhashtami and more. Radha's appearance day, Radhashtami and the many festivals of the year, from Jhulan to Govardhan Puja, keep Vrindavan alive with celebration through the seasons.
Why Vrindavan is so beloved and how to experience it
In the end, what makes Vrindavan famous is not any one thing but its living, joyful devotion:
A living, joyful devotion. More than its temples or stories, it is the atmosphere of Vrindavan, the kirtan, the pilgrims, the greeting of Radhe Radhe, the sweetness in the air, that makes it unlike anywhere else and draws the world.
How to experience it. To feel Vrindavan's fame, walk its temple lanes, attend an evening aarti, hear the kirtan, see the Prem Mandir light show and give yourself time; it is a place to feel, not only to see.
Best with an open heart. Vrindavan rewards those who come with an open, unhurried heart above all; it is the devotion, more than the sights, that stays with you.
