Mathura: the birthplace of Krishna

Mathura, on the banks of the Yamuna, is one of the seven holy cities of India and the birthplace of Lord Krishna, born in a prison cell to Devaki and Vasudeva. It is the oldest and most historic of the three towns, alive with temples, ghats and the daily rhythm of pilgrimage. The essentials of Mathura:

• The birthplace itself. The Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, with the sacred prison cell where the Lord is believed to have been born, is the heart of any visit to Mathura.

• The great temple. The Dwarkadhish temple, Krishna as the king of Dwarka, is Mathura's most vibrant temple, full of colour and devotion.

• The river. Vishram Ghat, the chief of Mathura's ghats on the Yamuna, where the evening aarti is a beautiful sight.

Vrindavan: the land of Krishna's leelas

Vrindavan, a short way from Mathura, is where the child Krishna played his enchanting leelas among the gopis and the cows and it is today the most temple-rich town of Braj, with thousands of shrines old and new. The essentials of Vrindavan:

• The beloved heart. Banke Bihari, the most beloved temple of Vrindavan, where the darshan of the Lord is given in brief, tender glimpses.

• The marble marvel. Prem Mandir, the great white marble temple, luminous at night with its light and fountain show.

• Calm and kirtan. The ISKCON Krishna-Balaram temple, known for its early morning aarti, kirtan and calm; and Keshi Ghat on the Yamuna for the evening aarti.

Barsana: the town of Radha

Barsana, about 45 km from Vrindavan and set among low hills, is the beloved town of Radha, daughter of Vrishabhanu, whose divine love for Krishna is the very soul of Braj. It is quieter and more rural than Mathura and Vrindavan and deeply dear to devotees of Radha Rani. The essentials of Barsana:

• Radha's temple on the hill. The Shri Radha Rani temple, also called the Ladli Ji temple, crowns a hill above the town, reached by a climb of steps, with lovely views over Braj.

• Radha's mother and Krishna's love. Kirti Mandir, dedicated to Radha's mother Kirti and Maan Mandir, linked to the leela of Radha's loving pique, are cherished spots on the Barsana hills.

• The famous Holi. Barsana is renowned for its Lathmar Holi, a joyous, colourful festival in the days before the main Holi, drawing pilgrims from across the land.

How the three towns connect: distances

The three towns lie close within Braj; the approximate distances between them:

How to visit all three together

Because they lie close within Braj, all three towns can be woven into one pilgrimage; the usual ways:

• Mathura and Vrindavan in a day. The close pair is easily seen in a single busy day or better across two relaxed days, with the birthplace and the great Vrindavan temples.

• Add Barsana on a wider Braj trip. Barsana, with Nandgaon, is best added as its own half-day or day, often together with Govardhan on the western side of Braj.

• The full circuit over more days. To see Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Govardhan and Gokul without rushing, allow a longer Braj yatra of several days.

Best time to visit and the great festivals

Braj is beautiful all year, but three great festivals bring these towns most alive:

October to March is the pleasantest season for travel and darshan. The festivals are glorious but very crowded, so book far ahead and expect large gatherings; for a calmer visit, choose an ordinary week in the cool season.

Tips and how to plan your visit

• See Mathura and Vrindavan together, then add Barsana with Nandgaon on the western side of Braj.

• Plan darshan around the midday temple closing, morning and evening, at Vrindavan and Barsana alike.

• Barsana's Radha Rani temple involves a climb of steps up the hill, so wear easy footwear and allow time.

• October to March is the best season; the festivals are grand but very crowded, so book ahead.

• Dress modestly and remove leather before temple hills; carry water for the Barsana climb.

• A car with a guide makes the Barsana and Nandgaon leg far easier than public transport.
