Vrindavan and Govardhan: an overview

Of all the sites of Braj, few pairs are as central to a pilgrimage as Vrindavan and Govardhan. Vrindavan, about 22 km to the north-east, is the town of Krishna's childhood leelas, its lanes dense with beloved temples; Govardhan is the sacred hill he lifted upon his finger to shelter the people of Braj, worshipped not as a place but as the Lord himself, as Giriraj and circled by pilgrims on its great parikrama. Between them they hold the two sides of Braj devotion, the intimate darshan of the temples and the humbling walk around the hill and most pilgrims give them a day together. Vrindavan: the town of Krishna's childhood

Vrindavan is the beating heart of Braj devotion, the town where Krishna spent his childhood and played his eternal leelas and it holds thousands of temples:

• The beloved temples. Banke Bihari, the most beloved of all; the vast marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show; and the serene ISKCON Krishna-Balaram temple with its round-the-clock kirtan are the great draws.

• The old and the mysterious. The ancient Goswami temples in the lanes, the raas-leela groves of Nidhivan and Seva Kunj and the ghats of the Yamuna give Vrindavan its deep, old sanctity.

• The town of darshan. Vrindavan is above all a place of temple darshan and immersion, its narrow lanes alive with devotion, best explored on foot and by e-rickshaw.

Govardhan: the sacred hill Krishna lifted

Govardhan is one of the holiest places in all of Braj and its story is among the best-loved of Krishna's leelas:

• The Govardhan Lila. When the people of Braj set aside the worship of Indra, the god of rain, in favour of the hill that sustained them, Indra sent a furious storm; the young Krishna lifted the whole Govardhan hill upon his little finger and held it as an umbrella for seven days, sheltering all of Braj, until Indra bowed to him.

• Worshipped as Giriraj. Ever since, the hill itself is worshipped as Giriraj, the Lord in the form of the mountain; pilgrims do not climb it but walk reverently around it, for the hill is the deity.

• The sacred sites of the hill. Around Govardhan lie the Daan Ghati, Manasi Ganga, the Mukharvind at Jatipura, Kusum Sarovar and the sacred Radha Kund and Shyam Kund, each a holy stop on the parikrama.

The connection: the temples and the hill

Vrindavan and Govardhan complete each other in a Braj pilgrimage:

• Two sides of devotion. Vrindavan offers the intimate darshan of Krishna in his temples, close and sweet; Govardhan offers the humbling worship of the Lord as the very hill, walked around in parikrama, so the two together hold both the tenderness and the awe of Braj.

• Both of Krishna's leelas. Both belong to Krishna's childhood in Braj, Vrindavan of his play among the groves and the gopis, Govardhan of the great lila of the lifted hill, so seeing both tells more of the story.

• Close and easily paired. At about 22 km apart, the two are easily joined in a day and most Braj itineraries take in both, often with Mathura or Barsana added.

The Govardhan parikrama

The great act of devotion at Govardhan is the parikrama, the circling of the sacred hill:

• About 21 km around the hill. The full parikrama is about 21 km, walked barefoot by the devout, keeping Giriraj always on the right, past its many holy kunds and shrines; it takes several hours at a steady pace.

• Full or shorter options. Many pilgrims walk the full circuit, often starting before dawn; others do a shorter portion or the Mukharvind darshan at Jatipura or circle by cycle-rickshaw or car if they cannot walk it all.

• A humbling devotion. To walk around Giriraj, the Lord as the hill, is one of the most humbling and beloved acts of Braj pilgrimage and for many the heart of their journey.

How to visit both

Vrindavan and Govardhan are easily paired on a Braj day:

• Together in a day. Being about 22 km apart, the two are commonly visited together; give the Vrindavan temples the morning and Govardhan the later part of the day or the reverse if you wish to walk the parikrama at dawn.

• By car and on foot. A car covers the 22 km between them and the roads around Govardhan; within Vrindavan the old-town lanes are for e-rickshaws and feet and the Govardhan parikrama is walked or, in part, ridden.

• With the wider Braj. The pair combines naturally with Mathura or with Barsana and Nandgaon in the west, for a fuller Braj trip over two or more days.

Best time to visit and tips

• October to March is the most pleasant season for the temples and the parikrama, with cool, comfortable weather.

• Govardhan Puja and Annakut, just after Diwali and Guru Purnima are the great times at Govardhan, magnificent but very crowded.

• For the Govardhan parikrama, start before dawn, walk barefoot if you can and carry water; keep Giriraj always on your right.

• In Vrindavan, do the temples in the morning before the midday closing and remember cars stay out of the old-town lanes.

• Never climb the Govardhan hill; it is worshipped as the Lord and is circled, not climbed, in reverence.
