For the many pilgrims who arrive in Braj by train, the journey often begins at Mathura Junction and heads first for Prem Mandir, the luminous marble temple that is one of Vrindavan's great wonders. The distance is about 12 to 22 km, depending on the route and the drive takes roughly 40 minutes. The routes

There are three main ways to drive from Mathura Junction to Prem Mandir. The options, with approximate distance and time:

The route by the Bhuteshwar Road and the Mathura-Vrindavan Marg is the shortest at about 12 km, through the old-city roads; the NH 44 route is a little longer at about 17.5 km but simple and much the same in time. All three take about 40 minutes. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.

About Mathura Junction

Mathura Junction is the main railway station of the Braj region and the arrival point for most train pilgrims:

• The main railhead. Mathura Junction is a major junction on the principal lines, well connected across India, so the great majority of pilgrims arriving by train reach Braj here and continue to Vrindavan and its temples by road.

• In Mathura city. The station is in Mathura, about 14 km from Vrindavan, so from it you travel out to Prem Mandir and the other Vrindavan temples; Mathura's own sites, the Janmabhoomi and the ghats, are close by too.

• Getting a ride. Taxis, autos and e-rickshaws are available at and around the station; agree the fare before setting off or arrange a pickup in advance for an easy arrival.

About Prem Mandir

Prem Mandir, the destination, is one of the loveliest sights in Vrindavan:

The Temple of Love. The prem mandir vrindavan is a vast two-storey temple of white marble set in a garden campus, built by Jagadguru Kripalu Ji Maharaj and carved with scenes from the lives of Radha-Krishna and Sita-Ram.

• Loveliest after dark. It is at its most beautiful in the evening, when the marble is bathed in changing colours and a musical fountain plays, drawing crowds every night; the light show is the great draw, so many time their visit for after dark.

• Easy to reach and visit. Prem Mandir has its own parking and is set a little apart from the crowded old-town lanes, so it is one of the easier Vrindavan temples to reach by vehicle.

How to travel from the station to Prem Mandir

From Mathura Junction, the choices for the short transfer are simple:

• By taxi or cab (easiest). A taxi or cab covers the 12 to 22 km in about 40 minutes, taking you right to the Prem Mandir parking; the most comfortable way, especially with luggage. Fares vary, so agree it beforehand or ask us for a quote.

• By auto-rickshaw. Autos run from the station towards Vrindavan and can take you to Prem Mandir, cheaper than a taxi; agree the fare first, as first-time visitors are often quoted high.

• By e-rickshaw. E-rickshaws serve the shorter hops and the Vrindavan lanes; for the full distance from the station a taxi or auto is quicker, but an e-rickshaw covers the local stretch to the temple.

Combining with other Vrindavan temples

Prem Mandir is usually the start of a fuller Vrindavan darshan:

• With Banke Bihari and ISKCON. From Prem Mandir, the beloved Banke Bihari in the old town and the serene ISKCON Krishna-Balaram temple are both close and easily added to the day.

• With the Yamuna and Mathura. The Keshi Ghat on the Yamuna, and, back near the station, the Krishna Janmabhoomi and the Mathura ghats, complete a fuller trip.

• A Vrindavan day. Many arriving pilgrims see Prem Mandir first, then the other temples, ending with the evening at Prem Mandir or the Yamuna aarti; a day covers Vrindavan well.

Best time to visit and tips

• Evening is the best time to reach Prem Mandir, for the marble light show and the musical fountain after dark, so plan your arrival and transfer for the later afternoon.

• October to March is the most pleasant season overall, with cool, comfortable weather for the temples.

• Agree the taxi, auto or e-rickshaw fare before setting off from the station, as first-time visitors are often quoted high.

• For an easy arrival, especially at night or with luggage, arrange a pickup from Mathura Junction in advance.
