Moradabad to Mathura distance: an overview
From Moradabad, the Brass City of western Uttar Pradesh, the birthplace of Krishna at Mathura lies about 201 to 273 km to the south-west, depending on the route, roughly five hours by road. The happy surprise is that the longer way is the faster: the route by NH 9 and the Yamuna Expressway, at about 273 km, uses the fast expressways to skirt Delhi and reaches Mathura in about 4 hr 49 min, while the shorter NH 509, at about 201 km, is slower on ordinary roads. Being a medium haul, it is comfortably done in a day, from Moradabad to Krishna's land. As Moradabad is a major railway junction, the train to Mathura Junction is also an option. This guide gives the routes both ways, with Vrindavan about 14 km beyond Mathura; and if you would like the drive, the darshan and the e-rickshaw arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan your day.
From the ground (Gurudutt): For my guests from Moradabad, I always give one tip: take the longer road. It sounds odd, but the NH 9 and Yamuna Expressway route, though more kilometres, is faster and smoother, for it uses the expressways to slip past Delhi, while the short NH 509 crawls on ordinary roads. So come by the expressway, about five hours, do the Mathura and Vrindavan temples and you have a fine day in Braj. Let me plan it for you. Radhe Radhe.
Moradabad to Mathura: the routes
The routes from Moradabad to Mathura, with approximate distance and time:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via NH 9 and the Yamuna Expressway (fastest) | About 273 km | About 4 hr 49 min |
Via NH 9, the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 | About 294 km | About 4 hr 54 min |
Via NH 509 (shortest) | About 201 km | About 5 hr 27 min |
The NH 9 and Yamuna Expressway route is the fastest at about 4 hr 49 min, though longer at about 273 km, using the expressways to skirt Delhi; the Eastern Peripheral Expressway route is similar; and the NH 509, though the shortest at about 201 km, is slower at about 5 hr 27 min on ordinary roads. So the longer expressway route is the quicker choice. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.
Mathura to Moradabad: the return
The return, Mathura to Moradabad, is much the same. The options:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via the Yamuna Expressway and NH 9 (fastest) | About 276 km | About 4 hr 48 min |
Via the Yamuna Expressway, NH 34 and NH 9 | About 272 km | About 4 hr 49 min |
Via NH 509 (shortest) | About 207 km | About 5 hr 36 min |
The Yamuna Expressway and NH 9 route is again the fastest for the return, at about 4 hr 48 min, though longer than the NH 509; as on the way out, the expressway route is the quicker choice despite the extra distance. Treat these as guide figures and check live traffic before you leave.
The routes: expressway versus direct
The key to the Moradabad to Braj journey is choosing the expressway route over the shorter direct road:
The expressway route (longer but faster). The route by NH 9 and the Yamuna Expressway, joined near Delhi by the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, uses fast, smooth expressways to skirt the capital and reach Braj; though about 273 km, it is the fastest at about 4 hr 49 min and the more comfortable drive.
The Eastern Peripheral Expressway. The Eastern Peripheral Expressway rings Delhi to the east, letting Moradabad travellers bypass the city's traffic and join the Yamuna Expressway towards Mathura; it is what makes the longer route faster.
The direct road (shorter but slower). The NH 509 is the shortest at about 201 km, but runs on ordinary roads through the towns, so it is slower at about 5 hr 27 min; it is the direct line, but the expressway route is quicker and easier.
Where the road reaches the Braj end, our agra to vrindavan distance guide covers the approach to Mathura and Vrindavan.
Best ways to travel: road and rail
For this medium haul, Moradabad gives you good choices:
By car (best). About five hours by the NH 9 and Yamuna Expressway route, doable in a day, with the freedom to see Vrindavan and Mathura together, only about 14 km apart; an easy day trip or an overnight for the wider Braj. Fares vary, so ask us for a live quote.
By train. Moradabad is a major railway junction on the main lines and trains connect it towards Mathura Junction, the station for both Mathura and Vrindavan; a restful option, though you may need to check connections, from where an auto or e-rickshaw takes you on. Check current trains on IRCTC.
By bus. Buses run from Moradabad towards Delhi and Mathura; the budget option, though slower and less direct than a car.
