Three days in Mathura and Vrindavan: an overview
Two days are enough to see the core of Mathura and Vrindavan, but three days let you see them well and reach the wider Braj without rushing, taking in Gokul, Govardhan and the villages of Radha and Krishna. The plan below gives Day 1 to the temple town of Vrindavan, Day 2 to Mathura, the birthplace and nearby Gokul, of Krishna's infancy and Day 3 to the western Braj of Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon. It is a full, unhurried pilgrimage that follows Krishna's story across his own land; and if you would like it all planned, driven and guided, a mathura vrindavan tour package with Experience My India can arrange the whole three days.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Three days is my favourite length for Braj, because you can breathe. Day one, lose yourself in Vrindavan's temples; day two, bow at the Janmabhoomi and cross to the quiet sands of Gokul; day three, walk a little of Govardhan and climb to Radha Rani at Barsana. Start each morning early, before the temples close at midday, keep the evenings for the Yamuna aarti and rest at night. Come with an open heart and these three days will stay with you always. Radhe Radhe. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
Day 1: Vrindavan, the town of temples
Begin in Vrindavan, the town of Krishna's childhood and the beating heart of Braj devotion, dense with beloved temples:
Morning: Banke Bihari and the old temples. Start early with the beloved Banke Bihari before the crowds, then wander the old-town lanes to the ancient Goswami temples, Radha Raman, Radha Damodar and Madan Mohan among them, the historic heart of Vrindavan.
Midday: ISKCON and rest. Visit the serene ISKCON Krishna-Balaram temple, with its round-the-clock kirtan and rest through the midday hours when many temples close.
Afternoon: Prem Mandir and Nidhivan. See the vast marble Prem Mandir and the mysterious grove of Nidhivan and Seva Kunj, the raas-leela sites, as the day cools.
Evening: the Yamuna aarti. End at Keshi Ghat on the Yamuna for the beautiful evening aarti, with the lamps floating on the river.
See the banke bihari temple, prem mandir vrindavan, iskcon temple vrindavan and seva kunj vrindavan pages and the braj yamuna ghats and leela sites for the Keshi Ghat aarti.
Day 2: Mathura and Gokul
Day 2 turns to Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, about 14 km away and across the Yamuna to Gokul, the village of his infancy:
Morning: the Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish. Begin at the sacred Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace, then the grand Dwarkadhish temple in the old city; remember that phones and bags are not allowed inside the Janmabhoomi.
Late morning: the Mathura Museum. See the Government Museum, famed for the ancient Mathura school of art, before the midday closing of the temples.
Afternoon: Gokul and Raman Reti. Cross the Yamuna to Gokul, the village of Krishna's infancy, with the Nand Bhavan and the soft sacred sands of Raman Reti, quieter and gentler than the temple towns.
Evening: the Vishram Ghat aarti. Return to Mathura for the grand evening Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat, one of the loveliest sights in Braj.
See the krishna janmabhoomi, dwarkadhish temple and gokul mandir pages; our distance from mathura to gokul guide covers the Gokul leg.
Day 3: Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon
Day 3 goes into the western Braj, to the sacred hill and the villages of the divine couple:
Morning: Govardhan. Begin at the sacred Govardhan hill, worshipped as Giriraj, the hill Krishna lifted; walk a part of the 21 km parikrama or the Mukharvind darshan and see Kusum Sarovar and Radha Kund. Remember the hill is circled, never climbed.
Midday: on to Barsana. Continue west to Barsana, Radha Rani's village and climb to the hilltop Shriji temple, with fine views over Braj; palanquins are available for those who cannot manage the steps.
Afternoon: Nandgaon. Visit nearby Nandgaon, Krishna's boyhood village, about 8 km from Barsana, with the Nand Bhavan on its hill, completing the villages of Radha and Krishna.
Evening: return. Return to your base in Vrindavan or Mathura in the evening, the three days of Braj complete.
See the govardhan hill, kusum sarovar govardhan, radha rani temple barsana and shri nand mahal nandgaon pages for the western Braj.
How to adapt the plan
The three-day plan is easily shaped to your time and taste:
If you have only two days. Keep Day 1 in Vrindavan and Day 2 in Mathura and add Govardhan or Barsana as time allows; two days cover the core of the twin cities well.
If you have four days or more. Add a day for the wider Braj, of Gokul and Mahavan, Radha Kund and the deeper Govardhan parikrama or for a full day at Govardhan; the more days, the less the rush.
To add Agra and the Taj. Agra lies about 70 km from Braj, so a fourth day or a longer trip, easily adds the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri to the pilgrimage.
Our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary helps shape the days, our mathura vrindavan tour covers the core over a guided trip and the braj 84 kos yatra is for the whole of Braj; to add Agra, our agra mathura vrindavan tour package pairs the Taj with Braj.
Where to stay and getting around
For three days you will need a base and a way around:
Where to stay. Vrindavan is the favourite base for its temple-town atmosphere and the widest choice of pilgrim stays; Mathura suits those who want the railway connectivity. A stay near the highway between the two works well for a car-based trip.
Getting around. A car with a driver is the most practical way to link the sites over three days, with e-rickshaws for the old-town lanes of Vrindavan and Mathura, which cars cannot enter.
Plan around the temples. Most temples open in the morning, close for a few hours at midday and open again in the evening, so plan darshan for the mornings and evenings and rest or travel at midday.
Our 4 star hotels in vrindavan guide helps with where to stay, our how to commute in vrindavan guide with getting around and our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide with the darshan hours.
Best time to visit and tips
October to March is the most pleasant season for the three days, with cool, comfortable weather for the temples and the ghats.
Start each day early to reach the temples before the midday closing and keep the evenings for the Yamuna aarti.
At the Krishna Janmabhoomi, phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside, so plan to leave them with your vehicle.
For the Govardhan parikrama, start early and walk barefoot if you can; remember Giriraj is circled, never climbed.
Book accommodation ahead, especially for Janmashtami, Radhashtami and Holi, when Braj fills and rates rise sharply.
We plan and drive the full three-day Mathura, Vrindavan and Braj itinerary for you, with the stays, the temple darshan and the e-rickshaw arranged and a Braj-born guide who knows the towns and their stories. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free. Our mathura vrindavan tour covers the core of the twin cities, extendable to three days with the wider Braj and the braj 84 kos yatra the whole of Braj; message me on WhatsApp at +91-7302265809 to plan your three days.
