Mathura to Taj Mahal Distance: Routes and How to Travel

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·9 September 2026

Mathura to Taj Mahal Distance

Quick Answer

The distance from Mathura to the Taj Mahal is about 62 km by the fastest route, and the drive takes roughly an hour and a half, most directly on NH 44 joined to NH 19. A route by the Yamuna Expressway is longer at about 85 km but smooth. It is an easy day trip, pairing the birthplace of Krishna at Mathura with the wonder of the world at Agra, one of the most rewarding short journeys in north India. The return, Taj Mahal to Mathura, is much the same, about 60 km. All times are approximate and depend on traffic; note the Taj is closed on Fridays.

Mathura to Taj Mahal distance: an overview

From Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, the Taj Mahal at Agra lies about 62 km to the south-east, an easy hour and a half by road. It makes one of the most rewarding short journeys in north India, pairing the living devotion of a pilgrimage city with the marble splendour of the wonder of the world. Most travellers make the trip by car, on NH 44 and NH 19 or by the smooth Yamuna Expressway and many combine it with Vrindavan for the fuller circuit of heritage and pilgrimage. This guide gives the routes both ways and how to travel them; and if you would like the Taj and Braj planned and driven together, a mathura vrindavan tour package with Experience My India can arrange it.

From the ground (Gurudutt): Many of my guests want to pair the Taj with Braj and it is a lovely thing to do, only about an hour and a half between them. I tell them: see the Taj in the cool of the morning, remembering it is closed on Fridays and come to Mathura and Vrindavan for the afternoon and the evening aarti. Monument and temple, marble and Krishna, in one gentle day. Take the NH 19 road for the shorter way or the expressway for the smoother; either is easy. Radhe Radhe. See our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package  or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Mathura to Taj Mahal: the routes

There are three main ways to drive from Mathura to the Taj Mahal. The options, with approximate distance and time:

Route

Distance

Time (approx)

Via NH 44 and NH 19 (fastest)

About 61.8 km

About 1 hr 24 min

Via Kailash Marg

About 66.1 km

About 1 hr 50 min

Via NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway

About 85.6 km

About 1 hr 33 min

The NH 44 and NH 19 route is the fastest and shortest at about 62 km and under an hour and a half; the Yamuna Expressway route is longer in distance at about 85 km, as it loops out, but smooth and only a little slower. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.

Taj Mahal to Mathura: the return

The return, Taj Mahal to Mathura, is much the same. The options:

Route

Distance

Time (approx)

Via NH 19 and NH 44 (fastest)

About 60.7 km

About 1 hr 29 min

Via NH 21, NH 509, NH 19 and NH 44

About 64.4 km

About 1 hr 39 min

Via the Manpur-Sauj Road and the Yamuna Expressway

About 84.2 km

About 1 hr 30 min

The NH 19 and NH 44 route is again the fastest and shortest for the return, at about 60 km. As with the outward drive, treat these as guide figures and check live traffic before you leave.

Which route to choose

  • For speed, NH 44 and NH 19. The fastest and shortest way, about 62 km and under an hour and a half; the route most travellers take between Mathura and the Taj.

  • For a smooth drive, the Yamuna Expressway. Longer in distance at about 85 km, as it loops out towards the expressway, but smooth and fast; a comfortable choice and useful if you are coming from or going on to the Delhi side.

  • Either is an easy day trip. Both routes make the Taj an easy day trip from Mathura or Mathura an easy add-on to an Agra visit; a car with a driver lets you choose the clearer road on the day.

About the Taj Mahal

The destination needs little introduction, but a few practical notes help:

  • The wonder of the world. The Taj Mahal is the white marble mausoleum built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, one of the wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, of surpassing beauty.

  • Closed on Fridays. The Taj is closed to visitors on Fridays, when it is open only for prayers, so plan your trip for another day; its ticket is separate and paid and managed by the authorities.

  • Best early or late. It is loveliest in the soft light of early morning or the late afternoon; carry ID, check the current timings and rules and allow time for the security and the queues.

How to travel and combine with Vrindavan

For this short journey and the fuller circuit, the choices are simple:

  • By car (best). A car covers the 62 km in about an hour and a half, on NH 44 and NH 19 or the Yamuna Expressway, with the freedom to set your own pace; most travellers pair the Taj and Braj by road.

  • Combine with Vrindavan. Vrindavan, the town of Krishna's childhood, is only about 14 km from Mathura, so the Taj, Mathura and Vrindavan together make one of the finest short circuits in north India, pairing the marble monument with Krishna's birthplace and childhood over two or three days.

  • Add Fatehpur Sikri. On the way to or from Agra, the abandoned Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri is a rewarding addition for those with time.

Our agra to vrindavan distance guide covers the Agra to Vrindavan leg, our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary helps shape the days and in Vrindavan the banke bihari temple and prem mandir vrindavan await.

Best time to visit and tips

  • October to March is the most pleasant season for both the monument and the temples, with cool, comfortable weather.

  • The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays and its ticket is separate and paid, so plan around that and carry ID.

  • See the Taj in the cool early morning, then come to Mathura and Vrindavan for the afternoon and the evening Yamuna aarti.

  • At the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura, phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside, so plan to leave them with your vehicle.

  • Agree the taxi fare or the day-hire rate beforehand and allow time for the Taj's security, queues and parking.

We plan and drive the Mathura, Taj Mahal and Vrindavan journey, pairing the wonder of the world with the birthplace of Krishna, with a comfortable vehicle, the temple darshan and the e-rickshaw arranged and a Braj-born guide. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free at the temples and monument tickets separate. Our agra mathura vrindavan tour package covers Agra and Braj over three days, our mathura vrindavan tour the twin cities and the braj 84 kos yatra the whole of Braj. See the krishna janmabhoomi and dwarkadhish temple in Mathura; our delhi to mathura vrindavan distance taxi cost guide helps with fares, our how to commute in vrindavan guide with getting around and our mathura vrindavan temple timings guide with the darshan hours. "We had a wonderful family pilgrimage with the 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Govardhan Barsana Tour Package. The itinerary allowed us to experience the main temples of Mathura and Vrindavan along with Govardhan and Barsana. We especially enjoyed visiting Giriraj Govardhan, Radha Kund and the Radha Rani Temple in Barsana. Experience My India managed the transportation and routing very well, while Gurudutt ji was polite, knowledgeable and always ready to help. The trip felt spiritual without becoming too hectic."

"Our 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package was a peaceful and enjoyable family trip. Three days gave us enough time to experience Mathura and Vrindavan properly instead of rushing from one temple to another. We visited Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish Temple, Banke Bihari, ISKCON and Prem Mandir, and also had time to experience the devotional atmosphere around the Yamuna. Experience My India handled the arrangements smoothly, and Gurudutt ji was extremely helpful throughout the journey. We would definitely recommend this package for anyone who wants a relaxed Braj pilgrimage."
