Mathura and Vrindavan: the land of Krishna

The pilgrimage begins in Braj, the land of Krishna. Mathura is his birthplace, with the sacred krishna janmabhoomi, the grand dwarkadhish temple and the braj yamuna ghats and leela sites where the evening Yamuna aarti is held. A short hop away, Vrindavan, the town of his childhood, holds the beloved banke bihari temple, the marble prem mandir vrindavan, the serene iskcon temple vrindavan and the mysterious grove of Nidhivan. Two unhurried days here open the pilgrimage in sweetness before the longer road east.

Ayodhya: the city of Rama

About 500 km east of Braj, on the banks of the Saryu, lies Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama and one of the seven holy cities. It is a place of deep devotion and its sites are the heart of a Ram pilgrimage:

• The Ram Mandir. The grand new temple at Ram Janmabhoomi, consecrated in early 2024 and built in the traditional Nagara style, enshrining Ram Lalla, the child form of Rama; now the great draw of Ayodhya, drawing pilgrims from across the country. Darshan arrangements are managed and evolving, so check the current guidance before you travel.

• Hanumangarhi. The famed hilltop temple of Hanuman, Rama's greatest devotee, reached by a climb of steps and dear to every pilgrim; by custom, many visit Hanuman Ji first.

• Kanak Bhavan and the Saryu ghats. The beautiful Kanak Bhavan, said to have been Sita's palace and the ghats of the Saryu, above all Ram ki Paidi, where the evening aarti and the lamps on the river are lovely, complete the darshan of Ayodhya.

Kashi (Varanasi): the city of Shiva

About 200 km beyond Ayodhya stands Kashi or Varanasi, the eternal city of Lord Shiva on the Ganga, among the oldest living cities on earth and the holiest of the Moksha-puri. Its darshan is unlike any other:

• Kashi Vishwanath. The great temple of Lord Shiva as Vishwanath, the Lord of the Universe, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, at the heart of the old city; the temple now sits within a spacious corridor opened in recent years that connects it to the Ganga, easing the pilgrim's approach.

• The ghats and the Ganga aarti. The long sweep of ghats along the Ganga, above all Dashashwamedh, where the grand evening Ganga aarti of lamps and chanting is one of the great sights of India; a dawn boat ride past the ghats is equally unforgettable.

• Sarnath. A short way from the city, Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, adds a serene half-day of a different faith's great story to the pilgrimage.

How the four connect: the route

The circuit runs from west to east across the holy heartland; the approximate distances:

The long eastern legs are best done by train or with a driver over a comfortable schedule.

How many days do you need

Because of the distances, this is a multi-day pilgrimage; a sensible shape:

• About six days. The comfortable, popular length: two days for Mathura and Vrindavan, a day or two for Ayodhya and two days for Kashi, with the travel between them, so nothing is rushed.

• A shorter version. If time is tight, the circuit can be trimmed to four or five days, but the eastern legs are long, so a fuller schedule is far more restful and rewarding.

• A longer, deeper trip. With more days you can add the wider Braj, of Govardhan and Barsana and give Kashi an extra day for Sarnath and the ghats at dawn.

How to travel the circuit

The distances shape the choices; the main ways:

• By car with a driver (most flexible). A private vehicle across the whole circuit gives the most comfort and freedom, letting you set your own pace and reach each temple directly; the eastern legs are long but the roads are good.

• By train (restful for the long legs). Trains connect Mathura, Ayodhya and Varanasi and for the long eastern stretches the train is restful; a common plan mixes a car in Braj with trains for the longer hops.

• By a guided tour (simplest). A planned pilgrimage takes the logistics off your hands, arranging the vehicle, the stays, the darshan and the timings across all four cities, which many pilgrims prefer for a trip of this length.

Best time to visit

• October to March is the most pleasant season across all four cities, with cool, comfortable weather for temples and ghats alike.

• The Ganga aarti at Varanasi and the Saryu aarti at Ayodhya are beautiful year-round, but loveliest in the cooler months.

• Major festivals, Janmashtami and Radhashtami in Braj, Ram Navami and Diwali in Ayodhya and Mahashivratri and Dev Deepawali in Kashi, are magnificent but very crowded; plan and book far ahead.

• Avoid peak summer, when the eastern plains are very hot and the monsoon, when travel slows.

• Start each day early to reach the temples before midday closings and to make the most of the long travel legs.

Tips for the pilgrimage

• Plan for the distances: give the eastern legs their time and do not try to rush all four cities into too few days.

• Carry ID proof and check the current darshan arrangements for the Ram Mandir and Kashi Vishwanath, which are managed and can change.

• Wear comfortable footwear for the temple steps, the Hanumangarhi climb and the ghats and carry water in the warmer months.

• In the old lanes of every city, keep an e-rickshaw and a short walk in mind, as vehicles cannot always reach the temples.

• Keep your belongings secure in the crowds and at the ghats and follow each temple's customs on photography and offerings.
