Jhansi to Mathura distance: an overview
From Jhansi, the historic fort city of Bundelkhand in southern Uttar Pradesh, the birthplace of Krishna at Mathura lies about 286 km to the north, roughly six hours by road on NH 44, the great north-south highway, running through Gwalior and Agra towards Braj. Being a medium-long haul, it is doable in a long day, with Gwalior and Agra on the way for those who wish to add a touch of heritage. As Jhansi is one of the great railway junctions of India, the train to Mathura Junction is quick, restful and a great favourite. This guide gives the routes both ways and how to travel them, with Vrindavan, the town of Krishna's childhood, about 14 km beyond Mathura; and if you would like the drive, the darshan and the e-rickshaw arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan it.
From the ground (Gurudutt): For my guests from Jhansi, you are blessed with one of the finest railway junctions in the land, so I always suggest the train straight to Mathura Junction; it is quick and easy. If you drive, it is about six hours up NH 44 through Gwalior and Agra, a long but good day and you can add the Taj on the way. From the land of the brave Rani to the land of Krishna, come with an open heart and Braj will welcome you. Radhe Radhe.
Jhansi to Mathura: the routes
The routes from Jhansi to Mathura, with approximate distance and time:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via NH 44 (fastest) | About 286 km | About 6 hr |
Via the Balaji Unnao Road and NH 44 | About 310 km | About 7 hr 2 min |
Via NH 44 and NH 123 | About 320 km | About 7 hr 3 min |
The direct NH 44 route is the fastest and shortest at about 286 km and about six hours, running through Gwalior and Agra; the other routes are a little longer. NH 44 is the natural, direct road from Jhansi to Braj. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.
Mathura to Jhansi: the return
The return, Mathura to Jhansi, is much the same, with an expressway option. The routes:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via NH 44 (fastest) | About 287 km | About 6 hr 6 min |
Via the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and the Bundelkhand Expressway | About 438 km | About 6 hr 28 min |
Via NH 44 and the Balaji Unnao Road | About 312 km | About 7 hr 2 min |
The direct NH 44 route is again the fastest for the return, at about 287 km; interestingly, the route by the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and the Bundelkhand Expressway, though much longer at about 438 km, is only a little slower thanks to the fast expressways. Treat these as guide figures and check live traffic before you leave.
The route via NH 44 and the Bundelkhand Expressway
The journey between Jhansi and Braj can go two ways and both are worth knowing:
The direct road, NH 44 through Gwalior and Agra. NH 44 is the longest national highway in India; from Jhansi it runs north through Gwalior and Agra to Braj, the fastest and shortest way at about 286 km, largely a straight run up this great road.
The expressway loop, via the Bundelkhand and Agra-Lucknow Expressways. An alternative, especially on the return, loops by the Bundelkhand Expressway and the Agra-Lucknow Expressway; though much longer in distance, at about 438 km, the fast, smooth expressways make it only a little slower and it avoids the older road.
A few practical notes. Both routes are toll roads in stretches, so keep your FASTag ready; Gwalior and Agra on the NH 44 route make fine stops, adding heritage to the pilgrimage.

Best ways to travel: train and road
For this medium-long haul, Jhansi gives you good choices and the train is often the best:
By train (the best choice). Jhansi is one of the great railway junctions of India, on the main lines, with excellent, fast trains, including premier services, straight to Mathura Junction, the railway station for Mathura and Vrindavan; for a journey of this length the train is by far the most restful and convenient way and a great favourite for Jhansi travellers. Check current trains on IRCTC.
By car (flexible). About six hours on NH 44 through Gwalior and Agra, doable in a long day, with the freedom to stop at Gwalior and the Taj on the way; the most flexible for the temples. Fares vary, so ask us for a live quote.
By bus. Buses run from Jhansi towards Gwalior, Agra and Mathura; the budget option, though slower and less direct than a car or the train.
