Sonipat to Vrindavan distance: an overview
From Sonipat, the Haryana city north of Delhi, the town of Krishna at Vrindavan lies about 201 to 217 km to the south-east, depending on the route, roughly three and a half to five hours by road. The quick way, about three and a half hours, is by the Yamuna Expressway or the Western Peripheral Expressway joined to NH 44, both of which skirt Delhi; the shorter NH 44, at about 201 km, is much slower on ordinary roads. Sonipat is well placed for this, for Kundli, the northern head of the Western Peripheral Expressway, lies in its district, so the fast road is right at hand. Being a short, quick haul, it makes an easy day trip to Krishna's land. As Sonipat is on the main railway line, the train is also an option. This guide gives the routes both ways; and if you would like the drive, the darshan and the e-rickshaw arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour with Experience My India can plan your day.
From the ground (Gurudutt): For my guests from Sonipat, you have the good fortune that the Western Peripheral Expressway begins right at Kundli, near you, so you jump straight onto the fast road and slip past Delhi. Take that or the Yamuna Expressway, both about three and a half hours; do not take the plain NH 44, which is shorter but much slower. Come in the morning, do the Mathura and Vrindavan temples and you are home by evening. Radhe Radhe.
Sonipat to Vrindavan: the routes
The routes from Sonipat to Vrindavan, with approximate distance and time:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via the Western Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 (fastest) | About 217 km | About 3 hr 41 min |
Via the Yamuna Expressway | About 211 km | About 3 hr 43 min |
Via NH 44 (shortest) | About 201 km | About 4 hr 54 min |
The Western Peripheral Expressway with NH 44 and the Yamuna Expressway, are the two fast routes, both about 3 hr 41 to 3 hr 43 min, using the expressways to skirt Delhi; the NH 44, though the shortest at about 201 km, is much slower at about 4 hr 54 min on ordinary roads through the city. So the longer expressway routes are far the quicker choice. Times are approximate and depend on traffic; please check live maps before you set off.
Vrindavan to Sonipat: the return
The return, Vrindavan to Sonipat, is much the same. The options:
Route | Distance | Time (approx) |
Via the Yamuna Expressway (fastest) | About 210 km | About 3 hr 41 min |
Via NH 44 and the Western Peripheral Expressway | About 215 km | About 3 hr 52 min |
Via NH 44 (shortest) | About 204 km | About 4 hr 7 min |
The Yamuna Expressway route is the fastest for the return, at about 3 hr 41 min; the NH 44 with the Western Peripheral Expressway is a close second and the plain NH 44, though shortest, slower. As on the way out, the expressway routes are the quicker choice. Treat these as guide figures and check live traffic before you leave.
The routes: two expressways from Kundli
The key to the Sonipat to Braj journey is choosing one of the two fast expressways over the shorter direct road:
Kundli, the head of the KMP. Kundli, in Sonipat district, is the northern head of the Western Peripheral Expressway, the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal or KMP, which rings Delhi to the west and south; so a Sonipat traveller can join the fast expressway right at the start and skirt the capital towards Braj.
Or the Yamuna Expressway. Being north of Delhi, Sonipat can also reach the Yamuna Expressway, the fast road that runs south-east to Braj; both this and the Western Peripheral route are about three and a half hours, so either works well.
The direct road (shorter but slower). The NH 44 is the shortest at about 201 km, but runs on ordinary roads and through Delhi, so it is much slower at about 4 hr 54 min; the expressway routes, though a little longer, are far quicker and easier.
Where the road reaches the Braj end, our agra to vrindavan distance guide covers the approach to Mathura and Vrindavan.
Best ways to travel: road and rail
For this short, quick haul, Sonipat gives you good choices:
By car (best). About three and a half hours by the Yamuna or Western Peripheral Expressway, doable easily in a day, with the freedom to see Vrindavan and Mathura together, only about 14 km apart; a comfortable day trip. Fares vary, so ask us for a live quote.
By train. Sonipat is on the main railway line and trains connect it towards Mathura Junction, the station for both Mathura and Vrindavan; a restful option, though you may need to check connections, from where an auto or e-rickshaw takes you on. Check current trains on IRCTC.
By bus. Buses run from Sonipat towards Delhi and Mathura; the budget option, though slower and less direct than a car.

What to see in Braj, best time and tips
When you reach Braj, the great sights await:
In Vrindavan and Mathura. See the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show and the ISKCON temple in Vrindavan; and the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the Dwarkadhish temple and the Yamuna ghats in Mathura, only about 14 km apart.
Best time. October to March is the most pleasant season for the drive and the darshan, with cool, comfortable weather; start early so you reach the temples before the midday closing.
Tips. Take the Yamuna or Western Peripheral Expressway for the quickest drive, not the plain NH 44; in the old towns, cars are kept out of the lanes, so park at the edge and take an e-rickshaw for the temples.
See the banke bihari temple, prem mandir vrindavan and iskcon temple vrindavan in Vrindavan and the krishna janmabhoomi, dwarkadhish temple and braj yamuna ghats and leela sites in Mathura.
