Mathura & Vrindavan Places to See: The Best Temples and Sites

By Gurudutt, Experience My India·21 August 2026

Mathura and Vrindavan Places to See

Quick Answer

In Mathura, the places to see are led by the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace of Krishna, the Dwarkadhish temple, and Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna, with the Kans Qila, the Gita or Birla Mandir and the guardian shrines close by. In Vrindavan, the essentials are Banke Bihari, the beloved heart of the town, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show, the ISKCON Krishna-Balaram temple, and Keshi Ghat, along with the old Goswami temples and the grove of Nidhivan. Beyond the two towns lie Gokul, Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon, the wider Braj of Krishna's leelas. This guide sets out the best places to see in each, what they are known for and how to see them well, whether in a day, two days or more.

Quick Enquiry

Mathura and Vrindavan: an overview

Mathura and Vrindavan, only about a dozen kilometres apart on the banks of the Yamuna, are the twin hearts of Braj, the land of Krishna. Mathura is the city of his birth, older and busier, with its great birthplace temple, its riverside ghats and its ancient shrines; Vrindavan is the town of his childhood leelas, a place of a thousand temples, narrow devotional lanes and evenings of lamplight and song. Between and around them lie Gokul, Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon, each with its own beloved places. This guide gathers the best places to see across both towns and the nearby Braj, what each is known for and how to plan them; and if you would rather have it all arranged, a mathura vrindavan tour package with Experience My India puts a Braj-born guide and a comfortable vehicle at your service.

From the ground (Gurudutt): People often ask me whether to see Mathura or Vrindavan; my answer is always both, for they are two halves of one story, the birth and the childhood of Krishna. If you have only a day, take the heart of each; if you have two, give one to each town and breathe. And do not rush past the smaller shrines and ghats, for the sweetest moments of Braj often come in its quiet corners. Radhe Radhe. History lovers seek out the kans qila and the birla mandir with its Gita pillars, while pilgrims add the bhuteshwar mahadev, the guardian Shiva, the ancient keshav dev temple mathura, the sacred potra kund and the mathura guardian mahadevs and devis who watch over the city. We hold these as the cherished tradition of Braj, with reverence.

We hold these as the cherished tradition of Braj, with reverence.

We hold all these as the cherished tradition of Braj, with reverence.

How many days do you need and how to see them all

How much you can see depends on your days, and, above all, on planning around the temples' hours, which close for a few hours in the middle of the day:

  • One day. The heart of both towns if you start early: Mathura's Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish in the morning and Vrindavan's Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir and Keshi Ghat in the evening, with travel in the midday gap.

  • Two days. The comfortable choice: a full day in each town or one for the towns and one for Gokul or Govardhan, at an unhurried pace.

  • Three days or more. Add the wider Braj of Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon and time to linger in the bhajan and the ghats.

Our mathura vrindavan tour itinerary sets out ready-made day-by-day plans and the mathura vrindavan temple timings guide keeps the current darshan windows, since the main temples close for about three to four hours at midday; confirm the timings before you go.

Best time to visit

When

What to expect

October to March

The best weather, cool and pleasant for the temples and ghats

Janmashtami (Aug or Sep)

Krishna's birth, the greatest festival, glorious but very crowded

Holi (March)

The world-famous Braj Holi at Barsana, Nandgaon and Vrindavan

Kartik (Oct or Nov)

The holy month of lamps, parikramas and deep devotion

April to June

Very hot; start early and rest through the midday

Getting around and honest tips

  • The old-town lanes of both Mathura and Vrindavan are narrow and best walked; wear easy shoes.

  • E-rickshaws and autos are the everyday way between sites; agree the fare first.

  • A car with driver is most comfortable for families and for adding Gokul, Govardhan or Barsana.

  • Dress modestly at all temples: shoulders and knees covered is the safe standard.

  • Darshan is free and rituals are never compulsory; decline touts and pandas politely and walk on.

  • Many temples do not allow phones or cameras inside; be ready to leave shoes and belongings outside.

  • Start at dawn to beat the crowds and the heat and plan around the midday temple closing.

Our how to commute in vrindavan guide covers getting around both towns and the wider Braj.

If you would rather see the best of both towns without the planning, we arrange guided tours that take in all the great places of Mathura and Vrindavan, built around the temple hours, with pick-up from Mathura, Delhi or Agra, a comfortable vehicle and a knowledgeable Braj-born guide. A shared day tour starts from around ₹1,499 per person, with darshan free at the temples; our mathura vrindavan tour covers both towns over two days, our vrindavan tour package Vrindavan in a day, the braj 84 kos yatra the whole Braj circuit and the agra mathura vrindavan tour package adds Agra and the Taj Mahal. "We booked the Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package with Experience My India because we had only one day. The team started us early at Banke Bihari Temple, which was a great decision because the morning darshan was calmer. We then covered ISKCON and travelled to Mathura for Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish Temple. The afternoon temple closure was used for lunch instead of wasting time, and we finished around Vrindavan with Prem Mandir in the evening. The schedule was full, but the route made sense and we saw the main highlights of both towns."

"Our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package was perfect for our family. We spent the first day in Vrindavan, visiting Banke Bihari, ISKCON, Prem Mandir and Nidhivan, then kept the second day for Mathura and Gokul. In Mathura, we visited Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish Temple and Vishram Ghat, followed by Nand Bhavan and Raman Reti in Gokul. The guide planned the visits around the midday temple closure, so we had time for lunch and rest. We never felt like we were rushing from one darshan to another."

"We chose the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour Package because we wanted a proper Braj pilgrimage rather than only visiting the famous temples. Day one was dedicated to Vrindavan, starting with Banke Bihari, ISKCON and the old Goswami temples, then Prem Mandir and the evening Yamuna aarti. Day two covered Mathura and Gokul, including Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish, Vishram Ghat, Nand Bhavan and Raman Reti. The third day took us towards Govardhan and Barsana. Keeping Vrindavan as our base and travelling by private car made the whole three-day plan comfortable."
