Nagpur to Vrindavan distance: an overview
From Nagpur, the Orange City in the heart of India, the land of Krishna lies about 901 km to the north, roughly 17 hours by road, largely on NH 44, the great north-south highway, running up through Jhansi, Gwalior and Agra towards Braj. Being so long a journey, most travellers from Nagpur go by train, for Nagpur is one of the largest railway junctions in India, with excellent, fast trains to Mathura Junction or by air; the road, over two days, is for those who wish to make the overland pilgrimage. It is a long journey from the centre of the country to the heart of Krishna devotion; and if you would rather leave the long journey to a Braj local, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan it and meet you at Mathura Junction or Delhi.
From the ground (Gurudutt): My Nagpur guests are among the best-connected of all, for your city is the great railway heart of India, with fine trains running straight to Mathura Junction; I always suggest the train over the long drive. If you must drive, it is about 17 hours up NH 44, so break it over two days, perhaps at Jhansi or Gwalior. Or fly to Delhi and let me bring you the last stretch. From the heart of the country to the heart of Krishna, Braj awaits. Radhe Radhe.
Nagpur to Vrindavan: the routes
For those who drive, there are three main routes, largely on NH 44. The options, with approximate distance and time:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via NH 44 (fastest) | About 901 km | About 17 hr 18 min |
Via NH 46 | About 961 km | About 17 hr 43 min |
Via NH 539 and NH 44 | About 967 km | About 21 hr 36 min |
The direct NH 44 route is the fastest and shortest at about 901 km and about 17 hours, running through Jhansi, Gwalior and Agra; the NH 46 route is a little longer and the NH 539 route the longest and slowest. NH 44 is the natural spine of the journey. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off and remember this is a two-day drive.
Vrindavan to Nagpur: the return
The return, Vrindavan to Nagpur, is much the same. The options:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via NH 44 (fastest) | About 900 km | About 17 hr 1 min |
Via NH 46 | About 961 km | About 17 hr 7 min |
Via NH 44 and NH 547 | About 972 km | About 20 hr 30 min |
The direct NH 44 route is again the fastest for the return, at about 900 km and about 17 hours; the NH 46 route is a little longer but similar in time. As with the outward drive, treat these as guide figures and check live traffic and plan a two-day journey.
The route via NH 44 through the heart of India
The road that carries this journey is above all NH 44, up through the heart of India:
The great north-south highway. NH 44 is the longest national highway in India, running the length of the country; from Nagpur it carries the journey north through Jhansi, Gwalior and Agra towards Braj, so much of the drive is a long run up this great road.
Heritage on the way. Jhansi, with its fort; Gwalior, with its mighty fort; and Agra, with the Taj Mahal, all lie on the route, so the long drive can be broken with a touch of heritage and an overnight at Jhansi or Gwalior is a natural way to split the two days.
A few practical notes. The route is a toll road in stretches, so keep your FASTag ready; the roads are good main highways and the drive, though long, is straightforward, a steady run north.
Where the road reaches the Braj end near Agra, our agra to vrindavan distance guide covers the final leg towards Mathura and Vrindavan.
Best ways to travel: train, air and road
For a journey of this length, Nagpur gives you excellent choices and the train is usually the best:
By train (the best choice). Nagpur is one of the largest railway junctions in India, at the very crossing of the great trunk lines, with excellent, frequent, fast trains, including premier services, straight to Mathura Junction, the railway station for Vrindavan, about 14 km away; for a journey of this length the train is by far the most restful and convenient way and a great favourite for Nagpur travellers. Check current trains on IRCTC.
By air (fastest). Nagpur has an airport with flights towards Delhi; fly to Delhi and drive the last stretch to Braj, about 3 to 3.5 hours, reaching Vrindavan far sooner than by road. Check current flights and we can meet you at Delhi.
By car (for the overland pilgrim). About 17 hours on NH 44 through Jhansi, Gwalior and Agra, best as a two-day drive with an overnight, perhaps at Gwalior; long but on a good main road. Fares vary, so ask us for a live quote.
For arriving by train, our tundla to vrindavan distance guide covers the region's railheads and if you fly to Delhi and drive, our delhi to mathura vrindavan distance taxi cost guide covers that last leg.
Should you drive it
By road, honestly, only if you wish to make the overland pilgrimage. At about 17 to 21 hours each way, a same-day return is impossible and even one way is a two-day journey; for most, the train or a flight is far better. The sensible plans:
Take the train or fly. The Nagpur trains reach Mathura Junction directly and comfortably, the best way of all, given Nagpur's superb rail connections; or fly to Delhi and drive the short last leg to Braj. Either is far easier than the long drive.
A two-day drive. If you drive, break the journey with an overnight, perhaps at Gwalior or Jhansi on NH 44 and give the next day to the last stretch and darshan.
A wider pilgrimage. Fold Braj into a longer trip that also takes in Agra and the Taj, near the Braj end or Gwalior and Jhansi on the way, for a fuller journey.
What to see in Braj, best time and tips
When you reach Braj, the great sights await:
In Mathura and Vrindavan. See the Krishna Janmabhoomi at the birthplace, the Dwarkadhish temple and the Yamuna ghats in Mathura; and the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show and the serene ISKCON temple in Vrindavan.
Best time. October to March is the most pleasant season for the journey and the darshan, with cool, comfortable weather; the great festivals are magnificent but very crowded.
Tips. Take the train or plan a two-day drive, so you reach the temples fresh; keep your FASTag active for the tolls; and in the old towns, park at the edge and take an e-rickshaw for the temple lanes.
See the krishna janmabhoomi, dwarkadhish temple and braj yamuna ghats and leela sites in Mathura and the banke bihari temple, prem mandir vrindavan and iskcon temple vrindavan in Vrindavan.
