Mathura tourist places: an overview
Mathura, on the banks of the Yamuna, is the birthplace of Lord Krishna and one of the seven holiest cities of India, a place where every lane and ghat carries a story of the Lord. Its tourist places are chiefly its temples, ghats and forts, gathered in the old city and easily seen in a day. This guide walks you through them all, with what to see, the timings and how to plan. If you would like it arranged and driven for you, we run it as a mathura vrindavan tour with a local guide. For the city's history and layout, see our mathura city guide and the mathura vrindavan city map.
From the ground (Gurudutt): Mathura rewards those who slow down. Most visitors rush through the Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish and leave, but the soul of the city is by the river, so I always keep the evening for Vishram Ghat, when the Yamuna aarti begins and the lamps float on the water; it is unforgettable. Plan around the afternoon closing, do the Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish in the morning, rest and eat in the heat of the day and come to the ghats for the evening. Leave your phone and bag behind for the Janmabhoomi, where security is strict. And do not leave without a box of fresh Mathura peda.
The Krishna Janmabhoomi
The krishna janmabhoomi temple, the Shri Krishna Janmasthan, is the holiest site in Mathura, revered as the very prison cell where Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva. The complex holds the Keshav Dev temple and the sacred garbha griha and draws pilgrims from across the world, above all at Janmashtami. Entry and darshan are free, but it is a high-security site, so phones, bags and cameras are usually not allowed inside; carry only a valid ID. We present the birthplace with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
The Dwarkadhish Temple
The dwarkadhish temple mathura, near the Yamuna in the old city, is the largest and most vibrant temple of Mathura, built in 1814 and known for its rich paintings, its lively festivals and the swings and flower decorations of the seasons. It is a short walk from Vishram Ghat and the two are usually seen together. So the Dwarkadhish is the main city temple, close to the river. We present it with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
Vishram Ghat and the Yamuna ghats
The heart of Mathura's riverfront is vishram ghat mathura, the chief and holiest of the city's twenty-five ghats, where by the tradition Krishna rested after slaying the tyrant Kansa. Pilgrims take a boat on the Yamuna and offer diyas to the river and the evening Yamuna aarti here, with its circling lamps and floating lights, is one of the most beautiful sights in all of Mathura. The other ghats stretch along the river on either side. So Vishram Ghat is the soul of the riverfront, above all at the evening aarti. We present the sacred ghat with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
Kans Qila, the Gita Mandir and the museum
Beyond the birthplace and the ghats, Mathura holds more to see. The kans qila mathura, the historic fort of Kansa on the riverfront, recalls the story of Krishna's tyrant uncle. The birla mandir mathura, also called the Gita Mandir, is a serene marble temple on the edge of the city, with the whole Bhagavad Gita inscribed on its pillars. And the Government Museum holds the world-famous sculpture of the ancient Mathura school, a treasure for those who love art and history. Nearby lie Potra Kund, the sacred stepped tank and other old shrines.
So the fort, the Gita Mandir and the museum round out a Mathura day. So they show the city's history as well as its devotion. We present them with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
Nearby: Gokul, Mahavan and Govardhan
With more time, the Braj around Mathura opens up. gokul barsana nandgaon covers Gokul and Mahavan, on the far bank about 15 km away, where the infant Krishna was raised by Nanda and Yashoda, along with the villages of Radha and Krishna. govardhan hill, the sacred Giriraj that Krishna lifted, lies about 23 km away, with its 21 km parikrama. And Vrindavan, the town of Krishna's childhood, is only about 15 km from Mathura, usually seen on the same trip.
So Gokul, Govardhan and Vrindavan are the closest excursions from Mathura. So a second day lets you take them in. We present these sacred places with the reverence of the tradition, held with faith and recounted with reverence.
How to plan your Mathura visit
One day covers the city: the Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish in the morning, the fort, Gita Mandir or museum in the day and Vishram Ghat for the evening aarti; a second day adds Gokul, Govardhan or Vrindavan. Because the temples close in the afternoon, do darshan in the morning and evening and keep the middle of the day for rest and food. Our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide has the seasonal hours and our vrindavan mathura itinerary turns it into a day-by-day plan.
We arrange Mathura and Braj tours covering these places, with a comfortable vehicle, a route timed around the darshan and aarti hours and a knowledgeable local guide, usually with Vrindavan. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free at the temples; our one-day vrindavan mathura tour covers the highlights and our two-day mathura vrindavan tour the twin cities at an unhurried pace.
